About this mod

Specialists, who have a lot of skill in a magic school but few spells, get a bonus to their spell magnitude and duration.

What it does

Grants a 25% bonus to spell magnitude and duration if:
  • You have 50 or higher skill in the spell school for the spell you're casting AND
  • you have 5 or fewer known spells in the school for the spell you're casting

The idea here is that specialists in a school should be better at the few spells they know than generalists in that school are. Perhaps you're a spell-sword who wants magic armor but paralyzing your enemies just isn't your thing (so dishonorable), or a healer who doesn't want anything to do with undead, or a sneaky hunter who has no interest in mind control. Shouldn't you be better at the part of the magic that school you focus on?

The Forget Spell mod pairs very nicely with this, allowing you to replace spells with upgraded versions as your knowledge in the school progresses.

How it works

The active part of this mod is a group of hidden perks, which apply the bonus when you cast a qualifying spell and use perk entry point conditions to decide when a spell is qualifying. It's extremely light weight, and won't slow down your gameplay at all.

Unfortunately, Skyrim doesn't have a perk condition that checks how many spells a character knows, much less how many spells a characters knows from a given school of magic, nor does it tell mods when a spell is added to or removed from a character, so this mod has another part: a background process that occasionally counts how many spells the character knows in each school.

You won't notice that happening, it won't slow your game down, but it means there can be a delay between when you learn or forget spells and when the perk is applied or removed. You can sleep to force an immediate recount of your spells.
