Introduction

Five years of werewolf modding led to this project, and before I say anything I would like to thank everyone who played the Tales of Lycanthropy or Moonlight Tales mod series. Without your support, I would have never made this mod. Thank you!

Be The Werewolf!

Moonlight Tales Special Edition is a complete werewolf gameplay overhaul including: lunar transformations, completely new perk tree with 32 unique perks, innovative roaring system, skin system, werebears, moon howling and revert form, werewolf looting and interactions, extensive human form powers, custom animations, sound effects and more!

Brodual Feature Video:

Perk Tree

Beware! Lord Hircine claims the souls of those unfortunate victims who fell prey to his deadly hunters... unto the eternal Hunting Grounds.

The addition of a lycanthropy perk tree was a welcome addition in Dawnguard for every werewolf player. However, it hinted on something much more grand that could be accomplished by extending such a system. Moonlight Tales Special Editions introduces a completely re-imagined form of the werewolf perk tree. There is not one perk that was simply altered... everything you see is created from the ground up. 32 unique perks await with a fresh selection of active and passive abilities for both Beast Form and human form!

You can read about each perk here in detail: Perk Overview

The perk tree installs itself in an automated manner. If you had any of the vanilla perks, they are safely removed and their perk points are refunded to you. If you had any saved up perk points, you will get to keep them. Your progress is secure.

Only the soul of a person contributes to perk progression. Hircine does not reward a hunter for feasting on bunnies and elks... However, unlocking each new perk only requires one more feeding then the previous one instead of the base game's twice as harsh system.

New Roaring and Active Abilities

In the original game werewolves could only have one roar equipped at a time. Modders later introduced the ability to 'hold down' your roar for an additional type, which increased the maximum roars at your disposal to two. Moonlight Tales Special Edition takes this to the next level by allowing you to use 6 different roars at the same time (without the need for SKSE or new hotkeys) by the use of the player's view angles. Essentially, you aim to activate different roars! These powers first have to be earned by unlocking their respective perks in the new perk tree.

Lunar Transformations

Skyrim offers picturesque views of the night sky and is faithful to details such as moon phases. In Moonlight Tales, your life as a werewolf or werebear is deeply bound to the stages of the moon. These transformations occur by themselves (forced) during nights depending on the influence of the Masser moon (the large moon in Skyrim). The transformation will last during the whole night and you will only regain your humanoid shape at 5AM in the morning. The transformation chance and many other details for each phase can be customized with the customization ring. Those of you who know the Tales of Lycantrophy mod will surely remember screen messages, warning the player about the imminent transformation. It's a full moon tonight!

Pre-Defined Presets:
Full Moon Fever - This preset is for players who wish to transform only on the night of the Full Moon. This will occur only one night every 24 in-game days.
Warg - The Warg setting spreads relatively small transformation chances to keep lunar transformations rare and surprising. On the night of the Full Moon you will always transform and on the night of the New Moon you will never transform.
Skinwalker - This is the default preset. The Skinwalker setting has balanced transformation chances to make lunar transformations happen occasionally but still not too often. On the night of the Full Moon you will always transform and on the night of the New Moon you will never transform.
Cursed Blood - The Cursed Blood preset comes with high transformation chances and will result in a lunar transformation almost every night. Only the night of the New Moon will provide some safety.
Nightmare - With the Nightmare preset you will transform every single night regardless of the moon phases.

Skin System

The skin system allows you to customize how your Beast Form will look like in-game. You can do this by equipping the configuration ring in your inventory, and then navigating to the Appearance Customization menu. Various talented authors kindly allowed Moonlight Tales to include their textures into one kickass package. See the Configuration and the Credits section for more information.

Other Features

Werewolf Loot

Werewolves can now interact with complex objects. This allows you to loot corpses and activate all targets. You still cannot use a lockpick, but you can crush locks if you obtain the Break Entry perk. This feature can be optionally disabled, see the Configuration section.

Web Destruction

Werewolves can now destroy spider web obstacles. (This is not possible without the mod.)

Artifact Changes

 • Ring of Hircine now grants it's power just by having it in your inventory. You no longer need to equip it on your character.

The werewolf totems of the Companions guild are no longer used to unlock roars. However, if you do obtain these artifacts you will receive a permanent bonus to your abilities after praying at them for the first time.

 • Totem of the Hunt extends the range to Roar of the Predator by 100ft.
 • Totem of Fear adds an additional 3 seconds duration to Roar of Terror and Bane of the Dead.
 • Totem of Brotherhood adds the player's armor value to summoned pets from Roar of the Pack and Call of the Wild.

Wolfkin Alliance

Wolves and werewolves are now friendly to the player even in human form, but only if you are a lycanthrope yourself. This feature can be optionally disabled, see the Configuration section.

Configuration

This section goes over what settings and tools you can reach by using the in-game configuration ring in your inventory. The configuration ring is called 'Ancient Ring' and it is added to your inventory after Moonlight Tales initializes for the first time. For this to occur you will have to be outside in the world of Skyrim for a few seconds. You must not be in-doors, you should not be in a scripted scene or in a tutorial sequence.

General Settings:

 • Wolfkin Alliance (ON/OFF - Default: ON)
When this feature is enabled, wolves and werewolves will be friendly to the player even in human form, but only if you are a lycanthrope yourself.

