About this mod

This mod makes you able to marry people right from the beginning of the game, by removing all the initial requirements (talking to Maramal, buying an amulet from him, wearing the amulet), and also makes you able to propose almost every NPC, including mod's NPC. Optional file allows you to skip the entire wedding event. French and English available.

Free marriage.

First of all, before going into the description, I want to make an important disclaimer:

Free marriage is divided in two parts:
--> The first part is the ESP/ESL file itself.
--> The second part is the scripts.

As of the update 1.2, the format of the files has been upgraded to ESP flagged as ESL.
Read the details about the update 1.2 below for more details.

These two parts complement each other, in a way I will detail in the description below, but what you have to know is, while they complement each other, they also can work independantly from each other, meaning you can absolutely use only one of them if you want, no matter which one.

I will describe individually each part of the mod below, so you can know exactly what you are installing.

I take NO REQUESTS, NO SUGGESTIONS.

For better readability, each section of the description will be put under Spoiler tags you can collapse as you wish.

Due to the lenght of the description, there won't be a French description.

Update 1.2 is now live.

- The update 1.2 brings a major update to the files themselves: as I received numerous comments from people telling me that the ESL files didn't work for them, while the ESP were; I have now turned the ESP files into ESP flagged as ESL files.

What does it mean? It means you will have an ESP file, which will have all the features and functionalities of an ESP file, AND, as it is flagged as ESL, it also means this file won't be counted towards the 255 plugin limit of regular ESP.

If you were using the ESP version, you can safely upgrade to the ESP flagged as ESL version, the only difference you will have it that the mod won't take anymore room in your plugin limit, in short, you gain one slot for others mods.

If you were using the ESL version and it worked for you, then you don't need to upgrade to said version as you already have everything working as intended.

Aside of this change in the file itself, the update 1.2 doesn't bring any other change in the mod itself.

Update 1.1 is now live.

- The update 1.1 fixes an issue that prevented marriage with some NPCs due to the conversation cutting short, thus, disallowing the player from following through.
Now, the conversation will proceed as intended.

However, fixing this issue has brought another minor issue, in that some NPCs, although their answer will play properly and will allow the player to proceed with the marriage, won't use their audio files, in short, they will be muted, but ONLY for this sentence (Their answer to the player's marriage proposal), the rest of their dialogues, including the dialogues after being married, will be voiced as before.
Despite my efforts, I couldn't bring back the audio without removing the fix itself, so I decided that having ONE sentence being muted for SOME NPCS was worth fixing a major issue.

Also, this update DOESN'T allow you to marry with NPCs who do not have the proper voice used for marriage, notably, old people or some important quest NPCs like Delphine or Karliah.

This is something I CAN change, as the solution is roughly the same as the previous fix, but it requires a lot of work and testing, much more than what I am currently willing to do, on top of being pretty sure marrying quest NPCs could cause major issues with their quests and behavior, and I don't want to be spammed with messages asking me for support.

I do not rule out to do it in the future, but for now, I am not willing to commit to it, so don't ask.

Note: NO changes have been made to the scripts.

So, what is Free marriage, and what is its purpose?
Spoiler:
Show

If you read the summary, you already have an idea, but first, let me quickly explain you the intent behind this mod:

I always hated the fact you were forced to go to Riften, talk to Maramal, buy an amulet of Mara from him, then, wear the amulet to be able to propose people, then, were again forced to go to Riften to marry in what seems to be the only temple in ALL Skyrim to celebrate weddings.
This is ridiculous, this is stupid, this is a tedious and utterly uneeded process, and it breaks my immersion.

If I want to marry someone, why in the world should I be forced to do all these things? Why couldn't I propose my significant other to marry me, she says yes, and that's it, we're married, and birds sing our love for the years to come?
We're in Skyrim, where couples happen simply, not in some sort of elaborate society where everything is utterly codified, up to the way you are supposed to wipe your butt.

So, what did I do? This:

Free marriage gets rid of all these stupid requirements and makes you ask your lover to marry you right now, from the beginning of the game, precisely, what it means is the following steps are no longer required to propose someone:

--> Go to Riften and talk to Maramal about marriage.
--> Buy an amulet of Mara from him.
--> Wear the amulet of Mara you just bought.

