About this mod

Play as a powerful vampire that can gain strength and unique abilities by not feeding, but gets weaknesses to silver and fire in exchange. Or, play as a Van Helsing style vampire hunter who loads up on silver bolts and goes hunting for the creatures that go bump in the night.

Have you ever thought that the vampires in Skyrim are a little weak, boring, and... well, mortal? Have you ever wanted vampirism to convey powerful supernatural abilities, with an actual incentive to feed, instead of just becoming blood starved and having no one notice? Alternatively, have you ever wanted to play as the intrepid vampire hunter, creeping into a den of evil with only your trusty silver blade? Then this is the mod for you.

Vicious Vampires seeks to make vampires powerful and scary without being gamebreaking, for both the player and the NPCs of Skyrim. It will also give you the tools you need to level the playing field against the creatures of the night.

The General Idea

You get more powerful and gain unique abilities the longer you go without blood (as you descend farther into feral vampirism and away from humanity) and you get buffs to health, stamina, and frost resistance, but your weakness to fire and sunlight increases dramatically. When you're fully blood starved, you're at your most powerful but you also have to watch out for fire and sunlight, and NPCs will recognize you as a vampire and be hostile.

Drinking blood lets you blend in and walk in the sun by briefly becoming more human, but you sacrifice your extra vampiric strength and most vampire abilities. This creates a gameplay incentive for both going without feeding (to get more powerful to conquer a dungeon) and feeding (to blend in so you can walk in the sun or return to town without getting attacked).

Additionally vampires always need to fear silver weapons, which do bonus damage and halt their passive health regeneration.

You can also play as a vampire hunter, using the new arsenal of silver and celestial silver weapons to battle powerful NPC vampires. This mod is compatible with Better Vampire NPCs! (see compatibility section for details)

Features

Strong Vampires: Vampires are supernatural creatures with appropriate powers.
  • All have constant, significant health regeneration along with boosted stamina and magicka regeneration.
  • Gain increasing health, stamina, and frost resistance buffs with each level of starvation.
  • Unique unlocking abilities as starvation continues:
Bloodstalker: Creatures with blood pumping through their veins can be seen through walls. Costs 85 magicka, lasts 60s.
Supernatural Reflexes: Able to move and react faster for 15s. Grants a slow time effect in exchange for continuous stamina drain.
Vampire's Servant: Increased level cap so it's useful throughout the game. When fully starved, can resurrect NPCs of any level.
Vampire's Seduction: Can charm the weak minded into allowing you to feed.
  • Retains vanilla Skyrim's immunity to disease and poison, plus immunity to drowning and an unarmed damage bonus.
  • Resistance to fall damage, and completely immune when blood starved.

Big Weaknesses:
Nothing is invincible.

  • Sun damage: Vampires slowly burn to death in the sun. Disabled only when they've recently fed, and ramping up as time passes.
  • Fire: Vampire's dry flesh burns easily, and the weakness to fire increases the longer they go without feeding.
  • Silver weapons: Deals bonus damage to the undead and vampires, does minor magicka and stamina damage, and halts their healing. Any vampire careless enough to hold silver weapons or jewelry will find their flesh burning at the contact.
  • Hated by All: When completely blood starved, your eyes glow a predatory yellow and everyone can see you for what you are. Non-guildmate NPCs become hostile to you, forcing you to avoid towns or feed to blend in.
  • Ashes to ashes: When killed, vampires disintegrate to ash.

Silver Arsenal: An unprepared hunter is a dead hunter.
  • Added in silver maces, warhammers, daggers, bolts, and arrows in addition to the vanilla sword and greatsword.
  • All can be found on enemies and shopkeepers around Skyrim.
  • Can be crafted at a forge using the steel smithing perk, and can be fully upgraded.
  • At higher levels rare Celestial Silver weaponry can be found, which glows faintly and deals crippling damage to undead and vampires.
  • Celestial Silver can be crafted with either the Glass or Ebony smithing perks, and has equal damage to ebony. Requires rare starmetal ore, which can be found on mountain tops or near shrines (like Azura's statue).
  • Organizations like the Silver Hand and the Vigilants of Stendarr will make good use of silver weapons. The Dawnguard use silver bolts, and Dawnguard axes can halt vampiric healing on contact.

Check the readme in the "docs" section for detailed patch notes.

Also note that you can always view your current vampiric buffs/weaknesses by looking under the active effects section of the magic menu.

Compatibility

Vicious Vampires is now compatible with Better Vampire NPCs!
  • I have uploaded an optional patch file called ViciousVampiresBVNPCPatch which will allow the two mods to work together correctly.
  • Better Vampire NPCs adds a ton of new types of NPC vampires, with unique gear, using abilities from the Better Vampires mod. Combined with my mod, all NPC vampires will have constant health regeneration, which can be stopped by silver weapons.
  • Make sure you use the No Appearance Changes version of Better Vampire NPCs.
  • Note: Better Vampire NPCs was not balanced with vampiric regeneration in mind. Only the most daring and well equipped vampire hunters can hope to defeat them with both mods activated at once.

This is a vampire overhaul mod; other vampire overhauls like Better Vampires and Sacrosanct are not compatible.

Vicious Vampires is compatible with anything that doesn't alter the PlayerVampireQuest script, alters the RaceVampire attributes, or changes silver weapon attributes (changes to .nif files are fine, so scabbard and visual overhaul mods work).

A compatibility patch for Ars Metallica has been created by Gota115, ensuring all the silver weapon recipes are consistent.

Installation

NMM Installation: Simply use the install button on NMM
Manual Installation: Unpack the download files and drop the .esp and .bsa files in your skyrim data folder. Then, from Skyrim's main menu, select Mods -> Load Order and make sure ViciousVampires is turned on

Vicious Vampires works most cleanly with a fresh character, but you can make it work with an existing character. Make sure that you aren't a vampire and you aren't holding any silver weapons, then make sure you're in a cell that has no vampires in it. Then activating Vicious Vampires will work just fine.

If you need a quick vampire cure, Falion in Morthal will cure you in five minutes flat.

Un-installation

As a general rule, uninstalling mods can lead to instability in any saved game that previously had the mod installed. If you want to uninstall Vicious Vampires and continue using a character made with Vicious Vampires, make sure that you are not a vampire, that you don't have any silver weapons in your inventory, and that you are not in the same cell as any vampires.

Feedback

I welcome feedback and suggestions. If you find any bugs, please don't hesitate to post a comment and I'll fix it ASAP.

Known Issues

Silver arrows vanish when fired at the ground or wall (they work just fine against living targets, and can be recovered from corpses). This is an unavoidable side effect of enchanting arrows; the only way to do it is to mark them as projectiles which cause an "explosion", and the explosion applies the effect. However, explosions also despawn the projectile, making the arrows disappear.
