A super-patch for "Coins of Tamriel" and "Exchange Currency"
(entirely script-free)

Would You Like To Know More ? READ THOSE ARTICLES :
 The Economy of Tamriel in the Fourth Era (not canon)
How to thrive in the New Economy (also not canon but actually helpful)
How the 10% commission on currency exchange actually works (definitely helpful)

Also, YES! There is a version with just septims and no medes. It's called Copper In Your Pockets, check the files.

Everything started when, as I was playing Skyrim again after so many years, a question suddenly popped into my head and refused to leave it :
How is it possible, more than 200 years after Uriel Septim VII's death, that the imperial coin still represents Tiber Septim ?

The Mede Dynasty has taken the throne for almost 185 years. Furthermore, as we are all well aware now, the White-Gold Concordat harshly punishes any worship of Talos, Tiber Septim ascended. So, knowing this, how comes the main currency on Tamriel still represents Tiber Septim on the heads side?

Titus Mede as a new emperor would have made sure his name and dynasty would be featured on imperial currency.
When a new dynasty still struggles to gain legitimacy, there's nothing more harmful than leaving an unrelated and unquestionned great ruler in people's purses and memories for too long. And even if we argue that the coin can be taken as a representation of Talos, then the Thalmor would certainly not be happy about it still circulating.

I posted the question both on the Nexus and Reddit, but it seemed like I was the only one who cared about such a discrepancy.
Alone and sad with my nerdy fixation, I had to go on playing with a coin that I didn't like for its obvious anachronism.

And then, a week later, Arthmoor published a small texture replacer that made the coin feature Titus Mede the first.
This meant the world to me. Not only because my problem was answered to by a mod artist I really admire, but also because this single texture suddenly rekindled my modding flame.

After 3 days (and nights) of fine-tuning, cleaning, upgrading and fixing, I finally am able to present to you my "Medes in Your Pockets" super-patch, made to
complement two mods I absolutely love :

This patch is ENTIRELY SCRIPT-FREE and comes in two flavors.
You only need to pick and download the one you prefer, and install or remove them at will even in the middle of a save.

VERY IMPORTANT :
This patch is designed to be EXCLUSIVELY compatible with >> Coins of Tamriel Hardcore Edition Version 2 Script Free <<.
Make sure to install the correct version of the mod if you use Force70's all-in-one installer, any other version will NOT work as intended!

The light version only requires Coins of Tamriel to work.
It defines one master ESP : Coins of Tamriel V2 SSE Hardcore Edition.esp (the script-free version)

Features :

  • All the gameplay changes originally brought by CoT are untouched : 3 different imperial coins, and new nordic and dwemeri coins spawning in ruins;
  • A new visual experience entirely truthful to the original mod philosophy;
  • Cleaned-up textures and mesh pathing for better visual comfort.

In-game changes :

  • The main currency in Tamriel is now the copper mede, the septim has become a very rare and valuable coin, or has entirely disappeared in favor of the gold mede (your choice);
  • You can also stumble upon some rare silver medes. Due to technical limitations, silver and gold coins are not integrated to the economy in the light version, you have to barter them with merchants;
  • Text dialogues take this change into account, you will pay people in medes when they ask for money;
  • Nordic coins from CoT have been renamed "Dovahs";
  • Dwemeri coins from CoT have been renamed "Dumacs".

The light version leaves the coins weightless.
It is the recommended patch if you just want to add flavor to your game and play with thousands of coins in your pockets and not a care in the world.

This super-patch builds upon, and requires, both Coins of Tamriel and Exchange Currency to work.
The Economy Overhaul version defines two masters ESPS :
  • Coins of Tamriel V2 SSE Hardcore Edition.esp (the script-free version)
  • SL99Exchanger.esp

Features :

  • A patch that aims at bringing the synergy between Coins of Tamriel and Currency Exchange to its full potential;
  • Obviously all changes brought by Medes In Your Pockets Light;
  • A complete integration of the mechanics introduced by Exchange Currency;
  • The silver and gold coins are an integral part of Skyrim's economy, you will have to exchange your currency if you want to travel lightly;
  • Carefully weighted coins, thought for practicality and lore-friendliness;
  • Textures replacers for the Merchant and Company Notes.

In-game changes :

  • Silver and Gold coins cannot be "sold" to merchants anymore, they are meant to be exclusively traded by currency exchange.
  • Of course, as for the original mod, a 10% commission will be applied on currency exchange unless you obtain an exemption.
  • Antique coins are not integrated to the economy. You will have to barter them with merchants to the best of your ability.
  • Upon installing this patch, you will soon realise that gold and silver ingots CANNOT be sold anymore either.
    They are now considered an integral part of the Tamrielic economy, and are treated as such.
  • Do not worry : unrefined gold and silver ORES can still be traded. You can also still melt your own ingots, and you can still forge jewelry.

