About this mod

This mod makes unique NPCs protected so they can only be killed by the player.

Also available for XBox One.

This mod makes all unique (named) NPCs protected except:
  • NPCs that need to be able to get killed not directly by the player during game events
  • NPCs that are always flagged as essential and may not be killed
  • creatures (vampires and werewolves will be protected)
  • children (cannot be killed)
  • already protected NPCs
  • respawning NPCs
  • NPCs tied to a quest or location that normally can't be killed by other NPCs

Please see the attached article for a complete list of all protected and non-protected unique NPCs.  Protected NPCs can only be killed directly by the player.  As a limitation of the engine this excludes setting them on fire with oil slicks or fall damage by pushing them.

This mod must be installed before starting a new game.

The .esp file has been flagged as an ESL mod.  ESL mods do not count towards the 255 mod limit.

Even though the files used have been created specifically for this mod, functionality it is similar to both NPCs Protected Redux and Protect your People.  The majority of NPCs have been flagged protected through their actor records (updated with the latest USSEP, making it a requirement), while a few essential NPCs that change to non-essential during quests have been protected by creating reference aliases with a protected flag.  An already existing cleanup script has been added to NPCs that were made protected with alias to prevent their dead bodies from persisting in the world.

It is recommended to place this mod before any others that change NPC actor records in the load order.  Actor records overwritten by other mods might change the protected flag depending on the mod.

I wish to express my thanks to blattgeist (NPCs Protected Redux) and iMACobra (Protect your People - PyP - Better NPC Protection SE) for the permissions to use their ideas.
