About this image

So I got Cupscale and ESRGAN set up... I already used it to upscale a few Oldrim textures and decided to see how it handled screenshots.

It definitely makes shadow/AO dithering issues conspicuous... I lucked out on this one.

Original for comparison

So it supersampled the image and applied an oilify filter?
It looks nice, but it doesn't look better on its own merits, necessarily. The original has more compression artifacts, but more surface texture detail that is lost when this kind of processing is done. The green cloth is severely affected. It looks like a completely different material.

Try changing your screenshot format to .bmp or .png, and run one of those through this processing, instead. I'd say this one looks better inasmuch as it is much sharper and less compressed. The extra image resolution helps, but again, try changing your screenshot format. BMP and PNG images will look much better as a starting point, particularly in smaller areas of high texture resolution, such as the character's face, the jewelry, and the staff.

It was run through an AI upscaler. Hence the mention of ESRGAN.

Yes, I know. I meant that your original screenshot has a ton of compression artifacts,. You potentially could get an even better result with the upscaling by starting with a higher quality image format as a base.

For setup or configuration? There's a lot of prerequisites to install to get an ESRGAN setup working. I used this as a guide and googled around when I ran into snags. I have used this to peruse various ESRGAN models to load up to run. I'm just starting to dabble with it. Sometimes you may need to do a bit of touch-up beforehand if it does something conspicuous, like with a spot that had some transparency dithering issues in one of my previous tries.
