Skyrim Special Edition

Frequently Asked Questions.

Q:Why Sorting Mods?
A: Let's  face it, Skyrim is a very 'stuff' oriented game. There are literally of thousands of collectible items, from ordinary clutter, to elaborate weapons and artifacts of all kinds. But, there is a problem. Many of them, are either poorly described, that is to say, the name doesn't really capture what the item is as well as it could, OR, the item is well described, but is poorly formatted in some way that is only obvious once you have it in your inventory with other items. This is a common feature of ALL Bethesda games. Not just Skyrim. Fallout suffers from it as well. Fallout 4s inventory management for example, and naming is so bad, the game is almost unplayable without extensive reworks of the way the games items are named. And its not just strictly the names, even items that players might want easy and frequent access to, are often buried in some random spot in your inventory, usually in the middle or bottom where you have to root around for it.  Bethesda doesn't consider a lot of factors when it creates its games, and inventory management is (another) one of them.
Even simple things, like special formatting for quest items for example, is completely absent from Bethesda games. A lot of these shortcomings, can be rectified with simple manipulation of text and spacing and other tricks, which goes a long way to make the management of all that 'stuff' you collect, a lot simpler and cleaner looking in your lists. Skyrim's UI is legendary for how poor it is, but even after you bring in SkyUI, the underlying problem still persists. Thus, naming mods.

Q: How does ASM-20x coverage compare to the original ASM?
A: Aside from a enormous amount of updating and format overhauls to the original mod, ASM-20x sorts more records. Over 5x more records than ASM-2013. As of 2020, over 7k items are renamed for clairiy and organization
While ASM-20x core framework is derived from the original ASM-2013, ASM-20x is its own, standalone mod,  and has evolved substantially in scope and scale, from its original form, with new ESPs and totally rebuilt and or new compatibility files.

Q: Does ASM-20x only change names?
A: No, despite its name, ASM-20x covers more than just names. Weight and Base Costs have also been modified in some instances. This is reflected in its broad compatibility with WaCCF. Other edits are done to correct inconsistencies in records USLEEP has not, or won't fix, ie potion pricing errors, or shield attributes to name a few. Some weights have been adjusted to be more realistic on certain items. Scrolls are now weigh .1, rather than vanillas .5. The majority of records are straight renames, however, many items stats have been tweaked for immersion, realism, or to address bugs and or bad game design.
New: Magic effects texts, including some perks and even a few load screens, have been substantially improved and streamlined.

Q: Is ammo strength changed in ASM-20x?
A: No, ASM-20x SSE uses vanilla values. For WaCCF, ammo, install the compatibility file provided.

Q: What is the {P} that appears on some items for?
A: Items tagged with a {P} indicate permanent\persistent items. They will remain persistent in the world unless sold to a vendor.
Items known to posses this hidden permanency flag, have this tag.

Q: Most items are sorted, but I find the odd one(s) that are not. Is ASM broken?
A: No, you have a conflicting mod (or bash patch is not up-to-date), or a load order issue, that is overwriting the entries in question.
If you use an ASM supported mod, be sure to install the compatibility file for it.
See Load order matters!

Q: Any plans for a weightless, or reduced weight version?
A: No. ASM-20x is a singular solution with a heavy emphasis on realism and immersion.
This is why it has been made compatible with Clothing and Clutter fixes.
Making heavy and bulky items, ie ingots, pelts, Dwemer scrap etc, weigh little or nothing in world is not a goal of ASM-20x

ASM-20x also addresses and number of potion pricing and weight issues present in vanilla, that neither USSEP or WaCCF address.
ASM uses the pricing structure from the Alchemy Potions and Food Adjustments mod (v2.1+).
Like ASM, its pricing overhaul fixes potion pricing errors, but also improves pricing substantially. A full replacement ESP is available. The pricing structure is in part, meant to reduce rampant money-trees that occur due to vanillas poor pricing schemes.

Ruined books weight makes little sense either.

Vanilla says a ruined, tattered and burnt book all weigh 2.0 which is twice all other books in game. But it gets better.
A burnt books weight, according to Bethesda anyhow, remains constant when its burnt (not it would not!).
ASM corrects the weight and price, of all 3 ruined books so they scale according to their condition in a logical way.

For yet another example. Bethesda says Gold and Silver have the same weight and mass per unit(ingot), as iron or steel!  An absurd proposition as steel is only 40% the relative density of gold, yet an ingot of gold and steel both weigh exactly the same,  ASM overhauls WaCCF, weights and the ingots now scale according to real world relative densities (where possible), using Gold as the reference point for all others.
