***UPDATE***

dabiggieboss has added a patch for people having issues using a controller, apparently his patch fixes CTDs.  Click here.

Introduction.

I recently played Horizon: Zero Dawn on the Playstation service and I was impressed enough by their take on fast travel that I sought a way to implement this in Skyrim.  TES4 and TES5 both have (in my opinion) a fair system for travelling fast:  If you discover a location you can travel there from anywhere outdoors.

However the trend recently has been to add more and more "survival" elements to games like these, including Skyrim itself, and a lot of mods out there add their own two cents to the mix, including more varied random encounters, different penalties for hunger, thirst, cold etc, so that using a fast travel system like this seems to destroy those aspect of gameplay...

So the "Kill a fly with a sledgehammer" solution was to just nuke fast travel entirely.  But sometimes you just don't WANT to travel the road from Rorikstead to Solitude for the 8,000th time, dammit... But you don't want to feel like you're cheating either!

That's where this system I find is quite fair.  You can still fast travel, but there is a price to pay:  You have to be prepared!  You must prepare for your journey with food, warmth and light to reach your destination, so it prevents you from being lazy and just "cheating" whenever you feel like it.

Of course there is always the console commands... but hey, mods can only do so much, right?

The specifics

More precisely, this mod disables ALL map-based fast travel from the game.  Carriages, ferries and the like will still work, and as far as I know other mods which add their own options of this style will still be available.  However, opening your map from anywhere in Tamriel will disallow fast travel with the typical "Fast travel is currently unavailable from this location."

In order to fast travel, you must now craft travel packs!   To do so, head to any cooking station and prepare your travel pack!  You will find it under the "misc" category.

By default, the recipe requires the following:

1 Torch
1 Wolf Pelt
1 Firewood
1 Bread
1 Red Apple
1 Grilled Chicken Breast
1 Cooked Beef

This will create one "Travel Pack" in the "misc" category of your inventory which weighs 20 pounds, by default.  When you click on this item (from an outdoor location, as in vanilla), it will open the map and fast travel will be enabled again.  After you arrive, the travel pack will be consumed and removed from your inventory.  (Note that if you change your mind and close the map, you won't spend the Travel Pack).

And voilà!  You now have a way to travel in Survival Mode, or if you're playing in vanilla Skyrim you will be discouraged from just flying all over the map like a Game of Thrones character in season 7.

Optional files

Since everyone's taste and demands are subjective, I have included several optional plugins which modify different aspects of the Travel Packs and their crafting.  All of these plugins are .esl flagged, which means that they won't take up precious plugin real estate (the 255 .esp limit).  Hooray!

HZD Fast Travel - food only recipe.esp

Replaces the original recipe with one which requires ONLY food.  The new recipe is as follows:

2 red apples
2 carrots
2 potatoes
2 bread
1 cooked beef
1 grilled chicken breast

HZD Fast Travel - more recipes.esp

Adds many different new additional recipes to the cooking station, which allows for greater variety and mixing/matching of the various items needed.  All told, there are a total of 41 (forty-one!) additional recipes.

Without listing them all, some examples include replacing a wolf pelt with a bear pelt, replacing one food item with another, and so forth.  All recipes still require a torch and firewood, however.

The obvious advantage to this plugin is immersion and versatility ("Darn!  I don't have an apple!  I guess I can't walk anymore..."), at the unfortunate price of a crowded cooking station UI.  The way the crafting system works, a single item can have multiple recipe entries, but a new "constructible object" (i.e. recipe) must be made for each variant.  That's why I didn't include these in the main .esp.

HZD Fast Travel - more recipes - food only.esp

As its name suggests, adds many additional recipes, which require only food.  A total of 28 (twenty-eight) new recipes are possible, with variations including things like horker loaf, tomatoes, and green apples.

This plugin has the same advantages and disadvantages of the one above.

Innkeepers sell travel packs.esp

Adds Travel Packs to most (maybe all?) innkeepers in vanilla Skyrim, including a handful of shopkeepers, all under the "misc" category.

Note:  For both "vendor" addons, a bashed patch may be necessary, since these plugins will overwrite merchant lists.

Solstheim vendors sell travel packs.esp

Same as above, but for a few Solstheim vendors.  (I didn't bother with Dawnguard vendors since there are no actual inkeepers in that DLC.)

Travel Packs weigh less - 10 pounds.esp

Travel Packs weigh less - 5 pounds.esp

Travel Packs weigh nothing.esp

These three are pretty self-explanatory.  By default the packs weigh 20 each, but I can understand not everyone would agree with that decision, so here are some options for you.

Acknowledgements and permissions

This mod wouldn't have been possible (at all!) without the help of Nexus user Narue, who did all the scripting.  Thank you!

The in-game model for the travel pack is from Lolzman1325's mod Leather BackPack - Special Edition, which accords "Asset use permission: You are allowed to use the assets in this file without permission as long as you credit me", which I am doing now!  Thank you!

As far as permissions go, I'm not uptight or anything.  If someone manages to get this working for another platform (LE, xbox etc) somehow, go ahead and upload it, just please credit me as the mod author, and also credit Narue and Lolzman1325 if their contributions are included in your version.

Feel free to make any modifications to my file if you please, or to use part or all of it in your mods.  Just please give me credit with a link to this page.

Have fun!
