After getting an impression that the mod doesn't work (100 xp version) I removed it and did some testing using the main file which is said to give 500 xp per book. For this I've cleared a library of unread books (Thalmor HQ on a pretty fresh character), the total number amounting around 80 unique titles. My skill at that point was 30 (which is really low) and I barely leveled up 2 points.
To be precise, it took exactly 35 books to level Speech from 31 to 32. And that's A LOT of reading (if you do it properly, not just open/close). It makes me wonder how does the math work. The UESP page says you need 529k skill-xp to level Speech from 15 to 100. You'd think that I got 500x35=17,5k xp which would have been a fairly good amount compared to those 529k. But it seems that 0.36 (skill use) multiplier is applied to it, because otherwise it is not possible to explain how I got only 1 skill point while still being at the bottom part of the skill xp curve. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Therefore, the real amount of skill-xp per book must be 180, not 500. And it would mean that even with the highest xp version of the mod you need to read 3000 unique books in order to level up the skill completely. I sincerely doubt there are that many in the whole Skyrim, even if you include spelltomes, recipes, journals, notes and books from other mods (the Lost Library adds less than 300 books from 3 (!!) previous games).
So yeah, this mod doesn't seem at all like a cheat tool for powerleveling (unless you have a repeating readings bug and abuse it). But honestly, I was expecting it to be rewarding for those who like collecting and reading books. It felt like an immersive idea to improve speech from spending time in libraries, learning about history, arts and crafts, peoples, customs and folklore. Alas, the reward seems to be meager. Yes, at skill 15 you might get the impression that you level up fast, but then the xp curve hits mercilessly and does so very very early. But that's the thing - it's quite unlikely that you get to a library when your skill is 15. And at 30+ you can spend an IRL hour or two actually reading books, and barely notice any change in skill...
Late as frack post, but interesting read and mirrors my experience, too. I originally started with the medium version and while those first few levels came fast, the skill progression quickly bogged down. I kept wondering why, but thanks to you mentioning it, I had totally forgotten about the SkillUseMult stat, which would explain it. Unfortunately my character had already read over half the books in Skyrim before realizing this, but now I know.
So if anyone else is reading this: definitely go with the 500 version. It comes fast when your speech level is low, but it definitely slows down as you're not nearly getting as much XP as you think. On the other hand, it's kind of free and easy XP that was never intended to be part of the game, so make of that what you will in terms of balancing.
I don't remember how SkillImproveMult plays into it either. Here's the wiki, if anyone else is interested. I'm a brainlet when it comes to math, unfortunately.
literally maybe how speechcraft is improved in real life. Once you can read books, you can accelerate your talking, speaking and basically just and maybe more than but at leas lanaguge self expressions skills to a certain point specific super boost until improvements real noticeable effects are less visible. VERY FRIENDLY IMMERSSIVE AND LORE FRIENDLY MOD. BECAUSE JUST LIKE REAL LIFE BABYYYYY.
I had to chuckle a little bit when I gained 500xp for reading "Ulfr's Book" (it's completely blank)
Also, be careful with mods that add a lot of notes and such. If you're okay with getting a lot of experience points to level up your speechcraft - a skill that is already notoriously difficult to level up - then you'll be fine. However, if you don't want your immersion broken or feel it's too easy, then I recommend the lower EXP mod.
Examples of mods that add extra reading materials: -The Notice Board -Missives
Even though they're just 1 page, you get a TON of extra experience points over time. Take that as you will.
You can pick lesser XP version if your afraid to gain to many xp with this mod. But it was already discussed in comment (check sticky) and at the end the 500 xp is pretty balanced.
Great mod!!! But I think you should not get XP from random notes or letters IMO... or at the very least, heavily decreased XP... Getting the same amount of XP from readin a bandit's note compared to one of the short novels doesn't really make sense.
i hope u dont mind if i'm necroposting this. u can just imagine ur character trying to comprehend what's written on letters, such as Mysterious Note, with the vague message, therefore your character uses his wits to improve comprehension ability which then used to speech skill maybe?, such little imagination helps with immersion IMO.
Since 1.6.1130 my Eloquent reader isn't working any longer . No error messages, but no experience from reading books any longer or the "Your mind feels enriched by this text".
Hope it starts working or gets updated! Love this mod!
Thank you! I feel like this mods make more sense than in vanilla. I mean,My LDB is like a breton come from high rock,And studying about Skyrim culture and people. And everytime he need to do it,He have to read some book while asked his follower,Lydia.
When Bethesda making TES6,There's so much to be learn from modders. Like how to make game immersive and detailed,While also not make it aged poorly.
Thanks for this mod! Helps with the Legacy Of The Dragonborn mod where the library inside allows you to display books. I have a reason to read the books which helps to know what books I have and not have to put into the library. :D
