About this mod

An expansion and rebalance of the original Alchemist's Backpack by kelretu, resources used with permission. I've expanded it to four tiers, tweaked stats, and added crafting recipes.

Original mod: Alchemist's Backpack by kelretu

Changes:
  • No longer provides armor (original provided 23); classified as clothing instead of light armor
  • Weight changed from 6 units to 5
  • Crafting recipes added (see below)
  • ESP flagged as ESL
  • Four download options. The basic file adds a bottom rank backpack to the Alchemist's Shack; the No Shack version only adds the crafting recipes and game assets for maximum compatibility. Files marked LE have doubled buff magnitudes relative to the original files.
  • The basic file carries forward the Max Height Data changes from Update.esm, which the original mod did not.

This mod is for hardcore players who want balanced gear and an alternate use for the Enchanting skill. The values are intentionally low because I don't self enchant items due to the extremely abusable nature of the system.

From a roleplaying perspective, the initial version is a nonmagical pack designed & built for easy alchemy reagent storage & access. The higher tier packs are the same backpack improved in stages with progressively stronger enchantments to reduce the weight of items inside & help the user find exactly the ingredient they're looking for, enhancing the efficiency of their potions by improving their timing.

I present this as an alternative to the badly broken vanilla enchanting system. If folks show enough interest, I'll release recipes for other skill boost items using a similar prerequisite scheme if people want to make their own enchanted gear (using vanilla assets, probably) without worrying about magnitude formulae etc - robes, gloves, rings, et cetera. I could also change the skill prerequisites to check modified skill level instead of base if requested.

The base version should be compatible with anything that doesn't modify the alchemist's shack. The No Shack version should be compatible with literally anything that doesn't remove crafting prerequisites (leather, leather strips, filled soul gems, basic skills, and the Arcane Blacksmith perk), as it adds entirely new assets and doesn't touch any vanilla assets. The only dependency is Skyrim.esm (the core game master), though the base file will have a minor conflict if you don't load Update.esm (the official patch), since I carried forward the max height data from same. Both versions are fully compatible with the Unofficial Patch and with the New Perk Tree version of Smithing Perks Overhaul SE. I haven't tested the Modified Vanilla Tree option (it changes Arcane Blacksmith to Arcane Smith), but if I'm reading the file correctly the actual editor ID of the perk stays the same. Please let me know if it needs a patch.

Statistics, Recipes, & Descriptions:

There are now four tiers of pack: Lesser, Improved, Greater, and Supreme. None of them can be enchanted or disenchanted, and the enchantment value has been set to zero so the packs aren't worth a fortune.

The Lesser pack shows up at the tanning rack if you have at least 20 Smithing skill, 30 Alchemy skill, and at least 1 Leather in your inventory. It costs 1 iron ingot, 3 leather, and 3 leather strips. It fortifies alchemy by 5 and carry weight by 50. Value is 80. Unless you're using the No Shack version, one can be found on the ground at the base of the bed in the Alchemist's Shack. The in-game description is as follows: "A custom backpack designed for easy organization & storage of alchemical ingredients."

The Improved pack requires 1 lesser pack, 30 Enchanting skill, 40 Alchemy skill, and the Arcane Blacksmith perk. It costs 1 lesser pack and 1 filled common soul gem to construct. It fortifies alchemy by 8 and carry weight by 60. Value is 200. The in-game description is as follows: "A custom backpack designed for easy organization & storage of alchemical ingredients. This particular pack has been enchanted to slightly reduce the weight of the items inside & assist the user in finding the ingredients they're looking for."

The Greater pack requires 1 improved pack, 40 Enchanting skill, 50 Alchemy skill, and the Arcane Blacksmith perk. It costs 1 improved pack and 1 filled greater soul gem to construct. It fortifies alchemy by 12 and carry weight by 80. Value is 600. The in-game description is as follows: "A custom backpack designed for easy organization & storage of alchemical ingredients. This particular pack has been enchanted to moderately reduce the weight of the items inside & assist the user in finding the ingredients they're looking for."

The Supreme pack requires 1 greater pack, 50 Enchanting skill, 60 Alchemy skill, and the Arcane Blacksmith perk. It costs 1 greater pack and either 1 filled grand soul gem or 1 filled black soul gem to construct. It fortifies alchemy by 15 and carry weight by 100. Value is 1,200. The in-game description is as follows: "A custom backpack designed for easy organization & storage of alchemical ingredients. This particular pack has been enchanted to significantly reduce the weight of the items inside & assist the user in finding the ingredients they're looking for."

By request, there is also a Legendary Edition variant of each version in optional files. The above is unchanged save for the carry weight and alchemy fortification buffs, both of which are doubled  in all cases.

Afterword:

The current files are in beta because the backpack hovers with a visible gap between it and the player's back in 3rd person in many cases. If anyone would care to walk me through fixing the issue in NifSkope, I would be very grateful.

All I did was change the crafting recipes and stats and carry forward the max height change in the Alchemist's Shack cell from the official update. The original concept, graphical assets, placement in the shack, etc. were developed by kelretu and used with permission. For images and video of the pack in-game, please visit the original mod's page.

If anyone wants to write a patch to make this work with a particular perk overhaul, I welcome the assistance and will give credit where it's due. I can host patches here after inspecting them myself or link to them on the creator's page, depending on the preference of the modder who created the patch.

If anyone wants to create a new mod using the graphical assets in this one, you'll have to contact kelretu for permission.

This is my first published mod. Constructive criticism would be extremely welcome.
