Great mod, but runs into a problem mid-late game: none of the custom pickaxes can mine Stalhrim, making the mod ultimately pointless as soon as you get an Ancient Nordic Pickaxe.
At the very least Stalhrim should be able to mine Stalhrim, and preferably anything craftable with Smithing 75 or higher should also be able to (e.g. Glass and Ebony, as well as any and all materials above that like Dragonbone and Daedric).
Before then though it's nice to have a Steel Pickaxe that matches the Steel Armor and Steel Plate Armor near perfectly. As I almost never use the actual pickaxe anims and just wail on the ore deposits with a pickaxe and a dagger, the anims really don't matter much to me, but good on you for figuring out a workaround that allows the correct visual to play :)
Compatibility: This mod will conflict with other mods that alter the vanilla pickaxes, the MineOreScript or the MineOreFurnitureScript. Don't ESLify the esp as the scripts use GetFormFromFile and ESL could change formID's making the mod no longer function.
We are aware of some funky things about the equipping and unequipping of weapons and such. We are avidly fine tuning this :) Edit: These funky things seem to be fixed.
Hey hey, how we did it was to reduce the size of the vanilla pickaxe anime object, then when you start mining it equips a pickaxe armor based on the pickaxe you have equipped, or a pickaxe in your inventory if you don't have one equipped. Then unequips the pickaxe armor after you're done mining.
Neat. I'm no expert but I've noticed the majority of pickaxe mods only work as replacements, as making new pickaxes would always use the wrong model during animation. Hope this mod existing helps encourage more people to do it.
The script source files aren't available, so I'm wondering whether the equipping script runs on anybody or only the player character? I'd like to be able to patch in the ArteFakes model of Rocksplinter to have that Odfel guy in Shor's Stone look the part of a miner who owns a special pick.
The script is on the ore vein itself. This works with NPCs as well. We have NOT given an NPC one of these custom axes yet so we are not aware if it functions with them at this time.

Is it possible to add an patch for Unlimited Woodworks and Mining?
Oh, and maybe a patch for ElSopas Luxurious Unique Pickaxes?
They still switch to vanilla when mining.
