If the dragon were smart, he'd recognize that the aspect of a mountain immediately adjacent to an open, grassy plain, would experience significant updraft if said plain had been exposed to the sun for a good majority of the day.
Maybe the dragon is smart and compensated for the updraft...
1) Two separate shouts, or
2) An effect of the tear in the fabric of time.
