No 'billboards' are supplied by the latest version of this mod (2.2.1). They are with the previous version only to maintain support for DynDOLOD 2.xx, because TexGen in that version cannot create billboards as in DynDOLOD 3.

People often loosely use the term 'billboards' for 3D LOD models, but they are really just textures showing the full tree. These 'billboards' can be displayed by the game via the traditional tree LOD method using the billboard textures and text files with coordinates, OR they can be displayed on 'flat' meshes in object LOD using DynDOLOD 'Ultra' option (these are also called 'billboards', but I think this just causes more confusion).

Billboards are just textures. 'LODs' are 3D models. LOD 'billboards' are flat meshes used to display the texture billboards ... but they are still 3D meshes. These place the textures on flat panels of a very simple '+' mesh with 4-8 triangles, while "3D hybrid LOD models" render the complete crowns of the base models and use billboard meshes only for the trunks (trunk billboards created from 'full' trunk models using 'Render' option in TexGen 3). Either one of these is then placed on the large LOD *.bto meshes which are composite meshes used to present distant object LOD. Mesh rules in DynDOLOD for each LOD4/8/16/32 levels can either be set to "Level0/1/2" or "Billboard/2/3/4/5/6". The former are the 'full' 3D models, and the latter are the LOD 'billboard' 3D models.

"Traditional tree LOD" uses the billboard tree textures without any models at all. Always tick the 'Ultra' box when generating tree LOD for this and other mods like it. Otherwise, you are not getting trees in object LOD at all and you are using the traditional tree LOD system (which is very limited and looks, well ... flat).

Throw away or hide all texture billboards shipping with mods when using DynDOLOD 3 (some mod authors improperly call LOD models 'billboards', so be sure to understand what you are dealing with). They can only cause trouble and issues. Let TexGen create texture tree billboards using the 'tree' and 'HD tree' options (they are always better than those shipping with the mod).

The latest version of this mod has three parts (as in all tree mods supporting DynDOLOD):

  • The main mod providing textures and tree meshes
  • ../meshes/DynDOLOD/lod/trees/. contains the 3D hybrid LOD models with CRC in the file name matching the CRC of full models
  • ../DynDOLOD/Render/Billboards/DynDOLOD/lod/trees/. contains the full trunk meshes with CRC in the file name matching the CRC of full models used by TexGen to render trunks for trunk billboard textures
