About this mod

This mod simply adds penalties based on the number of deaths recorded by Morogoth35's 'Death Counter' https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/16593. These penalties will remain in place across saves, so loading a previous save will not help you. You can however adjust death count in MCM if you believe that you were unfairly slain!

V0.3:

Major update from 0.2 as I wanted to draw a line under this mod for a while and have it ressemble a 'finished' status.  Will still be happy to try and fix any issues that are reported however.

Weakness = 1% reduction in all damage output (melee, ranged & magic)
Vulnerabilty = all damage received is increased by 1%
Failure = All skills are gain 1% slower
Shame = -5 to all skills.

The Basics:

For starters 0.3 is much harsher than 0.2.  Players will now receive +1% weakness, vulnerability and failure with every death and this goes all the way up to 45.  So at deaths 45 player will be receiving 45% more damage, doing 45% less damage and learning new skills 45% slower (ouch!)  Additionally, 'shame' now reduces all skills by 5 every 10 deaths, plus an additional -5 on hitting the dreaded 45 (more on that later)  So basically -30 all skills at 45 death.

... however:

The amulet 'Failure's Burden' (given on startup) is now alot better integrated.  Equipping it will remove all weakness, vulnerability and shame, BUT leave players with their 'failure', aka skill gain reduction.  Only way to remove this is to pray at a Shrine Of Arkay with amulet equipped.  This will grant 'Cleanse Death' blessing for as long as Arkay's Blessing is active and the amulet remains equipped.  Not only will this temporarily remove 'failure' it also removes MOST penalties applied by the amulet itself.

'Failure's Burden' Amulet:

As mentioned this is used to remove penalties (toss in ocean if you don't want it).  However it also adds more subtle penalties of its own, which I will leave players to figure out themselves!  As a rule, these are non combat and do not reduce damage received or increase damage dealt, or skills earned.  Might hurt your coin purse however, and you might find yourself less intimidating than you once were!  All these penalties can be nulified with the 'Cleanse Death' blessing but one will remain; your carry weight is reduced by 50 plus 1 per death.

The Dreaded 45:

The point at which this mod stops penalizing death is 50, but if you hit 45 things are going to go down hill fast!  Starting at 45 players receive 'Arkay's Abandon' and the amulet becomes useless (worse than useless it will still inflict its own penalties).  Players must live with the consequences of dying so many times.  Also you will begin to 'fade', i.e become slightly transparent.  From 46-50 transparency ammount increases and weakness, vulnerabilty and failure increase by 10% per death until they reach 100% at 50 deaths and you are literally a shadow of your former self.

At this point I recommend playing a new game or resetting your death count and promising to do better next time  :-).

Known Issues:

  • Once you hit 45 and begin to 'fade' you may want to roll back the death count.  From 45 it should be safe to roll back to any previous death number, but if you get all the way to 50 and then set counter to, for example 5, the fade effect remains visible.  Players must first set death count to 45, then 44 at which point your solid form should be fully restored an you're free to set the counter to anything.  Just a small issue, best thing is not to die that many times in the first place!
  • Even with 'Arkay's Abandon', players can still receive the vanilla Arkay Blessing, but no longer 'Cleanse Death' and thus it has no effect on the penalties of this mod.  To stop this, I'd probably have to modify the shrine blessings themselves and thus break compatibility with other mods effecting the shrines.  This is just a small 'immersive issue'.  If Arkay 'abandons' you, just abandon him, Talos is much cooler any way!
