Old Holds is a mod series designed to give more character and distinction to the Holds of The Pale, Winterhold, Eastmarch and The Rift, collectively known as the Old Holds. Inspired mainly by the previous conceptions of Skyrim and the Nords, the series aims to bring noticeable aesthetic, cultural, political and religious differences and make the region stand out from the more Imperialised Western Holds.

Old Holds - Return of the Skalds
Which of the Holds of Skyrim would you say are the most depressing or grim? I'd bet that you say the Holds of Dawnstar and Winterhold especially. The fact that there are no bards to be found in those Holds might be a factor! This mod adds a bard, (here stylised as a Skald) to the inns of Dawnstar, Winterhold, Nightgate, Kynesgrove and Riften. What is the difference between a bard and a skald? Out of game, quite a bit, but in-game not so much. In my headcanon, the Skalds are more traditional, tellers of tales such as the Songs of Return and the great epics of Nord history, whereas bards are closer to entertainers, with songs like Ragnar the Red and bawdy poems to delight. The Skalds added here are more hardcore than your average "milkdrinker" bard: clad in light armour, painted in war paint, and as comfortable on the battlefield as beside the fire of an inn. They are devotees of the goddess Dibella in her role as patron of artists. In line with the theme of the series, the bards are more appreciated in high society and in the Imperialised West while the old songs and tales still claim the hearts of the East.
