About this mod

An overhaul of the effects of most cooked foods in the game. The overall focus here is for food to provide small buffs to stats and combat skills for an extended duration. This should hopefully maintain some degree of usefulness and incentive to cook or buy food, which is quickly outclassed by even minor healing potions early on in the game.

Changelogs
Most food is next to useless in the base game. Unless one plays on survival mode, in which case cooking is essentially turned into a chore one must do to avoid death. Which I suppose is one way of incentivizing cooking. However, I'm personally not a fan of survival mechanics in fantasy games, and as someone who opts not to play on survival mode I wanted to take a different approach to make food and cooking useful. So how does this mod do that?

The idea is that eating food before a battle, or delving into a dungeon, should provide minor buffs to stats and combat skills to simulate your character being stronger from being well fed. These buffs will not be as large as what potions provide, but they will last much longer-
30 real time minutes in most cases. My goal here being that food shouldn't encroach too heavily on alchemy, and each fills their own niche. Potions give a bigger boost, but for a much shorter time, and food gives a smaller boost but for much longer. All of my food effects stack with potions, so they can be used in combination with one another.

As the focus of this mod is on cooked foods, I haven't modified any raw meats or vegetables in any way. So things like carrots and raw beef will still just restore their 1 point of health or whatever. I'll list every food item I have modified below, and exactly what their new effects are. I have also added a few new custom recipes with some unique effects.

All of these effects
DO stack with each other, unless one consumes a food item of the same name. In which case it just resets the timer for that particular item. So eating different types of food together will result in stronger overall buffs.

Other Items with Slight Modifications:
Spoiler:
Show

  • Elsewyr Fondue - left the effects as is, but increased the duration to 30 minutes to bring them in-line with the rest of my foods. So it's better now, but I feel the ingredients are rare enough to justify this.
  • Garlic Bread - left as is. A disease-curing food item is good enough on its own, but I did slightly increase the value.
  • Home Cooked Meal - increased the duration to 30 minutes, but brought down the magnitude of all 3 regen effects slightly to 20% to balance it a bit.
  • Argonian Bloodwine - I know its technically a drink, but I've always loved the effects on it. I left them as is, but increased the duration of all effects to 10 minutes so its actually useful. I also doubled the value. Since it's a drink, it wears off a bit faster than food, hence the reasoning for 10 minutes.

Requirements:
Just the base game and the DLC's

Notes:
- If the item is not listed above I have not modified it in any way. This includes the Creation Kit fish dishes, as I personally don't use them.

- I have slightly increased the values of these food items as well, which I feel corresponds to them now having better effects. Nothing too wild, but just be aware of this if you play with something like Trade and Barter. (I do)

- Yes, I have removed the ability to constantly spam power attacks with beef stew/vegetable soup. I'm striving for balance in this mod, and I always felt that ability was too cheesy and overpowered for my tastes. But if you're the type that likes to spam infinite power attacks with nothing but beef stew in your inventory, then you likely aren't looking for a mod like this anyway. Just keep cooking those and don't download this.

- For some reason I haven't been able to get the animation working for the cloak effects on my custom recipes. However, the damage effect still functions perfectly as it should. I might try to fix it, but honestly the animation can be distracting anyway so I may just leave it. I dunno.

Survival Mode:
As noted above, I personally don't play on survival mode. However, I have uploaded an ESL-flagged patch that carries over the hunger restore effects for those that do. Load after the main file.

USSEP:
I have also uploaded an ESL-flagged USSEP patch that carries over a few keyword changes and survival mode effects. Load after the main file.
