Like many Skyrim fans, I’ve taken to the lore of Elder Scrolls and to the modding scene and become aware of the conflicts that often crop up between the two. Yeah, yeah, replacing Alduin with Thomas the Tank Engine is a blast and I’m not going to judge, but if you’re planning on a playing a game that sticks as closely to the lore as you can, you tend to be picky with what mods you use.

It can be hard to sift through what’s out there, so I decided to create this guide to help me pick which mods I wanted to add to my play-through. I decided to share it so others can use it to help customize their own Skyrim experiences.

There are three categories:
  • Canon: creatures that are 100% confirmed to exist in the Elder Scrolls
  • Canon Flexible: creatures that have not actually appeared in lore, but are similar enough to other lore-cannon creatures to get a pass. Includes several real-world animals that arguably make logical sense in the world of Skyrim as well as the Elder Scrolls at large.
  • Non-Canon: no reference of any kind to these creatures exists in Elder Scrolls cannon, with many having their origin in other games and media. Includes some real-world animals and paleo-fauna whose presence in Skyrim may be considered questionable

Further information is provided on how likely the creature in question would appear in the province of Skyrim, whether it appears in Legendary or Special Edition, or in other mods.
For now I have only looked at Mihail’s creature mods, but I’ll be slowly going through the most popular creature packs, analyzing their contents and adding more information accordingly. If you have any suggestions, questions, additions or corrections, feel free to post a comment. Please note that this is the first time I’ve done anything like this, so I appreciate the feedback. Also, a lot of this guide is really down to personal preference. It’s easy to justify the addition of any creature with a little creativity, so it’s all down to what you want. Happy modding!
