Since this is such a common question, no I'm not porting the equivalent LE mod because frankly I like this version better and the old one has a bug I was never able to fix that this one doesn't.
Update:
Apparently Mardoxx gave permission to port the old LE mod. (He was the original creator of Always Pick Up Books which I modified to become the LE version of Sometimes Pick Up Books.) So if you can live with the limitations and bugs, you can find it here.
I gotta say, I'm glad I found this mod! It was rather annoying having to reeaad eeeevery booook just to pick it up. This really comes in handy when playing the way I do, which is akin to the first time I played the game. I collect everything. Ingredients, potions, books, crafting materials, etc. Also, I love the little jumping animation the books do when I take them. It's so cute! It's like they're excited.
Then more than one person has the issue, because I've noticed it after firing up Skyrim AE as well. I get where you're coming from as far as this not altering anything supposedly, but after checking it with LOOT and making sure it wasn't a load order issue, this just seemed to stop working.
EDIT: This mod, https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/2453?tab=files, is fine however, and requires SKSE. Doesn't make sense, but it works. I'm dropping this mod for that one.
Just because more than one person shares a problem doesn't mean it is the mod. I use my own mods and have the updated game. It still works the same way it always did. Whatever is happening is not universal, but if another mod works better with your game then great.
it works, more of less.. some areas totally not, others it works like it supposed to... before the update all areas.. no extra mods.. no different lay out.. so it has to be your mod, that is causing it..least to some degree..
That's extremely vague but more than you gave in the original post. Originally you said it doesn't work. Now you're saying it works in some locations but not others.
I haven't found any places where it doesn't work and can't think of any reason at all for it to be location dependent based on the AE update itself. This mod is just a Perk applied to the player that triggers a script when you activate a book. But there are conditions that get checked to decide what to do with the book. Since AE includes all of the Creation Club content your problem could be caused by some change being made to locations by one or more of those.
Can you give a specific location and/or a specific book where it is not working? And describe what it is doing instead of what it should be?
Ok it was my mistake, only after carefully going over the files, I realised that you must have your hands in "active" modus at all times if you just want to pick up books.. for this mod to work.. when you don't (because it isn't needed) then you read them...
This mod doesnt require skse meaning it doesnt have an MCM right? I swear to god i was using a mod for SE quite recently that gave me an MCM with an option to set a key. Instead of having your hands drawn or down, you would hold that key to read a book instead of picking it up instantly. The first time i tried installing this today it didnt work but i messed with my load order and now it does. But i swear i was using this mod and it had an mcm. Unless skyrim just glitched and its mcm didnt show up. Is there another mod like this (not pick up books simple, its not that) for SE that has an mcm and key? I think im losing my mind
It's possible (as described in the sticky post) to port the matching mod created for the original game to SE. I haven't done it officially because I prefer this version. It makes sense to me that if you have a weapon drawn or are ready to cast a spell you wouldn't want to read a book and if you're where you want to read a book you wouldn't be ready for combat. I think that's better than a magic key combination sequence. The only thing I miss from the original mod is the dynamically changing prompt but that's the part of the old mod that had the bug.
Is this safe to use on a old game? I'm asking because I've searched for mods like this today and all the other similar ones requires a new game (which I'm not prepared to do just yet).
So does this mod fully work then? As well as that, can you make this mod have the other features that require SKSE to have in an optional file download as those features will add more things as well as customisation?
It works, but there's a slight issue. Before I installed this mod and after when I have my hands down, I can Read and Take and its not considered stealing. I put my hands up, it won't let me Take and gives fail sound. I sneak, not hidden though, and Take and the people immediately get hostile. Like I said, not huge issue, can just wait until they're not looking or just read. But is annoying since your mod says you should be able to pick up if not considered stealing.

Endorsed!
