MINIONS
1) Be careful. Avoid directly promoting NPCs associated with quests, because some quests tend to delete those NPCs and will make them disappear from the game after some time. Instead of directly promoting said NPCs, you should clone them using one of the four different cloning methods:
- Creating a "Clone" via the Create Undead ritual.
- Casting the "Soul Snare" spell on the NPC while they were alive.
- Studying the NPC after dissecting them and then creating a "Worm Thrall" via the Create Undead ritual.
- Reanimating the NPC, performing the "Soul Bind" ritual and then creating a "Spectral Thrall" via the Create Undead ritual.
Cloned NPCs will not respawn or reset over time as well, so if you plan to use your reanimated thralls as pack mules to store gear then your safest option would be to use Created Undead.
2) Be observant. If you have a reanimated thrall that dies in a one on one fight with an enemy then consider replacing that reanimated thrall with that enemy once you have killed them. If you find yourself in combat with a single enemy that can tank several of your reanimated thralls at once for an extended period of time (or to the point where you actually need to assist them) then consider promoting or cloning said enemy.
3) Be prepared. Always give your minions the strongest weapons and armor that you can find or craft. Enchant their weapons with the absorb health enchantment for better survivability and/or the absorb stamina enchantment for better damage (through more power attacks). Awaken your minions so that they will inherit your stats and will scale with you as you level up. If you had learned the Epigone perk then awaken your minions and teach them new buff, reanimation, summon or healing spells to make them more effective in combat. Use the Memento Mori spell to remotely apply your buff spells to them or the Consecrate Dead spell to remotely give them potions. Craft and feed them potions or bloodstones to help them overcome their weaknesses, especially if they can't wield weapons, wear gear or cast spells.
CONSOLE COMMANDS
If you failed to promote a minion and lost them then reload an older save where you still have them, open console, click on them and take note of its Reference Form ID. Load up your latest save (where they're missing) open console again and type "prid xxxxxxxx" where xxxxxxxx is the Reference Form ID that you just recorded and then type "moveto player" to get them back if they're still alive.
If that fails then they're dead. If you still care about recovering that corpse then type these commands in this order: "prid xxxxxxxx" "resurrect" "moveto player" and then "kill". Keep in mind that this will reset its inventory so you will lose everything that you gave them and they'll spawn in hostile. Alternatively, you can type "player.moveto xxxxxxxx" to teleport to the corpse.
If you only care about reclaiming their items then use these commands in this order: "prid xxxxxxxx" and "openactorcontainer 1".
If you don't care about the minion or the items but would just like to remove the extra reanimation effect from your active effect tab then use the "Catharsis" spell, any other dispel magic spell from another mod or use any of these tricks like getting arrested, transforming into either a vampire lord or werewolf or reading an elder scroll.
