Do you remember the guards from the end of Dragon Rising? The ones who first call you the Dragonborn? Maybe not, since after the quest they're disabled and any guard you encounter is likely to think they "could be the Dragonborn and just not know it yet." This mod fixes that problem, giving you four new friends to talk with in Whiterun after the quest.

All dialogue is fully voiced using repurposed/edited vanilla lines.

Mod is an esl-flagged esp. Should be compatible with any mod that doesn't replace the Whiterun cell (aka not compatible with Open Cities) and that doesn't change final stage for MQ104.

Features:

To start, the four guard NPCs in the Dragon Rising quest who meet with Irileth in Whiterun now have unique appearances.
  • As with vanilla, if any of the guards die during Dragon Rising, they'll respawn in order to deliver their dialogue. With the mod, they won't get unique names until after the quest, that way any guards killed during the quest will just be other "Whiterun Guards" if you check the bodies.
  • After Dragon Rising, the guards are protected and can only be killed by the player.

After the quest, you can find these four NPCs patrolling in Whiterun. They are each called "guardsman" followed by their first names: Horulf, Leilof, Fringar, and Vilkhelm. Here are some details on their behavior:
  • The guards will be found patrolling Whiterun for the majority of days and nights.
  • If not in Whiterun, they can be possibly be found at the Western Watchtower, Whitewatch Tower, patrolling near Honningbrew, or visiting Riverwood on the weekend. Each guard has a different schedule and not all will visit the same place.
  • They will also eat dinner on certain nights at the Bannered Mare or Drunken Huntsman, but only for a short period to help with overcrowding.
  • Although they look like guards, they won't actually try to arrest you for crimes, only adding to your bounty. If you pickpocket them directly that betrayal of trust may be answered violently...

Each of the four guards will have unique lines to say upon first meeting you after the quest, after which you can ask them a couple of questions.

Installation:

This mod can be safely installed before or after Dragon Rising is complete. I would not recommend installing it during the middle of the quest.

To get the guards to appear, make sure MQ104 has completely finished (stage 200) and the Whiterun cell is reloaded (via fast traveling or just normally traveling elsewhere) following the completion of the quest.

Compatibility:

Note: If you see script file conflicts between any of my other mods, don't worry about it. They use identical copies of the same script, which causes Vortex/MO2 to see it as a conflict. You can let them overwrite each other in any order.

Not compatible with:
  • Open Cities

Some conflicts with:
  • Skyrim Unbound Reborn - Reported that guard NPCs will be present from the start of a new game in some situations as Skyrim Unbound likely completes the required vanilla quest stage early in order to spawn dragons from the start.

Compatible with:
  • Other city overhaul mods
  • Guards Armor Replacer (thanks to CyrusAmell and TheWatchman for testing)
  • Any mod not specified (if you find a conflict, let me know)

Load Order:
  • Load higher than lighting mods in order to prevent their lighting space changes from being overwritten
  • Otherwise sorting with Loot should be fine

Other Notes:

Shout out to the awesome Voice File Reference Tool 2 for making custom dialogue creation a lot easier.

If you enjoy this mod, keep an eye out eventually for my larger project, "Reviving Skyrim," which will include this mod's NPCs among many others. Reviving Skyrim will add unique NPCs to repopulate Skyrim as you clear dungeons and complete quests, giving you a reason to revisit old locations to see what's new. It'll also come with new quests and voiced dialogue like what you see here. Stay tuned for more!
