Troubleshooting and Common Questions

I figured this article would be a good idea to help with answering any quick questions or issues people may have.

First thing first. If you have not seen so far in one of the many places I have put it, if you are upgrading from a pre 2.0.0 version, you need a new save. A large portion of the mod has changed with this update. I simply cannot offer support for upgrading on the same save, no exceptions.

Before you report any issues, make sure you are not trying to use 2.0.0 on a save that has ever had a pre 2.0.0 version installed. It doesn't matter if you had the mod installed and didn't activate it in the MCM, you still need a new save.

- What do the version numbers mean?? -

As of 2.0.0, SunHelm now uses a modified version of semantic versioning.

2.0.5
^ This number indicates a major overhaul. Changes in this number are NOT save compatible. (ie. going from 1.2.2 to 2.0.0)

2.0.5
^  This number indicates a major update. Changes in this number MIGHT save compatible. I will specify which with the update. (ie. going from 2.0.5 to 2.1.0)

2.0.5
^ This number, and any additional numbers after it, indicates a minor save game compatible update.

-  Can I set a profile to load by default when I start a new save? -

As of v3.0.2, yes. If you create a profile json file at "Data/SunHelm/Config/Default/SunHelm.json" the mod will load this file by default when first initializing the mod.

- If I was using "X" version of SunHelm, can I update to version "Y" on the same save?-

Please refer to the versioning information above. With every update, I do everything I can to ensure it is save game compatible. However, sometimes this can't be avoided.

- Help! I cant refill my waterskins/bottles in bodies of water! -
Please ensure you are using the latest version of powerofthree's papyrus extender found here. Refilling bottles, among other things, will not work without it.

- Does SunHelm affect NPCs? -
No

- My carry weight has been reduced, whats going on? -
SunHelm does decrease your carry weight by 150 points. If you do not like this, or if its clashing with another mod, you can disable this in the MCM menu.

- My warmth ratings aren't showing up/I have UI issues! Whats going on? -

SunHelm includes SkyUI Survival Integration. If these interface files are overwritten by another mod (such as the unofficial Campfire/Frostfall patch), the the warmth ratings are not going to show up in your UI.
Some UI mods include their own version of SkyUI integration, such as Dear Diary. These mods are cases where their files need to overwrite SunHelm.

Are you in VR? If you are, I am sorry to say that the game does not include built in functionality to show warmth ratings like SE does. That is something that will have to be developed by me, and is a pretty grueling and arduous process(that I’m not even sure how to accomplish yet since Ui work is not what I’m good at).

- Food/ Drink from "X" mod isn't restoring hunger or thirst. -

Food and drink from mods wont restore hunger or thirst unless they have either been patched, or have integrated support. Take a look at the bottom of the modpage to see a list of mods with integrated support. Other patches can be found on the linked patch pages as well, or in SunHelm's installer.
I will soon be re adding the feature to categorize unknown foods as well.

- Can you add "X" feature? -

I don't really do feature requests. There are things that I have on my plate that I want to do, but asking for a feature is not likely to make it happen if I wasnt already planning on doing so. This mod is meant to be more streamlined than other needs mods, and I do not want to pile on a ton of excess features.

- X feature isnt working anymore, whats going on? -

Try giving the mod a restart, that usually fixes any issues. If it doesn't help, report your issue on either the bug reports tab, and I will try to take a look. Try to include as much info as possible. The more the better. Give the information whether you think its irrelevant or not, it might be important. Try to include info like:

  • Load order
  • What you were doing in game when your issue occurred?
  • What version of the mod are you using?
  • Are you on a save where you updated the mod from a previous version?, etc.

Alternatively/additionally, it may be a good idea to ask about it in the discord, and other users that may have experienced the same issue might be able to assist as well.

- Why is Survival Control Panel a soft requirement -

At the surface level, Survival Control Panel may seem like a mod to allow survival mode feature customization. I can assure you, it is much more than that. Parapets and I built SCP specifically with SunHelm and The Frozen North in mind. Its made as a DLL alternative to the survival spoof, and allows you to toggle specific features that weren't available individually before.

It also allows any armor/clothing mod with Frostfall compatibly to be compatible with either TFN, SunHelm, or Survival Mode's cold systems. Its an extremely useful tool, and the only reason I did not make it a hard requirement is because of my wish to remain VR compatible. So if you are on SE, I highly suggest using it.

- Can I still use TFN or Frostfall with SunHelm 2.0.0?/ I dont want to use the Cold System -

Yes, either select the "Disable Cold needs" option in the installer, or disable cold needs in the MCM menu. With that, you can use whatever hypothermia/cold mod you want to.

- is SunHelm compatible with X mod? -
I usually don't know the answer to this question.

First, try looking under the compatibility section on the modpage. If a mod isnt listed there, or if a mod doesnt have a link on one of the several patch pages, then I likely don't have a meaningful answer for that.
Lots of mods are "compatible" in a sense that they wont break SunHelm. Mods that add food or drink will need a patch or integrated compatibility for SunHelm to read their items as food or drink.

Some hard incompatibilities include other needs mods, and Survival Mode.

-How does the new cold/warmth widget work? What does it mean? -

The new cold widget works very similarly to Survival Mode. I really liked the minimalist art style and functionality of the survival mode cold widget vs vs an invasive array of status bars you may see otherwise. I tried to mimic that with my version of the widget.

The widget will display the Sun symbol when you are warming up from the ambient temperature around you.

When you are warming up near a heat source, the Sun will flash to let you know you are warming up faster.

When you are not getting colder or warmer, the widget will simply not appear, this way you will know nothing is happening.

When you are getting colder, the cold widget will appear.

When you it extremely cold in the area you are in (ie its frigid and you are in potential danger of death) the cold widget will flash from a white color to blue and back.

If you want to use a different cold needs mod with SunHelm:
If you prefer to use TFN or Frostfall with SunHelm's traditional food, thirst, fatigue needs, you can select the no cold needs option in
SunHelm's installer or turn it off in SunHelm's MCM.
Otherwise if you want to use SunHelm's cold needs, you should not be using Frostfall
or TFN, as all 3 do the same thing in different ways.
