In the ~13 years that I've played Skyrim, I've only played it in one way: get me my greatsword, heads will roll! As a wise man once said - the Gods gave you two hands, and you use them both for your weapon. *rock music starts playing in the background*

Seriously, I can't play stealthy archers to save my life—always start off thinking, "Okay, this time I’ll see what they are on abou—oooh, a steel greatsword! SWING SWING BASH AAAARGH!"

So, this is like an ode to my own play style—the greatsword animation set to rule all greatsword animation sets for a vanilla-ish combat setup. (… if I'm honest, I really just wanted to create a few power attacks for fun, and then it ballooned way out of proportion). Comes with matching movement animations, idles, etc.

Is it realistic? Can you really swing a bigass two-handed sword like that? I doubt it. But is it fun and satisfying to use? Oh yeah - well, at least it was for me — I hope you can enjoy it too. My running theme for the animation set was fast swings, nasty kicks, devastating & satisfactory-looking power attacks, and — most importantly — looking cool while doing it.

OAR conditions are setup in a way so only the female player character uses it, if you want it for male PC, NPCs, Nazeem, etc - edit those conditions in OAR's menu under the GGSword submod.

Standing swings: long-reaching, wide coverage


Walking forward: first a mid-sized swing, then a piercing lunge forward


Running forward: quicker swings, less coverage


Standing power attack: slow, devastating, long (finisher-type move)


Running power attack: quick spinning move (not in any way inspired by the Witcher games)


Side power attacks: one’s a roundhouse kick, the other is a kick to the side



Backwards power attack: this actually attacks the space behind the character, marking the biggest departure from vanilla logic — allows you to break out of circles, but has limited use outside of it, so no backing away and spamming power attack for you


Running backwards: wide coverage, short reach


Walking backwards: similar, but slower and more to the side


Sprint attack: cool-looking slide


Sprint power attack: a big forward jump


Block bash: A KICK TO THE FACE

Requirements:
  • Open Animation Replacer
  • Precision
  • Vanilla Attack Annotation Fix (re-run Nemesis/Pandora after installing)
  • Animation Motion Revolution
  • True Directional Movement (this is optional, but that's what I play with, so the set was made with that in mind - I use Directional setting for combat)

Questions I’d wager are going to be asked:

MCO / BFCO?
No (at least, not planned so far). I don't have any experience with it, but if anyone wants to create an MCO pack out of this - talk to me, mayhaps we can work out something.

Legendary Edition?
No.

This isn't realistic!!
I know. So are dragons and magic shouting.

I don't like this-or-that animation.

Is it compatible with...?
No idea, I’ve listed what I use. It's an OAR mod that you can install and uninstall in one click without any consequences to your game — test it and let me know.

Something doesn't work!!
There are hundreds of mods that affect combat and its behaviours - I have no idea about your modlist, and I'm not here to play tech support in my free time. It works on my machine (c). However, do let me know about actual bugs like wrong annotations, bad animations, missing footstep sounds and stuff like that.

Any plans for other weapon types?
Not at the moment, Skyrim’s combat behaviours were painful enough to fight with so I don’t even want to look at any other weapon types right now >_<. Get something by Verolevi’s or KG’s 2-hander pack, they are very good.

What’s that armour in the screenshots?
Dracania by Aokili (the alternative version, with some Ásgards ^_^)

Credits:

The roundhouse kick, running forward power attack, sprint slide, sprint jump attack & probably a few others were inspired/adapted from Mixamo's free mocap animation library.
For the sprinting animation, I've used Verolevi's Leviathan sprint as a reference and recreated a very similar-looking one, since I think it's the best looking sprint on the Nexus and I didn't want to re-invent the wheel.
The walking forward lunge was heavily inspired by KG's greatsword power attack; it's great, and that’s one thing I’m genuinely a bit sad to lose after I started using my own pack — so I've made a little tribute to it.
