ISTAR PEAK QUEST

MAIN QUEST

The main quest introduces an unsuspecting previous owner of Breezehome which will guide the player in a quest to free an area from some villains.
In time, the player may discover new items, new spells and new hidden areas.
The player may also gain a new, very comfortable, home.

TO BEGIN THE QUEST

1- When you start the module the first time, an installation message is displayed, and you are given the Istar Peak Module Player's Handbook (another version of this README).

2- To begin the quest, you must achieve level 42 and be owner of Breeezehome.  When you enter Breezehome, an actor will appear.

3- It is recommanded that you start the quest after having acquired a maximum of houses in other cities.(Markarth, Riften, Solitude, Windhelm). If you do, then if there is an update to the module, you will not have to replay this part.

INSTALLATION

There are three versions of this module. All are the same except for packaging: Same quest and scripts.
You must install ONLY ONE of the Main files:

IstarPeak SSE: Use the main, default version if possible:
  • Skyrim Anniversary Edition version 1.6.1130.0.8 or more. Tested with 1.6.1130.0.8 and 1.6.1170.0.8.
  • Skyrim SE Edition pre-1.6.1130 version Enhanced with SKSE64 and patched with mods like Backported Extended ESL Support.
  • Skyrim VR Enhanced with SKSE64 and patches like Skyrim VR ESL Support.

IstarPeak SEVR: ESP File version forced to 1.70.
  • For vanilla Skyrim SE versions previous to 1.6.1130.
  • For vanilla Skyrim VR. Tested with version 1.4.15.0.

IstarPeak LE: ESP File version forced to 1.70 and NIF Meshes optimized for Skyrim LE.
  • For Legacy Skyrim ONLY. Tested with version 1.9.32.0.

Vortex installation (Recommanded for SE and VR versions)

Installation from Nexus Mods site
- Use the "Download: Vortex" button on the mod main page. This is the simpliest installation.

Manual Vortex Installation
- Essentially, you should use the Install From File option. The file should be kept in the same disk partition as your SKYRIM installation.
If you overwrite a version with a fresh install, the update should work properly.
- This is not the prefered way to install because it does not manage the version of the module.

Manual installation

It's the only procedure I tested for the LE version. You can also use a mod manager if you know better.
Note that the only required files are the contents of the Data folder, under LE or SSE archive, depending of your version of Skyrim: .esp and .bsa files.
In a pure manual installation, just extract these 2 files to the Data folder of Skyrim
(For exemple: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Skyrim\Data):
  YROIstarPeak.esp
  YROIstarPeak.bsa

In LE Version, you can then select IstarPeak.esp in the "Data Files" Menu when launching SKYRIM.

UPDATING

Updating from 1.03 to 1.04:
  • Simply install the new version the same way you installed the previous one.
  • When you load a game saved with previous version, an update message will be displayed.
  • The System - Help menu will also show the new version under Istar Peak - About.
  • The Istar Peak Module Player's Handbook will also be updated - whatever you've done with it... You do not get a new book on an update.
  • Updating is "save-game safe" as long as you do not save a game between removal of the old version and installation of the new one.

Changing Main File Type:
  • You may want to change from SEVR version to SSE version if you install SKSE and enhancements. This should work and be "save-game safe" as long as you do not save a game between removal of SEVR mod and installation of SSE mod.
  • Changing from SSE to SEVR is not recommanded unless SSE version simply doesn't work. If you do it because you removed SKSE and Enhancements, you should go back to a pre-SKSE saved-game.
  • Changing from or to LE version is never done because it's not the same Skyrim Installation.

NEW RACES TO PLAY

The new races are experimental: things may not always work properly with them. For example, the vampire quests may fail because I did not defined the vampire versions of these races.

Hosnies:
  • Be warned that some areas are not accessible to Hosnies as they cannot jump as high as normal-sized races. They also run slower.
  • I recommand you play with reduced size at least once, just for the fun of seeing the world from an Hosnie point of view. Hosnies do not get the penalties for being shrinked by a spell, since their size is natural.
Blue Elves:
  • You may also try a Blue Elf, but be warned that the race was designed for NPCs and is not recommanded for playing characters.
  • Females are taller than males and, yes, they do run faster and jump higher.
WHAT HAS BEEN CHANGED

Istar Peak is a big module. I tried hard not to mess with any existing stuff. All new artefacts names are prefixed YRO to avoid namespace clashes with other Mods. I also used TES5EDIT to clean it. The module is designed to be moddable, and is declared as a Master.

