I'm getting 1 perk per skill book for some reason. I've re-ran the patch just in case and also tried using "set SSB_GivePerkForEveryXBooks to 5" (which didn't exist). I looked into xEdit and found SSB_SkillBooksRequiredForPerk and tried setting that to 5, but that also didn't work. In-game command "set SSB_SkillBooksRequiredForPerk to 5" went through, but did not change my getting 1 perk per skillbook. Is there something I'm missing here or any other steps I could take?
I'm also not getting any in-game notifications about being ready to learn something new or progress to next perk.
I haven't played Skyrim in a long time. This is the first time I've tried running this many mods, so any help would be appreciated. This is what I have installed. I don't know what to look for. https://pastebin.com/TpZQp2XT
I also tried looking for that debug tool that was referenced in a post a couple years back but I couldn't find it.
Have you updated midgame or the bug happens on a completely new game? I specified that a new game is required for a reason. Yes, the global value was renamed (and the new name was already mentioned in the mod description). Since the mod apparently doesn't recognize it for you, i can only guess that you updated midgame.
I was having the same issues before trying to update, except that "set SSB_GivePerkForEveryXBooks to 5" went through but did not work. I just tried downgrading back to the previous version, ran the old patcher, still the same issues.
The first version was installed before starting the game.
I really want to use this mod but don't know what I'm doing wrong. :(
Idk what could cause the issue with the old version, since you say you installed it before starting the game. Anyway, the new version requires a new game when updating. And you can make sure that it works on a new game by starting a new game, then fast traveling to any skill book and reading it (for example, on a table inside Bannermist Tower in Falkreath hold, in the small unmarked bandit camp up to Riverwood, or at the necromancer between the Falkreath hearthfire home area and lake Ilinalta)
I don't think that's possible. Are you starting a completely new game from the main menu? Like, not using a save made right after the start? Do you see any messages when reading a book?
Yes, fresh new game from the main menu, sat through the whole cart and Helgen intro, teleported out once I got my hands unbound. No messages when reading the book. The single book also still gave a perk point. :/
Alright. I did try using that on a new save with a freshly-installed 3.1 and patch, but somehow I managed to completely break everything at some point and neither skill points nor levels were being granted by going to and reading that book so I kind of figured I fubar'd my game and called it a night. This is the first time I've played Skyrim since that last post, I figured I'd just reinstall the 2.3 version of the mod with that version of the patch and it's now working in my old save (I found another new book and got the 1/5 notification in the top left of the screen). I haven't changed anything else. I don't know what happened, but I'm not gonna touch anything while it's working again.
(Edit: it was just the one book that worked, still gonna just keep it as it is. >.>)
Thanks again for all your help, and I love your mod.
The new version i just released shouldn't require new game when installing for the first time, though it's a normal practice. Not all mods that require starting a new game to work properly mention that on their pages
Would you mind also uploading an optional file which merely comes with that cool feature you mentioned of always picking up a book directly without reading it - that simple? I've found most other mods trying to introduce this doing even more than that and having a buggy MCM, at least for me.
Nice idea, however I didn't get any perk points after reading well over 10 books. A few mods I have that could interfere with this are Simple Perk Points (adds a certain amount of perk points at start), 20% more skill points (submod of Ordinator perk overhaul - adds 2 perk points every 5 levels). Latest version of Experience also adds xp for reading books, perhaps it interferes with this mod? Should I try scripts from debug folder? I haven't started a new game since installing this mod, perhaps i should? If anyone has any idea how to solve this, I would be very grateful, love the idea in this mod, tnx!
It only conflicts with mods that directly change book records, you can check it via xEdit. Mods that alter books in other way (or don't alter them at all) shouldn't conflict, as if they would, they would also break some vanilla scripts attached to a few books. Yes you can use the debug opton, it will show <book number>/<number of books to get a perk> for the books you haven't read with the mod installed yet. If it doesn't show anything at all, you have a conflicting mod. Placing SSB at the end of the load order will not resolve conflicts if there are any but will make it work.
Base mod works like a charm, but I can't get any other options to work. I've tried every 5th book option, but it still needs 10 books. I've loaded the esp in SSEdit, changed the value SSB_GivePerkForEveryXBooks from 10 to 1 under global, but it still requires 10 books for a perk.
it seems it picks the changes only if you change the global variable on a new game. you can type in console "set SSB_GivePerkForEveryXBooks to 5" or any other value. Note: set it only if your counter lesser than the new value, though you can set the counter variable as well
wintersun's hermaeus mora deity gives a 1% bonus to favor when you read a skill book. do you have any idea whether this would still work? i can resolve any direct conflicts in xEdit but i wonder if anyone has some insights into this already
it doesn't change every book for this (althrought there is one i need to patch), so it doesn't conflict, but the bonus won't affect anything. although... 1%.... is there a difference? in any case we can't give player 1.01 perk points
well in that mod, there are very few other ways to progress your favor with hermaeus mora besides completing his quests, which can only be completed once. so you really need the skill books to still grant favor or your favor will just gradually go down and down as you forget to pray daily lol. as for 1.01 perk points i'm not sure what you're talking about. when i say 1% bonus to favor i'm not talking about perk points, i'm saying wintersun gives you a 1% bonus to your favor (a stat added by that mod) with hermaeus mora every time you read a skill book. but if this mod changes the scripts related to skill books or something along those lines, that system might stop working in wintersun, and i wouldn't be able to fix it since i don't know the first thing about papyrus.

Do you have any advice for how to proceed? Or am I gonna have to (sadly) drop this mod?
