About this mod

A re-imagining of the vanilla Alchemist's Shack into a simple but cozy and more functional player home.

My first mod release!

I've always liked the Alchemist's Shack. I love that it exists in the open worldspace of the Rift, and that there's a suggestion of a story behind it. Although there are good overhauls already, I wanted to make the place my own and decided to share the result. I did my best to keep a (relatively) simple, rustic vibe, while also making it more functional as a player home and taking advantage of some amazing resources out there.

Thank you Febrith Darkstar for the beautiful showcase! Version 1.0 featured in the video.

FEATURES:

  • All safe storage (no respawning containers), some named and some generic
  • Bed gives Well Rested bonus
  • A bedroll for one follower that can be placed and put away as needed
  • Animated, see-through glass windows
  • Each light can be toggled on and off at its source
  • Stove gives off warmth for Frostfall and similar mods
  • A cooking pot
  • Switch between alchemy and enchanting workbenches as needed
  • Single-object bookshelf that holds 40 books
  • Potion shelf that behaves like the vanilla bookshelves to both store and display your potions
  • An expanded, fenced garden with additional plants and Hearthfire plantable soil plots
  • A handful of respawning ingredient jars
  • Two chickens with nests and a coop
  • A teeny root cellar for additional food/ingredient storage and because I love ridiculously teeny spaces
  • An outdoor washtub
  • An outdoor toilet for all your immersion needs
  • A fully rewritten (and much longer) alchemist's journal and a few hand-placed narrative details, intended to give the former occupant a sense of having lived a life. I tried to remain vague with this person's past and eventual fate, both to preserve a sense of mystery and to allow players to make their own stories and connections
  • Includes the improved journal mesh and textures from Book Covers Skyrim - no patch needed
  • Optional add-on: an additional shack with four bunk-style beds for followers

ISSUES/LIMITATIONS:

  • The roof blocks rain, but not falling aspen leaves or wayward butterflies
  • I'm putting this under issues because I think I'm in the minority, but I actually like it when homes have some clutter that isn't nailed down. So if you tend to run around like a bull in a china shop, be aware that you may knock some stuff over. I heartily recommend SomethingObscure's Tidy Up and/or a positioner mod to place things as desired
  • I did my best to make the activators user-friendly, but it's a small space with lots of stuff you can click on. Sometimes it can be a bit tricky
  • Actors using the cooking pot will be a little bit off the ground. It was either that, or clip the pot into the stove
  • Not intended for use with a spouse or kids
  • No display racks, mannequins, Hearthfire ovens, smithing, tanning, workbench, staff enchanter or spider-whatsit. This home is intended for the dedicated alchemist (who may also dabble in enchanting). Mentha's Alchemist's Basement and Uzue's Alchemist's Basement - Player Home are compatible with this mod if you want more crafting stations, storage, plants, etc
  • NOTE: I have no idea what would happen if you use the activators to disable furniture an NPC is currently using. Probably bad things. Do so at your own risk.
  • No plans to release this for Original Skyrim since I don't currently have it. Sorry :(

COMPATIBILITY:

  • Obviously not compatible with other mods that change the Alchemist's Shack or its immediate exterior
  • Vanilla navmesh has been slightly shifted around newly placed objects, with Navcut boxes used where possible. If the navmesh changes get overwritten, nothing terrible will happen but followers may bump into stuff
  • Load this mod AFTER Landscape Fixes for Grass Mods
  • Wet and Cold, R.A.S.S. and potentially other mods that do similar things: you'll still get the drips/rain lens effect while inside the house. I don't think there's anything I can do about this, but if anyone knows a solution I'm all ears
  • I disabled nearby vanilla predator spawns, but if you use a mod that re-adds them (or adds more) such as SkyTEST, predators may still show up to kill your chickens :(
  • ***If you use Veydosebrom Regions (as seen in the screenshots), I HIGHLY recommend you also use meh321's No Grass In Objects! Otherwise, you'll have leaves throughout the inside of the shack

The following patches are available in Optional Files:

  • Cheesemod for EVERYONE - moves a cheese so it's on the counter and not the floor. Optional.
  • Complete Alchemy and Cooking Overhaul - moves a few objects to match the new layout. Optional.
  • Immersive Laundry - disables a laundry line that blocks the garden, you can use the console to do the same if you don't want to use the patch

Compatible (No Patch Needed):
  • Citizens of Tamriel - though certain dialogue options may result in a certain occupant not leaving the home
    Spoiler:
    Show
Make sure you have a healing potion in your inventory before starting this conversation, and choose the 'give potion' option.
  • Book Covers Skyrim/Legacy of the Dragonborn - meshes and textures already included
  • Alchemist's Backpack
  • Alchemist's Compendium
  • Alchemist's Basement by Mentha
  • Alchemist's Basement - Player Home by Uzue
  • Pets of Skyrim CC - SHOULD be compatible now since I lowered the dresser. Please leave a comment if this is not the case so I can update the description! I would check but I don't have it.

Not Compatible:
  • Man Those Borders - adds guards at the nearby border gate who live in the shack
  • Interesting NPCs - has two NPCs who live in the shack, one of which is involved in a quest

If you notice an incompatibility, please let me know so I can add it to the description. I MAY look into making a patch, but I'm not particularly keen on making them for mods I don't personally use. If you would like to make a patch, please do! You can send it to me to host here or upload it yourself and let me know so I can provide a link.