Now, an example, so you can better figure what it means:

Let's say you just start the game, you go to Whiterun after leaving Helgen, and you meet with Ysolda, and do a quest for her.

Now, in the base game, after doing this, Ysolda becomes marriageable, right?

With my mod, this doesn't change, Ysolda still becomes marriageable after doing her quest, nothing changes.

Now, in the base game, if you wish to marry Ysolda, you will have to go through tedious steps which are:
--> Travel to Riften to talk to Maramal.
--> Buy an amulet from him.
--> Return to Whiterun, equip the amulet of Mara you just bought, and then, talk to Ysolda, and finally, propose her.

With my mod, it's just: you do the quest for Ysolda, Ysolda becomes marriageable, you talk to her, you propose her right here right now.

But, this is not the only change I've made.
There is another one, much more significant, probably a game changer regarding marriage:

Now, on top of not needing anymore to go through these annoying steps, you can also ask pretty much anyone to marry you, this includes Jarls, already married people, even nameless town guards, and most likely bandits and various humanoids you can encounter in the wild; and it also includes NPC's added by others mods.

ALL OF THIS, WITHOUT THE NEED OF ANY MODIFICATION MADE TO THESE NPC, ensuring a perfect compatibility with any and all followers and NPC mods you are using.

Note that this change is not an unintended consequence of the above removal of requirements to propose someone, this is another and deliberate modification, who do not change in any way, shape or form, the base interractions you could have with base marriageable NPC's.

Note also that you won't be able to marry EVERYONE, some NPC's, like Delphine and Karliah, cannot be married.

To tell you the truth, I CAN make them marriageable, and I did during my work on the mod, but I ultimately ruled against it, because these are heavily scripted NPC's, involved in many quests, and I am pretty sure marrying them would do major damage to their normal scripted behaviors, so yeah, I don't want to do that.

Also, of course and for very obvious reasons, kids cannot be married.

But, you'll still have roughly 99% of all NPC's of the game being potential spouses.

Also, while this mod allows you to marry most of mod's NPCs, if these NPCs, including followers, have a custom voice, unless this custom voice is specifically tailored for marriage dialogues, you won't be able to marry them, and even if you were, the chances are very high they still wouldn't act with you as their spouse.

Also, very important disclaimer:

THIS MOD DOESN'T MAKES POLYGAMY POSSIBLE.

This, and everything detailed above is part of the ESP/ESL file, I will give a quick Q/A at the end of the description.

Now, let's talk about the Scripts themselves.
Spoiler:
Show

I told you that I didn't like having to complete the aforementioned steps before being able to marry someone, right?

But there is something else that bothers me as much, and can be quite obnoxious very quickly: it's the actual wedding ceremony itself.

In the base game, this ceremony is already prone to bugs, with NPC's stucking, the priest not talking, and whatnot.

And when it works, it's slow, slooooooow !

And it's the same thing as previously: why in the world should have to do this? Can't I just ask my SO to marry me, she says yes, and that's it, we're married? Do we really need to go to a church to love each other and live together?

Did I really got through the pain of removing the steps to be able to propose someone just so I still have to travel to Riften and inflict myself with this wedding ceremony?

No, I don't think so.

So, what the script does, it is slightly modifies the base game script of the actual wedding ceremony, and NOTHING else, so the game automatically skips the entire ceremony, and jumps right to "tadaa ! You're married now, talk to your spouse and decide where you will live !"

To give you a better understanding, the wedding quest is actually separated in two quests; the one you see in your quest log, and a second one, invisible, who deals with the actual wedding ceremony.

After you proposed your lover, you get the objective to talk to Maramal to organize the wedding, and then, you get the new objective of assisting your own wedding.

This is where the main quest switches to the second, invisible quest, which handles the ceremony, but also, at the end of it, sends back a signal to the main quest to tell it to complete itself.
This second invisible quest is also the one who is actually responsible for the actual wedding in the sense that it is that quest who changes the relation you have with your now spouse (calling your my love, asking you where you will live, etc).

