ported over from Fallout 4 due to many requests - with the Creation Club arriving to Skyrim SE soon it is very likely that SSE will also receive new game updates quite frequently in the near future much like Fallout 4 did.

    DISCLAIMER
yes, I know there's a way to use Steam in offline mode.
yes, I know it's possible to turn off auto-update.
yes, I know that you can backup your exe files manually.

yet there are always users who forgot to do any of those. (sometimes me included.) this mod is for them.

and yes, I know that new updates usually change more than just SkyrimSE.exe. this tool is not about rolling back entirely. it's about having an exe SKSE64 might still work with.
if you have a problem with that just keep in mind that it's impossible to forsee what a new update will change and since I'm obviously not making a tool that backs up your whole game library during runtime, having this tool around, and being sure at least your exe is safe is a cup half empty/full situation I believe.

Hey, I just installed this according to the GAmerpoets video and for me I am not getting a folder of the backups created. I don't think the mod is working. I'm currently playing on the Anniversary Edition with the 1.6.353 update. I have definitely loaded the game through the SKSE loader and I've even opened a new game and started playing just to test. Still no backup folder was created. :(

yeah doesn't work just tested, best make manual backups it's actually easier than messing with this all it does is make backups of the game's .exe it is not even worth messing with this tbh

I don't think it is working for v1.6.  I ended up making manual backups.

thanks , will do the same,.
I use about 25 dll plugins, and as of this date only two have no ae version.  This is one of them.  Will need to drop it, ae becoming a must.  i cannot steam play skyrim remotely without ae version.

I have the same problem that some users reported, cant find the "auto_backup_executable" folder under my game folder "...\common\Skyrim special edition\"

And I think that I found the problem.

Im using Mod Organicer 2.4.2 BUT with a Portable instance, not a Global instance, that means that the files are not really stored in the game folder, you can see the real path and the virtual path if you go to Data tab in the mod Manager and put the mouse over the .DLL the file exist in the \data\skse\plugins\ folder BUT ONLY in the virtual path (That points to another real folder in your disk with another structure).
And the problem is that the Auto-backup cant create the folder in the ...\data\auto_backup_executable\ Becuse in fact this folder structure not exist in the hard drive.

Maybe if the mod create the "auto_backup_executable" in another folder (or gives you the choice to select the folder) for example will work but Im not sure.

I also try to copy the DLL with the correct structure to the real installation folder and run directly the skse64_loader but it doesnt work (probably becuse I load the scripts from a zip file in the Mod manager (instead of copy the SKE scripts folder to the game installation folder) and i dont have the full SKE installation in my game folder.

If someone want to test it if you install Skyrim Script Extender 64-bit (SKSE64) and then SkyrimSE.exe Auto-Backup in your real game folder and run the skse64_loader surely will work.
But as i prefere to keep my scripts folder in the MOD manager I have no other option than backup manually.

    Hope it helps.

There really aren't any "portable" instances anymore, MO2 removed that a while ago. The reason autobackup doesn't work with current versions of Skyrim SE is that the plugin loader of SKSE changed; Autobackup will need to be updated to work with post-AE releases.

Steam installed the "Anniversary Edition" update on my PC; I replaced the new SkyrimSE.exe with the version saved as a backup, and it didn't work. I solved the problem by replacing all the files that were modified, including the ones in the Data folder. I recommend having a backup of the entire SSE folder.

This is not a full backup, only the Exe will be backuped. Unfortunately the 5 esm files are dependent on the executable on this update.
Consequently you will need to manually restore your cleaned esm files. SSEEdit creates backups of your original ESM files as well.
I have read that people put the cleaned esm files into an archive file and install them like a mod - looks like an easy way to use an SE or AE Skyrim regarding these files.
There are more files "updated" (Skyrim Textures, Sounds etc.).

Apparently this game is indeed getting an update to "Anniversary Edition" and I found this mod through steams front page of special edition. I'd rather play SE over LE cus it fixes all the crashes I've constantly been getting in oldrim. Thanks for making this mod; hopefully it will save us from the anniversary edition update.

I just found out that Creation Club is expected to be updated very soon and it put me in a panic since I'm very new to modding. This was suggested to make the backup process nice and simple. It works perfectly! I downloaded the mod manually, placed the folder in my Skyrim SE Data folder then [very important step] I launched skse64_loader.exe. and it created the backup immediately after. Thanks so much for this mod!

If you've done everything correctly by putting the folder into your Skyrim data folder, as soon as you launch SKSE64 a backup will be automatically created

Hey, thanks so much for the mod. I've been doing this manually for a while and it's annoying. Why is it set only download manually though? It's setup in a way that I can verify accurately puts the plugin in the skse folder when installing through vortex.

I wonder the same. I can also confirm to others using Vortex that dropping the .rar file into the Mods section of Vortex put the auto_backup_executable.dll file into the correct spot in Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition\Data\SKSE\Plugins

    i'm using mo2.
I read the description. I put the folder in my sse data folder, ran the game, shut down, no backup.
I tried adding it to mo2 like a mod, no backup.
    does it work with mo2?

Make sure you are starting the game through "skse64_loader.exe" and not "SkyrimSE.exe"
