Trying to use this with Bellyaches Creature Retexture Pack but with both mods enabled the whiterun horses look like shadowmere(not the glowing eyes and saddles but they are all black with the handprint on them) The conflicting files are horsemanetail.dds, horse01_n.dds, and horse04.dds. How can I make them look different?
I know this comment is a bit old but I found a way to make those textures apply only to Shadowmere :
First, download manually this mod and unzip it on your desktop. You should have a textures and a meshes folder.
Then create a folder inside the textures folder and name it something easy to remember like Improved Shadowmere, and move all the files from textures/actors/horse into this new folder (except saddleshadowmere.dds, leave this one as it is). This way, the textures from this mod won't overwrite the default horse textures (or the textures from other mods such as Bellyaches').
Now open shadowmere.nif (in the meshes folder) in nifskope and change all the textures paths to use the one of the Improved shadowmere folder then save it. Your folder structure should look something like this :
Shadower, I'm about 3 years late, but I just discovered this mod. A quick google search explained an easy way to find and edit the texture paths in NifSkope. If you haven't found out how to do it yet (or if anyone else does not know how) keep reading...
After opening the file shadowmere.nif in NifSkope: - At the top of the NifSkope window, left click on “View”, go down to “Block List”, select: Show Blocks in List (I found sorting this way makes it easier to find what you are looking for) - In the “Block List” window (the left-side) scroll down until you findanything with “TextureSet” in its name (ex: BSShaderTextureSet), and left click on it - The “Block Details” window (the window immediately below) shows the texture paths (they have a purple flower icon) - Double click on the file path to edit it. - Repeat this process until you have changed all the textures paths to the Improved Shadowmere folder you created - At the top, of the NifSkope window, left click on File, and save
Four years after, but I hope I get a response. I followed these instructions and he looks fine in Nifskope, but in-game his eyes are solid black instead of glowing red. They glow red in the Nif preview when I open it.
If you scroll through the posts, you can see people commenting on the Whiterun horses also being affected. That can break immersion. In my case, I also use HD Horses Reworked (https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/28249) and, while I can unpack it to remove the Shadowmere textures, I can't mess individually with Whiterun horse textures. This causes a conflict and means I have to avoid using this mod. Which really sucks, because I like this mod. (Yes, I could just use this one and ignore the other vanilla horses, but TBH that bugs me more than just using a different Shadowmere mod.)
Edit: I could also use the .nif edits listed in the comments below, but I do not have confidence to do so and prefer to avoid messing with files outside of "delete this clearly and obviously named thing within your files explorer, ta-da".
I noticed this too. The black horses from you can buy from Whiterun Stable also have the Black Hand mark on their haunch. I don't, personally, have a problem with it, but I suspect it wasn't intended to do this. For those who don't want to see the mark, if they have the Convenient Horses mod, most barding will cover it up.
Thank you so much for this mod. I always found it stupid that such an iconic horse would look just like the one from the Whiterun stables (obviously the red eyes and saddle being different). Shadowmere looks so much better and feels more true to the Dark Brotherhood. Keep up the good work! :)

The first addition to this series is available here:
Archet's Dark Brotherhood - Shrouded Armor Set

There is a non-branded version available as well.
Anyway, thanks again. Cheers!

Meshes folder :
meshes/actors/horse/character assets/shadowmere.nif
Repack it and install it normally. Now Shadowmere will be the only one to use those textures and the other horses won't be affected.
