I guess they're supposed to add an eerie, mysterious and ominous look, but to me it just seems that somebody dropped bucketfuls of cotton candy. Wind blowing in your ears... trees, signs and lanterns wildly shaking... and the blobs just stay there, unimpressed.
NOTE This is not about distant, ambient or weather fog, it only deals with those unlikely banks -- the static ones placed as references in the worldspace.