 • Transformation Back Animation (ON/OFF - Default: ON)
Transforming back into your human form plays a custom animation, in which your werewolf goes into a downed state. You are invulnerable for the duration of the animation.

 • Transformation Back Stagger (ON/OFF - Default: ON)
Plays a short staggering (stun) animation after you turned into your human form.

 • Werewolf Loot (ON/OFF - Default: ON)
When enabled, werewolves can interact with complex objects. This allows you to loot corpses and activate all targets. You still cannot use a lockpick, but you can crush locks if you obtain the Break Entry perk.

Combat Settings:

 • Change Difficulty Scale (No Scaling/Expert/Master/Legendary - Default: No Scaling)
Moonlight Tales offers the option to scale werewolf perk powers to stronger values if you play on higher difficulties or mods that make the game harder. This will not remove all the challenge that higher difficulties offer, but will lessen their negative effects on werewolves. Use these options if you feel your werewolf is too weak with your settings.

 • Knockback Cooldown (ON/OFF - Default: ON)
When enabled, the NPCs you knock to the air (with your werewolf power attacks) will enter a cooldown during which they are immune to another knockback effect for 10 seconds. The cooldown state will be indicated by a white glow shader around the NPC. Keeping opponents in a never ending continuous knockback does not feel balanced.

NPC Settings:

 • Roar Summon Type (Wolves/Werewolves/Wolves + Werewolves, - Default: Wolves + Werewolves)
This setting determines what type of Pack Member is summoned by the Roar of the Pack ability. Note that their stats are equal either way. You may choose to summon only wolves, only werewolves (werebears when you play as a werebear) or random selection that includes both wolves and werewolves.

 • NPCs Can Knockback (ON/OFF - Default: OFF)
When enabled, the NPCs can knock targets (other then the player) to the air with their power attacks. This is not recommended, as the AI has some trouble engaging targets that were knocked away. The setting is turned OFF by default.

 • NPCs Use Skins (ON/OFF - Default: ON)
When enabled, the werewolf NPCs you summon with Roar of the Pack will use the various skins from the selection available in Moonlight Tales.

 • NPC Shader Effects (ON/OFF - Default: ON)
When enabled, the wolf and werewolf NPCs you summon with Roar of the Pack will have particle and shader effects around them. For example Ice Wolves will radiate an icy aura.

 • Warning Sequence (ON/OFF - Default: ON)
When enabled, you will be able to sense that a Lunar Transformation is about to occur allowing you a moment to prepare. The screen will start to turn blood red, and you will hear increasingly intense pulsing sound effects for 14.5 seconds.

Moonlight Tales will stop all registered scripts and refund all spent perk points. If you do this only to refund perks, make sure to use the Restart Moonlight Tales option afterwards.

Installation

Moonlight Tales Special Edition does not require any other mod to be installed.
You can install it with Nexus Mod Manager, Mod Organizer or just manually drop the files in your Data folder.

The mod consist of the following files:
Moonlight Tales Special Edition - Textures.bsa
Moonlight Tales Special Edition.bsa
Moonlight Tales Special Edition.esp

If you wish to uninstall, follow these steps:
1. In-game use the 'Ancient Ring' configuration item and use the option 'Uninstall Moonlight Tales + Refund Perks' under the 'Tools' menu.
This will stop all registered scripts, refund perk points and restore perk values to vanilla.
2. Delete the esp and the two bsa files.
Done.

Compatibility

Moonlight Tales Special Edition is not compatible with any other mod that makes alterations to the werewolf perk tree. Mods that alter the PlayerWerewolfQuest or other vanilla werewolf assets are also not compatible.

The mod Race Compatibility is only compatible with Moonlight Tales if you delete the Scripts\PlayerWerewolfChangeScript.pex file.

Questions and Answers

- Can the mod be installed in the middle of a playthrough?
Absolutely. The mod is designed to initialize flawlessly at any time during a Skyrim playthrough.

- Will there be more features in the future?
It is possible, but not on the short term. The mod is complete in it's current form after months of being in intensive development.
The current focus is to support the mod, and to resolve any issues that players may encounter.

- Sinding's well escape animation does not play! Why?
This is a necessary evil. There is no way that you can introduce new animations of the kind into the game, without overwriting an existing one.

The only way that I could add the new Howl animation, is by replacing Sinding's escape. Sinding plays that 'escapes the well' animation once in the game. If you have the choice of having a new awesome animation for werewolves all the time, or that one time Sinding will climb out of the well, the choice is a clear for me.

Troubleshooting

- My character becomes a half werewolf after transformations (like wearing a werewolf suit) and items such as MTSE PXXX are equipped on my character.
This happens EVERY time because of the following reason: faulty installation and conflicting mods.

1) You have a mods that edits the following script:
Scripts\PlayerWerewolfChangeScript.pex
Please verify each mod that is werewolf related as you can only have one mod that modifies this script.
Moonlight Tales Special Edition does modify this script, so anything else has to be deleted.

2) You previously had a mod or mods that included edits to the script:
Scripts\PlayerWerewolfChangeScript.pex
Verify that these mods are properly uninstalled and their BSA archives and script files are deleted.