So, in short, what are the ESP/ESL and the scripts do?
Spoiler:
Show

The ESP/ESL files makes you able to propose almost anyone, without the need to go through the basic steps that are, I remind you:
-- Go to Riften and talk to Maramal.
-- Buy an amulet of Mara from Maramal.
-- Wearing the amulet of Mara when you want to marry.

That's all. Aside of that, once you proposed someone, the rest of the quest, which is talking to Maramal to organize your wedding, and everything that follows, will proceed exactly as it does in the base game without this mod installed.

The script, for it, essentially takes the relay of the ESP/ESL, by making the talking to maramal objective auto-complete itself, then, as the game switches to the second invisible quest, which is the actual wedding ceremony, this quest will also instantly auto-complete itself; leading you to be married instantly, whithout having to actually go through the process of traveling to Riften and assist the ceremony.

So, as you can see, both aspects of this mod are complementary, but they also can work independantly: the ESP/ESL file doesn't need the Scripts to do its part, and the Scripts don't need to be validated by the ESP/ESL to do theirs; which means you can:

--> Either use the ESP/ESL alone if you just want to get rid of the first steps of the wedding quest, but you want to keep the ceremony because you enjoy it.

--> Use the scripts if you want to keep the first steps of the wedding quest, but want to get rid of the actual ceremony so you get married instantly.

--> Or use both, and essentially be able to propose anyone right of the bat, and be instantly married.

Q/A and complementary information.

Q) If I use the scripts, will I receive the full benefits of marriage even if I didn't get the wedding ceremony?
A): Yes, you will receive your wedding ring, along with your spouse, and the next time you will talk to them, you will have the corresponding dialogue option (affectionate words, asking you were to live, etc).

Q) I use the script, and I proposed someone, but I didn't get instantly married, why?
A) Because probably due to engine inertia, the script doesn't update itself instantly, for that, you need to either: wait for 24 hours, or change cell (enter or exit a building is generally the easiest and quickest solution), and you're good.

Q) I installed the mod, but I didn't get instantly married, why?
A) Install the scripts. It is the scripts who make the marriage instantaneous.

Q) Then what does the mod?
A) Read the description.

Q) My spouse didn't gave me the keys to their house when I told them I wanted to live in their place.
A) For unknown reasons, some NPC's won't give you the key to their house, even when this key exists, to circumvent that, ask them to follow you, then, as you would do with any follower, take the key from their inventory.

Q) If I marry a Jarl, can I move to his castle?
A) Yes, and everything that is his will become yours, the Jarl will treat you with affection, etc like, any other spouse; however, others NPC's won't treat you any differently and will still treat you depending on their actual relation with you.

Q) Can NPC's I married, who weren't supposed to marry, be told to move to my house?
A) Yes, and they will live with you in your house.

Q) If I marry someone who is already married and has kids, will the family follow if I move to my house?
A) No, only your spouse will (congratulations, you literally stole the wife/husband of someone else and made them a deadbeat dad/mother).

Q) If I marry someone who is already married and has kids, can I move to their house?
A) Yes, and the former husband/wife/family unit will still be there, watching you as you cuck them in their own house, who is now yours.

Q) That's wrong !
A) I'm not the one who decided to marry someone who was already married; and when you think about, in a sense, I made polygamy possible, except you aren't the one benefiting from it.

Q) I installed the ESP/ESL file and I can't marry anyone right of the bat, you told us we could do that, why can't I do that?
A) Because you still need to build a relation with them before being able to ask them to marry you.

Q) Then you are a liar: you said we could marry anyone right from the start of the game !
A) You can, but it wouldn't make sense to ask people you just met to marry you, so build a relation with them, and then, ask them to marry you. So yes, you can marry anyone right from the start of the game, it's just people won't accept to marry to strangers.

Q) If I uninstall the mod, will NPC's I married who aren't supposed to be married in the base game stay my spouse?
A) Yes.

Q) Won't it cause issues?
A) No.

