About this mod

A step beyond Smooth Leveling, this mod autocalculates stats AND player level according to your skills (and other achievements). Basically, no level up menus ever.

Skyrim's leveling system attempts to walk a line between classic RPG mechanics -- with the H/M/S selection process -- and natural gameplay, where you level skills up through normal use. I don't think this system is particularly inspired, and, like many mod authors before me, I'm releasing my own solution.

Now, solutions to this issue have come in two rough forms.

The first is to introduce more player attributes or an experience system, to reward better character planning and to bring forward inspiration from the Elder Scrolls' classic RPG roots. There are several excellent solutions to this, from zax' Experience mod to DrPharmDawg's AVA. I love these mods, but I think they start to get a little too far from Skyrim's biggest strength: natural exploration and gameplay.

The second solution was pioneered by Lofgren, and it leans more heavily into these core strengths of Skyrim. In Lofgren's Smooth Attribute Scaling, your skill levels determine everything. Your character level now means largely nothing, and your health, Magicka, stamina, and carry weight are direct functions of your various skill levels.

So, if I like Smooth Attribute Scaling so much, why even make this mod? There answer is threefold:

  • SAS still has normal level-ups. Every so often, you get a notification about leveling up, you go into your stats menu, and you select to improve H/M/S. Of course, the improvement is immediately removed, but the process is exactly as before.
  • SAS doesn't offer customization of things like perks/level. I personally run with no perks per level, because I use a fancy schmancy modlist. I want to support that.
  • SAS isn't compatible with one of my other favorite mods, Realistic Capacity. I wanted a natural combination of the two, that would support the excellent carry weight modifications of the latter but with a slight skill-based bonus from SAS.

So, these are the three major things Advancement does differently. No level up menus, ever. Customizable perks per level and levels between perk payouts. Total compatibility with Realistic Capacity.

We also have some neat technical bonuses. For one, I've added support for books and skill books to increase your Magicka when first read, and for new locations to increase your Stamina when first discovered. Secondly, by suggestion from Hazarduss, Advancement has a "failsafe" 6 second timer to increase your stats/level if it misses it otherwise.

Also, everything is adjustable in the MCM.

Installation and Compatibility

Just install this in MO2. Y'all should be using MO2 at this point. You probably don't need a new character. I also recommend using Skyrim Uncapper -- I've attached a preset INI designed for Advancement. Note: If the MCM and an Uncapper INI disagree on anything, the MCM wins.

In terms of compatibility, this will have trouble with any mod that tries to force-increase your skills at any point. I've guaranteed compatibility with Honed Metal, but there may be issues with other such mods. Also, if you have mods that change starting skills, the script will have to be patched for that.

This will work in VR. There's a slight hiccup, in that ConsoleUtilVR is experiencing some issues right now -- this means that you'll still have to go into the perks menu to level up, but you won't choose H/M/S.

Permissions and Credits

I'd like to thank Lofgren for the excellent work making SAS, and IsharaMeradin for the original SE port of SAS. I'd also like to thank the Librum beta testing team for their hard work rooting out bugs, and particularly Hazarduss for his scripting help and Braven and Namworth for taking the screenshots we use here.

Please feel free to make patches/translations/whatever for this mod -- if you want to upload it elsewhere, I ask that you please make sure to keep it up-to-date, and please to let me know.