Main Map:
  • Added Istar Peak entrance, Istar Peak Pass entrance and a tower in some unused space in the mountains between Whiterun and Riverwood. A dungeon is added near Riverwood. Finally, the cell (3,0) near Whiterun has been modded.
Changed Areas:
  • All (basic) player houses have been changed to add features for the main quest. Care has been taken for these changes to work in all decoration options,   but was tested only with full decoration. Added stuff is in expanded areas, so it should not interfere too much. There is a risk of incompabilities with other Mods that change the layouts, for exemple to add furniture.
  • Note that the infamous Breezehome Heartfire CTD bug has been taken care of, so both the LE and SSE versions should work.
New Areas:
  • Istar Peak is a new World - a village in the mountains.
  • There are also 20 new areas to discover.
New Races: Blue Elves and Hosnies.

New Features:
  • Female mannequins.
  • Runes (a new way of enchanting items).
  • Mechanisms, secret doors...
  • Paintings
  • Flying boats
  • and more...
New Quests:
  • One main Quest (31 visible objectives)
  • 4 playable secondaries
  • 3 for features support.
New Art:
  • Runes and modified versions of Noctural's Outfit and Ebony Mail.
  • Paintings: some based on modified personal pictures, others on old public-domain, known paintings.
  • Also, I integrated Better Circlets Mod to have both basic and enhanced versions simultaneously, and to fix a collision layer issue.
New Dialogs: About 100 dialogs with lip animations. Simulation is not as good as voice acting, but is better than nothing...

New Enchantments: 3 normal enchantments and 4 Innissian Runes.

New Items: 170 new items, most usable by the player.

New Scripts: 148 new Papyrus scripts.

New Spells: 17 new spells available for the player: you will discover them in-game.

HINTS
  • Encounters: Some encounters are not levelled, but the recommanded player level of 42 should be enough.
  • Puzzles: Setting correct hints is difficult as every individual plays his/her game differently and puzzles solutions are always trivial when found.
  • Secret doors: Some are hard to find. For each, there is always a mechanism to open it, visible in most cases...
  • Hidden areas and goodies: There is a lot to explore in Istar Peak: don't be afraid to climb, swim or - even - shout!
  • Clues in foreign language: You may find some texts not written in English. Don't be afraid if you don't understand: you miss no clues for the quests.
  • Final combat: May be hard... Use thief abilities and, as with all dragon combats: "Keep a low profile and try not to look like food".

EXPERIMENTAL SPELLS

Experimental spells allow you to do silly things with your game and maybe break some quests. It is not a bug, but a limitation. You are warned when you acquire these spells. These are quite safe and fun if you follow the advices given by your mentors in-game.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Papyrus version must be 1.6 or more, which is different than Skyrim version. You DO NOT need to install SKSE.
Will work with most decently recent versions of Skyrim.

Known to work in these setups:
  • Skyrim Anniversary Edition 1.6.1130.0.8 and 1.6.1170.0.8 with "Istar Peak SSE" package. Steam installation.
  • Skyrim VR (vanilla) Edition 1.4.15.0 with "Istar Peak SEVR" package (version 1.04 required). Steam installation.
  • Skyrim LE V1.9.32.0 with "Istar Peak LE" package. Steam installation.

I have modded and tested with 6 GB memory and a (venerable) 1 GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M Graphic Card.
In this configuration, I could run both Creation Kit and Skyrim LE simultaneously, but this configuration is truly minimal and Windows is becoming somewhat fatter and slower with time.

For SE version, I modded the Skyrim Anniversary Edition with a more decent machine:
ROG Strix, AMD Ryzen 7 5800X CPU 16 GB, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 10 GB.
All tests were done with Steam-installed versions of SKYRIM.

KNOWN ISSUES

  • See POSTS, FORUM, and BUGS.
UNREACHABLE AREAS

These two areas are visible to the player but not available for now:
  • Programmer's Lab. It's where I test things before making them available. Not an interesting area. I'm open for any other proposition for that building (see Nexus Blog). Some of the tests there may crash the game.
  • Edhelluin's Quarters: Should be the most beautiful layout of the module, but it is not finished and I have not decided on which conditions it will be accessible.