A complete, 4-parts article has been published here to explain in detail how the economy works in Skyrim with "Medes In Your Pockets - Economy Overhaul".
I strongly encourage you to go read it.

Requires Arthmoor's SEPTIM TEXTURE REPLACER.
Arthmoor's replacer is actually the mod that inspired me to create this patch, it is only fair that I made a compatible version for it.

If you want to have all the coins in the game feature Titus Mede I, even the gold coin (left as a "Gold Septim" by default), you can choose this option.
This version makes the gold coin appropriately named "Gold Mede" ingame, and provides a specific mesh to best fit the texture.

  • You will obviously need to download COINS OF TAMRIEL (Hardcore V2 script-free) and EXCHANGE CURRENCY depending on your version.
    REALLY IMPORTANT : Again, this patch is built upon Coins of Tamriel Hardcore Edition Version 2 Script Free.It will NOT WORK AS INTENDED if you use any other version of Coins of Tamriel, particularly not the scripted versions.
  • If you want to play with the "Gold Medes" version, use Arthmoor's SEPTIM TEXTURE REPLACER.

Voiced dialogues still say the word "septim" though...
I'm sorry, but this is the extent of my capabilities. I just can't fix EVERYTHING Bethesda messed up.
I've tried to explain this in the article The Economy of Tamriel in the Fourth Era. But I can't do much more.

Is this compatible with...?
This patch is all about coins.
  • It is 100% compatible with ANY vanilla coin texture replacer you might use. The vanilla coin (formerly named "gold") has become the gold coin.
  • The Economy Overhaul version gives weight to coins. Other mods giving weight to coins become redundant and should be uninstalled or re-ordered accordingly. Otherwise, tread carefully and inspect your load order if you have other mods dealing with item weight, and everything should be fine.
  • Finally, it should work just fine with most economy balancers like Economy Overhaul and Speechcraft Improvements. Make sure to put MYIP after them in the load order to ensure compatibility.

Could you make a patch for...?
Making a patch to change a couple dialogues is super easy, barely an inconvenience. If this is what you ask for, I can look into it and make a quick fix.
If you're asking for mechanics, it will take a lot more time, and I will make my decision depending on each case.

Are your "mini-patches" also working for "Copper In Your Pockets"?
Yes. I took the decision to have them replace the word "gold" with the neutral term "copper", which fits with every version.

Could you make an Oldrim/LE/XBox version?
First things first : This is a patch. Which means that for it to exist on your prefered version would mean that the two original mods ALSO already exist on it.
Second point : I do not play any of those versions, and I do not own an XBox. So porting this would be difficult for me as I lack both the games and the tools required.
IF you have the ability and IF the conditions are met, you can contact me via private message to tell me which version you would like to port by yourself. I will be happy to give you insight and tips.

... Could you make a standalone version then?
Hehehe, nice try.
Yes, it would be really easy for me to make a standalone version, but out of respect for Force70's and UNI00SL's work I will not.
The magic of this overhaul entirely relies on THEIR MODS, and I refuse to steal that from them.

Can I make a translation?
I hereby authorize any translation of this patch in any foreign language, as long as it is made in a respectful manner and in accordance with the
free modding philosophy.
Remember to credit all creators accordingly.

Will you upload this to Bethesda.net?
No, I won't.
I am particularly outraged by Zenimax and Bethesda's general attitude towards the modding community in recent years, especially since the paid mod fiasco back in 2015, and more recently with their so-called "Creation Club".
I therefore refuse to endorse their platform.

This patch is exclusive to Nexus Mods and shall remain so.
If you see it distributed or sold on any other platform, even under the name invock, it means that it was stolen and reuploaded.

I would like to particularly give my thanks to :

  • Force70 and UNI00SL for their respective mods that I enjoy so much, as well as all the people that helped them in their creation.
  • Arthmoor, a mod author that I really admire and without whom this patch would only have remained wishful thinking;
  • kingtobbe, creator of the awesome Mede coin texture, for his authorisation to reuse his asset.

>> PLEASE DON'T FORGET TO ENDORSE THEIR MODS IF YOU ENJOY MINE!

I would also like to thank the people at Nexus for their amazing work in so many years. Their continuous effort brings the modding community together and makes it remain strong in spite of all corporate greed.

Finally, I want to thank you for downloading this patch. I sincerely hope it will help enhance your immersion into the glorious world of Tamriel.