Q) Why is there a french version and an english version?
A) Because the changes made directly affect the language of the dialogues spoken by both you and the potential spouse, so you'll end up with french text in the middle of your perfectly rounded english text, and I know how much english speakers hate and are allergic to any other language; or you would have english text in the middle of your beautiful and elaborate french text, and everyone knows french people cannot speak a single word of english, this is untrue of course, but it's a stereotype we try to keep alive for the folklore.

Q) Some NPC's won't talk when asked to marry me, why?
A) Because these NPC's don't have audio files for this kind of situation, therefore, they won't speak, but the dialogue will still proceed.

Q) My mod follower/Random NPC from the base game doesn't marry me, why?
A) For more or less the same reason as above, except this time, they most likely use a custom voice who is not designed to have marriage options, thus, while you will still have the marriage proposition, the conversation will stop right there.
Like for Delphine and others, it would theorically be possible to made them marriageable anyway, but the issue will simply be postponed, as they still won't act as spouses.

Q) Can you do...?
A) No. I take no requests, at all.

Q) But I have a good idea and...
A) No. Requests. At all. Period.

Installing, uninstalling, and technical information.

How do I install the mod?

Since the mod is separated in two parts, each part will have to be installed separately; for each part, it's the same thing: drop the Data folder in your Skyrim SE folder, that's all.

If you use Vortex or whatever other software, that's the same thing, it will install it as any other mod, no issues.

You can install the ESP/ESL file safely at any moment.
It is of course totally incompatible with any and all mods who modify the same thing, but odds are there aren't any, so it should be good, and you can place the mod pretty much anywhere in the load order.

Some players have reported the ESL version wasn't working for them. I cannot provide any support for this as it comes from your own individual installation.
If you encounter CTD on load when the ESL file is activated, remove it and install the ESP file instead.

Note: as of the update 1.2, the ESP flagged as ESL version should resolve any and all issues.

For the scripts, you can safely install them in the middle of a playthrough, but, before doing that, and to avoid potential issues, you should take the following precautions:

-- Before installing the scripts, do a safe save on another emplacement, so if you encounter issues (which you shouldn't at all, but best be safe than sorry), you will be able to start back from this "clean" save.

-- If you have any save where the marriage quest is already ongoing (from the moment you already did your marriage proposal to the very end of the ceremony), FINISH these quests BEFORE installing the scripts.
Do NOT install the scripts in the middle of the marriage, from the moment you proposed your lover, to the moment where you are now married.

I will NOT offer support to players who ignored these warnings.

Scripts are unstable things, and even modifications such as mine, who are extremely slight, should be taken seriously, and that's the main reason, even before giving players the choice of skipping or not the ceremony, why I put the Scripts file in a separate, optional file, so you can know exactly what you are installing.

It is possible you get some scripts incompatibilities with others mods who modify these, in that case, I highly recommend you to NOT install my scripts, at least before checking exactly what the others scripts do, so to avoid bad surprises.
As an insurance policy, do a copy of the scripts before installing mine if you still want to do it.

For very obvious reasons, I won't modify my scripts so they get compatible with any other mod: the changes I've made are already the smallest possible, and each of them is absolutely essential.

How to uninstall the mod?

Delete the ESP/ESL file from your Data folder, that's all.

You can safely uninstall the ESP/ESL file at any moment during your playthrough, and there won't be any lingering effect; people you married will stay your spouse and everything will work just fine.

For the scripts, you will have to manually delete these two following files, located in the Scripts folder, itself inside the Data folder:
QF_RelationshipMarriageWeddin_0007404E
QF_RelationshipMarriageCourti_00074793

Then, relaunch the game and the original, clean scripts, will reinstall themselves properly.

Note: if the files do not automatically reinstall themselves, use the Steam tool to verify the integrity of the game files; at the end of the process, the tool should then repair the files by reinstalling them.

Do NOT delete these files in the middle of a marriage quest (You'll probably have a hard time doing this though, since the scripts will essentially skip most of the marriage quest anyway).

From this, and if you followed the instructions properly, you shouldn't encounter any issue

That's all.
