This mod is causing some CTDs when buying from vendors that sell spell tomes. I'm thinking this is just a load order problem, but I can't think of what other mods this could be conflicting with
It's weird. I've been messing with my load order to see if I find any insight. As of now, all I can tell is when I activate this mod I get CTD. When I deactivate it I don't get CTD. It's weird man. I'll let you know if I find out what's causing it
Same. Strangely, but apocalypse spell tomes are replaced and do work just fine, but not the vanilla ones. Once I activate vanilla ones and talk to Farengar or any other vendor selling those, the game crashes, There's no any conflicts according to sseedit, really weird. UPD Everything seems to work correctly after starting a new game.
Did you load it on a new game or an already existing one? When I loaded it in an already existing playthough, it caused my game to crash instantly when opening inventory. I believe you need to start a new game in order for the spell tome changes to take place
I also found that after installing the tomb mod part way through a playthrough, the menu for tomb vendors caused a crash. Specifically, I installed spell research at the beginning of a game along with apocolypse and the base spell tomb mod. Later, I installed the patch for apocolypse and the game would crash when entering menu for spell vendors. I switched profiles in Vortex, then switched back to the initial profile and the patch works fine and no crashes.
Edit, started crashing again in same tomb vendor menu.
I do not know why, but this below tweak plugin fixes the crash. To me, this is a sign of a conflict some where this tweak is resolving without knowing it by changing spell tome names to spell Archetypes and making them none teachable. Maybe there is a quest needing the spell teachable, like the mage college one, causing an issue here; I haven't finished entering the college with the quest going. I tried generating my own patch and had the same issue too. I would say it was a result of running odin and apocolpyse, but no one else above says that it their issue. It also doesn't happen with the patches for those mods or dlc. Only happens with the main skyrim spell list. I tested this myself by generated patches for each esp with spells in it.
I'll do some more testing, but this for sure is most likely tied to removing the teachable tag from a certain novice level spell. The only other thing that can be causing this I haven't checked is having a spell tome/items on you. I'll do a proper clean save, where I remove all items, and try again to see if it is that or the removal of the teachable tag.
Okay, found this issue, and it's an interesting one to fix. You cannot have any altered tomes that are also spells you already learned/have. If you already know the spell, it causes the crash when it tries to load the tomes in the merchant inventory. The fix is tricky if you don't understand how to use a records editor. You have to reset any spells you already know to teachable status in their book record. I'm unsure if this is a vanilla bug or a result of a shared loaded mod between all error reporters.
Oh wow, thanks for bringing this to my attention. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to fix this (Though it seems reverting the novice spells may have?). This was/is my first mod and was my introduction to creating a mod. I'm still relatively new to that process. I'm actually at a loss for what to do with this mod now that it seems to be causing these CTDS.
I would ask some more experienced developers/modders. Off the top of my head, you could create a simple script that detects what spells the player has and tries to turn those spell tome records back to teachable as a hacky work around.
This mod is a real gem as an accompaniment to Spell Research. Unfortunate that it does indeed seem to be incompatible with existing saves, but that's only an inconvenience that many other mods share as well.
I'll hold onto it for my wizard playthrough!
To save time for others, I tried using Forget Spell to empty my spellbook to see if that cured the ctd while speaking to a vendor, but it still caused crashes, and the crashlog indicates crashing even on Stoneflesh and Magelight, so perhaps that will save you some time.
I'm trying to get this fixed on my save. What do you mean by "records editor"? Are you referring to an application like xEdit? I tried loading my save in ReSaver, but there don't seem to be any book records listed.
I don't seem to be able to post a bug on the relevant page so I'll post here.
Using the Apocalypse patch with Apocalypse 9.45.0 causes a CTD when trying to access the trade menu with a vendor (so far I've had it with all spell vendors in the College of Winterhold while using Immersive College of Winterhold, but not with the general vendor in the town). All of my mods and game are up to date, and removing the patch fixes the problem. I have other altered spell tome patches installed and they work fine, it's only the Apocalypse patch that causes the crash.
