Reading Is Good v2.0 has been released! The mod has been significantly reworked, so I've changed the name of the plugin to denote that it is essentially a new mod.

When I originally created v1.0, I had severely underestimated how many mods were adding their own skill books, and I did not make that version with very much patching, or large numbers of skill books, in mind. The new rework makes it easy to patch in any number of additional skill books from other mods using the xEdit Patcher.

Also, for those of you who wanted to make your own edits, I think the new perk format (replacing the old exponential mechanic) is much more conducive to doing so. You can edit cumulative bonuses directly, or increase the book cap by adding more perk entries. You can do this with either CK or xEdit, though I tend to think the former is easier. If you do use the CK, I recommend removing all the BOOK override records with xEdit first, since re-saving will screw up compatibility with Unread Books Glow, and the patcher is capable of restoring the correct overrides.

As an FYI - the zEdit patcher file you have linked on the description page no longer works with V3, as it is still looking for "Reading is Good 2.esp' to run.

For anyone who still wants to use it, fixing it is pretty simple.

      1. Open the file "index.js" in the patcher folder (ModReadingIsGood) with a text editor.
      2. Find the two (2) instances where "Reading Is Good 2.esp" appear in the file, and replace them with "ReadingIsGood.esp"
      3. Save the file.

Some other changes have also been submitted by someone as a pull request on that GitHub repo, which some may wish to add. For example, a change that makes this patch merge to a zPatch.esp (which is used by a lot of other patchers, saving unnecesary additional plugins from being generated).

      Thank you for this!

Stupid question: Should we also change patchFileName from 'Reading is Good - Patch.esp' to 'ReadingIsGood.esp'? Right now zEdit says 'no patches to build' presumably because there is no Reading is Good - Patch.esp file.

Is there any interest in a patch for Trua - Minimalistic Faiths of Skyrim? It would take a bit of effort to put together, so before I do, I would like to know if the audience for that mod overlaps with this one.

Hey, I'd be happy if you could do that I've been loking into it through SSEEdit, but, honestly, I couldn't figure out how to make them work as I don't know much about modding So I came here with the very same purpose to see if there is some activity regarding the patch.

I would also be interested. Would that technically also work with Wintersun? Is the patch even a possibility or was the audience sadly not big enough?

I use Trua and would be happy to see a patch. Thanks for asking.

Would it be possible to, when a skillbook is read, check if it's more than the seventh one and give the skill level bonus? I mean you'd have to have quite a few mods adding skillbooks for that to be an issue, I think, but it seems a shame to waste the extra ones.

Eh, technically you can edit yourself to do this, but it's a big pain in the butt. It'll probably be possible when I eventually rewrite this as an SKSE plugin.

Ah, yeah, I should have thought about that. I'm using Lexy's LOTD modlist, plus some other stuff, and am familiar with using SSEEdit to make a conflict resolution patch for the other stuff, so all I need to do is revert all but 7 (per skill) of the changes your patcher produced.

Edit: So, I have 5 each from SSE, 1 each from LOTD, and assorted skill books from Project AHO, Vigilant, and others from Lexy's LOTD (Immersive College of Winterhold has a bunch, and one each from another half dozen). I only had to revert 13 books (and I have 6 skills that only had 7). Conjuration could have gone to 10, 3 skills could have gone to 9, 4 to 8. So, as it turns out, not a particularly big deal.

    Hi!
Is it possible to get the "# skillbooks read" status in General Stats.
Classic Classes and Birthsigns have a trait in one of the classes that adds a bonus per # of skillbooks read. Possibly other mods too.
    Would be nice to know.
    TY
    ---------
Temporary solution for anyone needing it; open console and type ModPCMiscstat "Skill Books Read" # (capitol letters not needed)

I didn't know there was such a stat. I might be able to fix it with an update.

Using this mod with Lexy's LotD Guide and want to check it's installed, patched and working correctly (guide contains the Skyrim Skill Uncapper Mod incase that effects things). When picking up a skill book I get the "Insight Gained" notification and there appears to be no errors but is there a console command I can use to "KNOW" that the increase to leveling speed has been correctly applied? i.e. is there a Global name that can be viewed before and after?

Parapets, or anyone else that reads this- is there some way to get this to work with MoreHUD? I saw that it's on the incompatible list, so I understand that. Is that they affect the same values? or what's the problem between the two mods? Thanks for any responses. :)

Unfortunately, the only way I can prevent books from giving you a skill point is by removing the skill from the record. (The Perk Entry Point "Adjust Book Skill Points" does not work.)

Well, you could add an option to your patch so it appends the increased skill to the book name. Not exactly compatibility, but it would serve the same function.

It's only partially incompatible - MoreHUD just won't tell you which books are skill books. Both mods will otherwise work fine. Worth the trade-off for this mod's features IMO.

Thanks Velgath, that's great to know.

What would having moreHUD overwrite RIG in the list do to RIG's functionality?

Is it possible to use a book renaming mod to signal a skill book or something like Books Glow(can't remember exact name right now) to get that function back?

I've been using Unread Books Glow and it works fine. I might look into adding an option for the patcher to add the skills to the book names.

would it be possible to add an invert "Scholar's Insight perk" to the player that "increase" the amount of skill point gained by -1? doubled if the player has Scholar's Insight. This way you dont need to change the books them self. Each time you read a book you get your skill exp increase and an skilllevel increase. just that the skilllevel increase is 0.
And moreHud would still be able to detect the books because they are still normal skillbooks

I mentioned it earlier, but it was one of the first things I tried. It won't go below 1.

I just noticed that the game can no longer count the skill books read.
The most obvious side effect is that it is no longer possible to receive the "Reader" achievement (read 50 skill books).
Mods using this stat will also be affected (like Wintersun - Faiths of Skyrim).

Is there any way to make the game count these books?
or maybe some CCommand that can be used to increase the amount of skill books read manually?

Does this include the Ogham Infinium from the base game that adds 5 skill levels to multiple skills across the board? How does that work, does it add a learning modifier to all the skills it affects?

Also is this compatible with Legacy of the Dragonborn?

Oghma Infinium is unchanged, it behaves just like vanilla game.
Oghma Infinium is not really a skill book by the way, it works through scripts/quest alias. It's completely different from "real" skills books.

yes, Legacy of the Dragonborn is compatible, you will need to use a Smashed Patch to merge the book covers (added by LotD) - I load my Smashed patch just after Reading book patcher.esp.

Is this compatible with Simply Balanced? - the experience, difficulty, gameplay tweaker.
