About this mod

Now you can ride a legendary Snow-elf's Frost Mare, made of the purest ice and adorned with the finest ivory, or the bizarre Ice-Carved Steed, a construct animated by rudimentary riekling magic, mimicking the Frost Mares and that will surely give your gameplay a unique tone of surreality.

Frost mares were known as the legendary war mounts of the Snow Elves during the Merethic Era. Equipped with refined ivory armor, these mares appear to be made of the purest, hardest ice, and shrouded in icy wind. That same icy wind forms their manes and tails, and allows them to freeze any enemy that approaches them. Their tremendously strong hooves cause blasts of ice, and their bravery allowed them to face fearlessly even Grahls and Trolls. Snow Elf royalty drove ivory chariots drawn by 2 or more mares into battle, and legends tell that their image charging into the battlefield bordered the divine. Today they are seen as folklore as their masters have no longer ridden them into war since the conflict between the nords and snow elves, now lost in time. The last place you can learn how to summon one as a mount is in Darkfall Cave, next to the snow elf Gelebor's belongings. He will let you take the book and learn the spell.
The origin of Frost Mares is unknown. It's certainly daedric, probably from some cold pocket realm, eventually from where the Frost Atronachs we know originate. Some scholars speculate that they come from the pocket realm The Fourth Sinus of Takubar where the Cold-Flame Atronach originates from, but is unlikely, since Takubar is a realm of cold lava and fire, not ice itself.

Ice-Carved Steeds are curious magical constructions. Goblin-kin have a natural affinity with elves,
and tend to admire and  be subservient to them. High Elves are known to use goblins in combat, and
likewise, Snow elves trained and used rieklings in ancient times. These in turn worshiped them, and
placed them among their primitive pantheon. With the end of the snow elves, the rieklings eventually dispersed, creating their own culture as a patchwork of diverse cultures, some aligning with the Frost
Giants, especially the kingdom of Karstaag, but in general they retained their legends from generation to generation about the "almost divine" snow elves, riding on their horses of pure ice and heading for battle
in their ivory carriages. As scavengers and collectors that they are, they often try to reproduce that
symbolic image by building horse figures on ice, and adorning them with bones, wood, metal, and
whatever else they find. You can even find groups of Rieklings worshiping these figures in some
specific places in Solstheim, and although not particularly well versed in powerful magic, some
magical gifted rieklings exist, though rare today, capable of animating these figures and giving
them life. These are not, however, the Frost Mares they try to recreate, but only figures of
ice and junk, animated by the soul of a mundane creature, usually a horse, that some riekling
wizard has managed to capture. However, they are very rare too, not only because of the scarcity
of riekling wizards, but also because for a long time there have been no more horses in Solstheim,
with the departure of the Empire, that could have their souls captured and transferred to the ice figure.

The meaning of these rituals is highly symbolic and deeply religious to the Rieklings, although today
most of these idols are only inert figures, given the general Rieklings' inability to animate them.
You can however find the spell to summon one of these Ice-Carved Steeds near the chest in Frossel's
cave in Solstheim. In the same place you can find some rieklings worshiping a similar inert idol,
which pulls a carriage, simulating the ancient carriage of the legendary Snow Prince,
the last Snow Elf monarch of Solstheim.

Both work similar to Arvak, can be killed, but can be summoned again as many times as you wish.
They are particularly stronger and braver in combat than normal horses, dealing slightly more
damage, especially elemental ice damage, and being more aggressive in battle. Nevertheless,
both have a slower start sprint than a regular horse, and take longer to slow down and change
direction too. By contrast, their stamina regenerates faster, and has the advantage of having more
HP, which also regenerates, though nowhere near Shadowmere's HP and life regeneration speed.
Ice-carved steeds are slower than a normal horse, but have more stamina and it regenerates faster,
so they run longer, while Frost Mares are faster than a normal horse, and still have the same
advantage of having more stamina, and faster regeneration. Arvak however remains the fastest
horse, and Shadowmere the strongest. I reduced the vanilla's Frost horse stats because its stats are ridiculously modified and make no sense to a normal horse. He is still stronger than a normal
horse, with more hp and stamina, but nothing so special. Shadowmere and Arvak have high stats
for being supernatural creatures, it makes no sense for Frost to be particularly special, now he's
just a little bit special. Ice-carved steeds and frost mares are summoned for 1 minute,
but if you are mounted on them they will not disappear until you dismount.
