About

Better Magical Progression adds a more realistic progression system to all the schools of magic.
  • Simply using a spell is enough for your magic to get stronger.  You do not have to have a target.
  • The more magicka a spell costs, the more progression your character gets from casting it.
  • No matter which school of magic you use, your total Magicka will increase.
  • As you use magic, your spells will become stronger and cost less magicka to use.
  • Each school of magic has its own progression progress.  Using Restoration magic will only make Restoration magic stronger.
  • There is no hard-coded cap in this mod.  Grow far stronger than what vanilla Skyrim would allow.
  • Because this mod can quickly unbalance the game with the need to add to magicka upon character level-up no long necessary, starting spell stats have been changed.  You will start as a realistic novice in spell-casting.  Your spells will do next to nothing.
  • Has a configuration menu that can be accessed at any time by casting the Better Magical Progression Config spell.  It should be under the Alteration category in your Magic menu

Mod Compatibility

There should be no outright conflicts with other mods, though if you install multiple mods that affect spell damage and magicka cost, the results may be odd.

For the No Requirements version, spells added by other mods will feel the effects of this mod.  In other words, they should get stronger and the magicka required to cast them should decrease, but spells added by other mods will have no effect on any progression this mod adds.  With this version, only vanilla spells work with the progression.

For the SKSE version, all mod-added spells should work with this mod.

Naturally, no guarantees can be made.

Bugs/Undesired Features
Spells that can be constantly cast, like Flames and Sparks, only give exp towards progression once, no matter how long it is cast.

To-Do
Use the SKSE library to make this mod compatible with other mods.  Currently waiting for SKSE to be updated to the latest Skyrim Special Edition version.

Installing

This mod has two versions: the No Requirements version and the SKSE version.

The No Requirements version will run as is.  It does not need other mods to function.

The SKSE version requires the Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE) mod.

Both versions work with Nexus Mod Manager.

To install either manually, sinply download the latest version of the mod in the Files section.  Extract the downloaded .zip and place the contents of the resulting folder into your Data folder located in your Skyrim installation folder.

Uninstalling

(For version 1.1 + users)

While in-game, launch the Better Magical Progression configuration menu by casting the Better Magical Progression Config spell.  This spell should be located in your Alteration spell category.

Select the Disable option, then confirm your choice.

Afterwards, save your game.  Then you can use NMM to uninstall the mod, or if it was installed manually, simply delete the BetterMagicalProgression.esp file in your Skyrim/Data folder and the BetterMagicks.pex file in Skyrim/Data/scripts.

(For version 1.0 users)

Load up your save file.  Access the console by pressing the tilde/grave key ( ` ).  Type these lines into the console one line at a time.

player.setav "DestructionMod" 0
player.setav "DestructionPowerMod" 0

Do this for each school of magic, replacing Destruction with Restoration,
Alteration, Conjuration and Illusion.

When you are done typing the 10 lines, press the tilde/grave key to close the console.

Now confirm your spells are back to normal.  Save your game, then proceed to remove the mod by either deleting the files or using the NMM, depending on how you installed the mod.

Upgrading

Follow the Uninstalling instructions above.

When you have finished uninstalling the previous version, launch your game and load up your save file.  Simply save and quit the game.

Now you are ready to install the latest version.
