Carolingian sword (also Viking sword) with type Z hilt according to Petersen and Kirpichnikov's typology. The original sword was found in Sweden, dated to the second half of the 10th - early 11th centuries.
Type Z is one of the most concise descriptions. There are three main theses:
All blades are double-edged, there are no single-edged ones among them - at least in the material that Petersen personally studied about a hundred years ago.
The crosshairs of Z-type swords are curved, relatively large, narrowed in longitudinal section.
The tops of these swords are three-part. Also, swords with a five-part pommel are now referred to the same type - provided that one more important condition is met. The condition is simple - the central part of the tops should be higher than the neighboring ones.
Swords of this type were widely used in the second half of the 10th - early 11th centuries. This type is one of the late types of the Viking Age. It coexisted with both Type X and Type Y swords at the same time.
Type Z was especially common in the north and east of Europe, primarily in Sweden, eastern Norway, the Baltic countries, Poland, Finland and the territory of modern Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. Many known finds of original swords of this type have been found in Finland and Russia. However, one specimen was found in the West, in the Thames (England). This type probably replaces type R and type S, with the guard acquiring a characteristic bend. Swords of this type were also common throughout the German territory of Europe. In Norway, swords of this type are especially characteristic of the eastern part of the country.
