Skyrim Special Edition

About this mod

This NPC Makeover attempts to give all named female NPCs fresh and clean appearances with no dirt, wrinkles, war paint, or other blemishes. Overall, I've modified almost 350 NPCs.

Overview
At some point, I just got fed up with the appearance of many NPCs in Skyrim. The things that bothered me most were:

  • Wrinkles. I think Bethesda originally wanted these characters to be age 40 or 50, but they look more like 100 to 120.
  • War paint. It often obscures the NPC's features so much you can't even recognize the person beneath it anymore.
  • Dirt. Don't people in Skyrim know what lard, tallow, and water are for?
  • Orcs. There's really no rational (or aesthetic) reason why Bethesda had to make them all to be quite that ugly!

So I finally decided to do something about it. I started out with a few women, and just kept going, and going, and going... By the time I was done, I had modified almost 350 female NPCs, including ALL of the orcs (yes, even the unnamed ones). I'm afraid the result isn't always quite as lore-friendly as I might have wished, but it sure looks nice. :)

Version 2.0 (ESPFE) available!
I've decided to convert all my mods to ESPFE (ESL-flagged) versions wherever possible. This means these mods will no longer take up a slot in your load order. Please follow the instructions in the sticky post in the Posts section if you wish to update during a running game. If you're starting a new game, just install and enjoy.

I've also decided to only offer BSA versions from now on. If you need or want a version with loose files, download the Bethesda Archive Extractor and just extract the files from the BSA.

Requirements
This mod requires both the Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch (version 4.1.9 or later) and KS Hairdos (version 1.61F). It will NOT work without them!

Installation/Uninstallation
This mod is best used with a new game so the NPCs and their inventory are initialized correctly. If you do decide to install during a running game, please see the section on possible issues below.

I've uploaded a BSA version and a version with loose files. Most users will want to download the BSA version. The version with loose files is mainly for modders who use MO2. Just click the "Mod Manager Download" button and let your preferred mod manager do the work for you. If you insist on doing it manually, please use the BSA version and install it in the Data folder of your Skyrim SE installation.

To uninstall, again please use your mod manager. If you're doing it manually (really?), delete the BSA and ESP files from your Data folder. If you were using the loose files version and wish to uninstall manually, good luck!

Compatibility
I've tested this with Bijin, and I think it might work. Just ensure that any Bijin files are loaded AFTER both the BSA and the ESP of this mod. You should then get the Bijin versions of the NPCs instead of my versions. Same with any other NPC makeovers. Load the version you wish to see in-game AFTER my mod's files.

Possible Issues

Elder Race
In order to allow certain elderly NPCs to appear particularly wrinkled, Bethesda introduced a so-called "Elder Race". NPCs assigned to this race cannot have the wrinkled texture removed. I therefore re-assigned all Elder Race females to the Nord Race so I could change their appearance and get rid of the wrinkles. I couldn't find that this had any negative effects in the game, and I assume Bethesda only did it to facilitate the use of the wrinkled texture. If anyone should discover issues related to the Elder Race, please let me know.

Naked NPC Bug
If you install during a running game, you might run into the Naked NPC bug or see some strange clothing. If this should happen, open the console, click on the NPC, and type "resetinventory". That should do the trick. Worst case, disable and then enable the NPC after clicking on them in the console.

Black Face Bug
If you should encounter the Black Face bug, it's probably because another mod isn't completely overriding something in my mod. You'll need to figure out which one and ensure your file and plugin load order are correct. If the problem persists, it's possible I might have forgotten to correctly export the facegen data in the Creation Kit. In that case, open a Bug report in the appropriate section and tell me exactly which NPC. I'll check and ensure the necessary NIF and DDS files were properly exported and upload a patch asap. A last possibility for the black face bug can occur if the KS Hairdos version isn't compatible. In that case, try upgrading KS Hairdos SSE to the latest version.

But...Is It Lore-Friendly?
For the most part, yes. I might have gotten carried away with those gorgeous KS Hairdos and used too many open hair styles instead of having hair bound together, braided, or done up. Please forgive me if you find it breaks immersion. Also, there won't be anymore named, wrinkled women anymore, but I did attempt to make them look appropriately mature. Please let me know if I succeeded. I'm always open to constructive criticism (emphasis on "constructive"; if you're a troll, your comments WILL be deleted!).