Only bad thing about this mod is that, with the newest updates to SR and all of the Patches made for it for most magic-involving mods out there, the archetypes shown in the books from this don't fit most of the time. They're either missing an archetype for the spell, or they have an extra one that messes up the entire spell recipe. Saw this happen with a bunch of different spells.
It's a good idea, and I took it and made it my own. I just changed the spell descriptions from the Better Spell Learning mod to Spell Reaserch. It turns out to be a cool combination.
Hi all ! It doesn't seem to be working for me. I only have Spell Archetypes for the vanilla spells (except Novice spells because I'm using "Altered Spell Tomes for Spell Research - Tweaks"). The Apocalypse ones (Novice or any level), are still Spell Tomes for some reason and are consumed when using to learns the spell. I changed the load order and even tried with the Apocalypse patch (the one they say is outdated), restarted a new game each time to see if it changes but still not working. I've seen people say that with the patch the Archetypes are wrong but I don't even have that so I really don't know what is wrong. I don't know if it's a bug or if I'm just missing something... I hope I can fix it somehow because I love the idea of this mod. If anyone knows where the problem comes from and/or how to solve it, I'll be very grateful ! I've also posted in "Altered Spell Tomes for Spell Research - Tweaks" in case someone had the same issue.
Just in case someone is wondering, this mod is compatible with Lucien's spell learning system. At first I was afraid it wouldn't work because the tomes are altered, but it actually works fine, Lucien can use the altered spell tomes as if they were vanilla spell tomes.
Also, the archetypes found in the spell tome for Dispel Magic from Apocalypse are wrong. Here are the correct ones : - novice, illusion, fire and forget, arcane energy (same as in the spell tome) - area of effect - self targeting - controlling - transforming
I have a sneaky suspicion that other spell tomes from Apocalypse may contain erroneous archetypes, I will extend this list if I find other errors.
Edit : So all of the Apocalypse spell tomes I have tested (5 so far) have erroneous archetypes. My current hypothesis is that the Apocalypse patch was made for the outdated patch compendium, and that the Apocalypse spell archetypes from the Spell Research Patch Compendium Redux are completely different than the ones from the former. So I strongly recommend not to use the Apocalypse patch if you have the more recent patch compendium, and to only use it if you have the outdated one. It won't harm your game in any way if you use the patch, but you won't be able to learn the Apocalypse spells through the spell tomes (obviously) and the archetypes they display won't help you to learn the spell you want, so you can only rely on the description of the spell to give you hints about the archetypes... And since the description on the spell tome is gone with this patch... You clearly won't have any benefit to use this patch. But if you have installed it, don't worry, it won't harm your game (But for the love of Talos, DO NOT UNINSTALL IT, because THAT will harm your game !! Uninstalling a plugin mid-playthrough without causing damage to your save file is the biggest myth in modding)
Love the idea of this mod! One small problem though: in order to study (To be able to write theses), you need a spell. How do I learn a spell when none of the spell books actually give me the spell(s)? Confused how I'm supposed to study what I don't have.
you can use alchemy or enchanting to research.. you should be able to find broken weapons or something that you can study the enchantments on. and you can break down potions and alchemy ingredients for concoctions you can study for reseach aswell. for the alchemy part i believe you need an alembic and a cauldron... both can be crafted.. but the cauldron is meant to be dropped down and used when its on the floor.. as it weighs 100.
Check the requirements section, there's a mod that slightly changes this one to make it so that novice spell tomes still act as vanilla. These tweaks are really a must-have, they should be part of this mod imo, otherwise early-game magic is way too hard, and it's not that hard to imagine a reason for roleplay purposes as to why novice spells would not require any research (Like, these spells are so simple that literally anyone can cast them, with little to no knowledge about magic required) (If you're especially lazy, here's the link to that other mod : Altered Spell Tomes for Spell Research - Tweaks)

The only spell mods I have are Arcanum, Archery Gameplay Overhaul, Immersive College of Winterhold and now, Spell Research.
Cheers.
Edit: Oh and the obligatory Better Vampires for we vampire players. :)
Edit, started crashing again in same tomb vendor menu.

This explains why new saves stop the crash.
