About this mod

A configuration preset for Durability VR by Shizof. Inspired by Wolfman's and bongodoctor's Reverse settings files.
My own attempt at making degredation immersive and unobtrusive while keeping it relevant.

Because I barely ever engaged in Smithing in Skyrim I decided to install Shizof's Durability VR and it made me actually bother tempering items. After installing Open World Loot I went ahead and made my own config based on the small balance changes from WAAT to equipment progression in the "Reverse settings" style.

This mod is designed with the weapon changes from Weapon Armor Attribute Tweaks in mind. The lite version of that mod includes the changes accounted for.

I also tried to make armor degradation feel immersive and unobtrusive without making it irrelevant. It's meant to enhance your playstyle and encourage interaction with Smithing rather than making any drastic adaptation necessary.

Degradation Changes and Philosophy:

  • Flimsy looking equipment such as Forsworn Armor degrades faster
  • Light armor degrades slightly faster than equal-tier heavy armor
  • Armor Degradation is spread more evenly to make glove/boots/helmet maintenance more relevant
  • Untempered items degrade relatively slowly as to not annoy you by breaking quickly
  • Tempers degrade slightly faster to encourage maintenance
  • Enchanted Items break more slowly
  • High tier gear is significantly more durable than weaker equipment
  • NPCs and Followers aren't affected by item degradation

These changes are intended to facilitate a gameplay loop where you can stick with your favourite equipment, but need to temper it regularly to keep it effective and from eventually breaking. Smithing XP is essentially gained faster when you don't craft or upgrade unused items. If you do forget to temper and check your durabilities for a while, it won't very quickly break on you but you still need to pay some attention to maintenance.

I hope you enjoy!
