I had a few mods that altered Veezara's appearance that made him look very distinct from all my other Argonian followers. Was kinda shocked when I saw him in Dawnstar, he was his old Vanilla self. (Also lost the Shadowscale armor I put on him sadly)

This is a looooong time ago, but I'm assuming they used the Brutish Argonian male mod. Gives them more draconic characteristics. Along with wearable crowns you can basically make him a D&D dragonborn
The only good thing about Gabrielle was her killing a unicorn with a crochet needle line. The only time when shes important in the quest is when you assassinate Maro's son. She wasn't the one fighting with you as you fled the wedding, she didn't take a sword for anybody. Veezara is totally more preferable to survive.
Gabriella is cool. Veezara is way cooler though. The last Shadowscale, the best assassins the world has ever seen. And he is a goddamn lizard-man! That's way more badass than a generic Dunmer with a shitty name.
I never tested after completing the storyline. But you can just place him using console command, first find his ID by using the ''help veezara 4'' he is the ''VeezaraAlive'' once you have his ID, type ''player.placeatme X'' where X is the ID you previously found.
So I have to have this mod disabled until I complete the DB questline, as he isn't in the DS sanctuary if you haven't started any DB quests. He actually spawns inside Mara's temple and will CONSTANTLY try to follow me through the temple and talk to me even if I didn't initiate talking to him. I wanted to add this mod to my playthrough so I could have him as a useful follower, but with that bug I cannot have it enabled on a brand new pt/one I haven't done the DB quests yet
