About this mod

Adds a "Parchment" item, and recipes to craft it from animal hides, which can be used in place of paper for crafting journals, spell theses, scrolls and spell tomes, so as to abide by the Green Pact.

Requirements
Permissions and credits
Changelog:
1.2 - Made the mod use FormList Manipulator instead to add parchment to Spell Research's paper formlist (the thing that lets you use parchment instead of paper rolls). Requires FormList Manipulator.
1.1 - Added inkwell recipe, uses Iron Ore and Frostbite Venom which makes sense as long as you only think about it a little, not too much, though.

Hunterborn Add-on:
Now comes with Hunterborn Add-on in optional files (which is, funnily enough, twice the size of the actual mod), adds recipes for (fine) and (poor) hides. More specifically, the (fine) hides now give the same amount of parchment as the normal hides used to, normal hides give half of that value rounded down, and (poor) hides give half of that. Using Hunterborn makes this mod slightly more difficult in the beginning so, yay progression I guess. Also changes the aforementioned inkwell recipe from Frostbite Venom to Hunterborn's "Mild Acid" which makes just a touch bit more sense, though I don't remember anyone making ink out of crushed up spider eggs.
Also added Forbidden Prey recipes to make parchment out of human skin. Embrace your inner Ayleid!

The Mod

Spell Research
is one of my favourite mods, but Bosmer don't like paper. Spell Research's paper is made from firewood, which is a big no-no (read the FAQ at the bottom), which means poor Bosmer cannot use it. So I made Parchment, which is a paper-like substance historically made from animal skin. It was typically Sheepskin, but I've allowed it to be made from any animal hide, including Werewolves. I was initially going to restrict it to just Goat Hides, but then I figured Goats aren't all that common near Winterhold so I added Foxes, then Wolves... And by the time I'd finished mental gymnasticing my way though the list of animal hides I'd already done most of them so it wasn't much more effort to add the rest.

Requirements and Compatibility

Requires the original mod, obviously. The "convenience add-on" isn't strictly necessary, but the weight of the parchment is balanced around being double the weight of that mod's rolls of paper (0.2 and 0.1 respectively), and all the crafting recipes are designed to reflect that.

This mod only changes 3 things from other places. 2 of these are levelled lists, one from Spell Research (also containing paper), but one "LItemMiscVendorMiscItems75" which other mods sometimes edit as well. The mod won't break or anything if there's a conflict there, you just won't be able to buy parchment from merchants.

What will probably break the mod though is if you have anything editing the "_SR_ListMaterialsPaper" FormID List, which is what Spell Research uses to determine what paper is. If you have any other mods that add alternatives to paper (like, say, scrolls from other mods) then you'll probably need to make a patch yourself. It's pretty trivial to do in SSEEdit, just look for the FormID List named in bold above, copy as override into a new .esp, and drag the items from both mods' version of the FormID list into the new mod's version. There's probably a simpler way to do that too but that's how I do it for stuff like this. Fixed as of 1.2! Thanks to Glanzer for telling me about this.

If you have anything that changes the weight of animal hides, while it won't be incompatible it might be a little unimmersive - The amount of parchment made is directly proportional to the vanillaweight of the hides, which means if you have any mods that makes animal hides lighter than they are in vanilla, you'll be breaking Lavoisier's law of conservation of mass which will see you jailed by the physics police. Also it'll be unimmersive, I guess.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can't Bosmer living outside Valenwood use plants for things anyway? I thought it only applied in Valenwood?
I have no idea. Some sources say they can, some say they can't. Auri gets mad at Faendal for being a woodcutter though. I trust Auri.

Will having a relatively abundant source of paper be unbalanced?
Eh, maybe? I guess they do require killing animals which might be difficult if you're just starting out. Plus, the heaviest pelts typically belong to the strongest animals - Bears and Werewolves for example. Wolf and Goat pelts only make 5 parchment a piece. Deer are relatively easy to kill, and have heavier pelts, but they're also not too common in Winterhold where I imagine most mage characters are going to be based.

Isn't this description a little wordy for a mod so small and simple?
Yeah.

I'm adding this link here again, just to make sure I have all my bases covered on Spell Research's permissions. https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/20983
