Let's put it that way - it was implemented for my gameplay then (on AE Engine 1.6~). As far as I remember - on vanilla SE Engine 1.5~ my followers haven't caught a disease.
What's huh? LoL ...but yes - your follower can catch a disease if not 100% resistant... ...for instance - let your follower fight with a bear often ends with Bone Break Fever of the survival form (FExxx830) which is getting worse with time... ...and yes - it affects the stats - stamina is drained... ...and yes - you can let your follower use a shrine in one of your hearth fire houses (if built) and it may or may not work... ...same with potion may or may not work... ...most efficient way - remove the disease spell with console command... ...in the end my mod does the same, but in an immersive way - by using a potion for the show - and removing the spell in the background.
According to the UESP Wiki "Followers are not affected by diseases." See the 'Notes' section of "https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Followers". Did they change this in a later patch? In Fallout 4 they are affected, e.g. from radiation effects. But I thought they were immune in Skyrim...
This version works for Teammates. I know that certain dogs are recognized as a Teammate (e.g. Meeko). If a Horse is recognized as Teammate then probably.

So they can get them but they don't actually affect their stats?

i guess as more than one follower is mostly op anyways, it comes as a handy handicap...
"huh" as in I never thought of this problem before.
Which in hindsight is most mods lol.
Good work!
