Hey man, thoses textures lack mipmaps, it induces shimmering and reduce performances. It's standard practice to include mipmaps for games, it saves VRAM a lot and decrease bandwith usage. lack of mipmap would induce stutter and makes crazy shimmering.

Btw, outside of this problem, this set of texture looks quite good, and the LOD is a big plus, thank you!

a texture shown at long range do not need a full "size", it's reduced, shrinked. Depending of the distance, the game will vary the size of the texture.
By doing this, it saves memory and increase graphic fidelity . It's a required procedure in modern games. This technique is called Mipmap

      From wikipedia

"Mmipmaps are pre-calculated, optimized sequences of images, each of which is a progressively lower resolution representation of the same image. The height and width of each image, or level, in the mipmap is a power of two smaller than the previous level. Mipmaps do not have to be square. They are intended to increase rendering speed and reduce aliasing artifacts."

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mipmap

.DDS file format have the ability to include pre - reduced textures, with the right tools. Free programs allow this just fine. Gimps have plugins for this, and paint.net do it natively for the common DDS DXT1/5, but wont do it for uncompressed (yet it's doable too with plugins).

It's preferable to make the mipmap from the original uncompressed source when converting to DDS, because to resave a .dds file can reduce the quality, it may recompress the file once again.

Btw it's a very simple process, it only requires a box checked in paint.net to generate thoses when saving a file.

I have resaved yours files with mipmaps for my personal use, it took me 5 mins.

The only downside is the 30% size increase. (but it worths it, otherwise it wouldnt be standart ;p)

I'm astonished nobody noticed this problem before. Because it really makes the texture "dance" on the wall of the winterhold college:)

Is there a quick and easy way to check and see if a DDS has mipmaps?

Could you upload the mipmaps for this mod as a separate mod, or perhaps a bit of collaboration with ClstlDrmr83? This actually does need mipmaps. Thank you.

Yes there is a way, indiana, the size for the .dds file. for a square and 1/2/4K textures it's easy.

mipmaps take 33% of the size of a .dds

      a 1024*1024 dxt5 file with mipmap is 1.3 Mb
if the files have thoses sizes:0.68 or 1.3 or 2.7 or 5.4 or 10.8 or 21.7 MB or close to thoses numbers, they have mipmaps. (i have rounded the value randomly)

If they have round numbers, like 0.5/1/2/4/8/16, they dont have mipmap

This easy trick works with squares, for rectangle shaped textures and unconventional resolutions, it wont help much.

i, i wont upload the files but i will explain properly how to fix the mipmap for this mod and also for all textures mods if you find other broken textures with lacking mipmaps!

      0 download paint.net

      1 decompress the archive somewhere

2 open texture from winterhold chantry archive with paint.net

3 select "save as", choose dxt1 or dxt5 and check generate mipmap (best mode for mipmaps should be checked by default, fantz/supersample), do not forget to choose the right path. Overwrite the old texture in the original folder.

4 repeat the process for all the textures from the original archive

5 install the mod normally with the finished textures.

      6 profit!

When to choose dxt1 or dxt5:

some textures require transparent data, but it takes more memory. So you could use dxt5 all the time, it will be heavier, that's all.

However when the texture does not have transparent data ( it's easily viewable in paint.net, you see the squares under the texture if there is transparency), you can save it with dxt1 compression, it halves the size.

A visual guide here at the end of this video, (you can skip 90% of it)
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1BqgohmaCY

Dont forget to tick the generate mipmap box

I wish you a good luck, once you get the workflow it's very fast, 5 mins to do it, 20 mins to learn/install paint.net and watch the video .

What about grass? Is DXT5 good for grass or should it use DXT7 for grass?

These are my favorite textures-- but for some reason I get INSANE LOD texture flickering.

It stops if I disable LOD using TLL. For some reason the game seems to be loading the regular textures AND the LOD when I'm up close enough that LOD isn't needed.

Doesn't stop if I disable the LOD textures and just use DYNDOlod. Really perplexed!

edit: I was letting texgen overwrite one silly file! WOW. These textures remain amazing. Hopefully someone chooses to do a parallax patch because these are #1.

    Hi, Great Textures.
For anyone struggling with Ultimate College of Winterhold and the main floor being transparent from underneath. The Mipmap version of this mod Shiva182  linked in the posts below fixes that issue.
    Have Fun.

I know a bit about modding, but not really textures. How difficult would it be to make the college doors and dawnguard doors use different textures? I love the doors of this mod, but don't want them on the fort, but I want it both ways.

    Edit
Guys just read the description for this fort dawnguard texture, it gives the fort unique door textures! Not optimal to have to use a specific fort dawnguard texture pack I know, but if anyone else really wants to have it both ways here it is!

Is this mod by any chance compatible with Obscure's College of Winterhold?

Hi folks, does anyone know if there is already a mod out there that disjoins the Fort Dawnguard doors from the College ones? I like the glass doors, but I'd like to retain the vanilla doors for Fort Dawnguard.

This is absolutely beautiful. It's not caused by your mod but do you have any idea why the snow shading on flat surfaces (like the college curb, boardwalks, etc.) look like this?

    https://m.imgur.com/a/vfUxtDb

It's got an ugly gray concrete appearance instead of looking like proper snow like the snowy landscapes do and it's making me crazy because it's so distracting. Any suggestions?

I apologize for my delayed response. I've been away from the Nexus and Skyrim for quite sometime.
I'm sorry I don't what's causing your grey snow. My modding knowledge is next to nothing beyond swapping textures around, and even that is iffy at times. My best guess is it's a snow shader issue with a custom snow texture?
I hope you found a fix.
