He was raised by his older siblings. Almost naturally talented with a blade, he lived the life of an adventurer in his early adulthood but eventually settled down and got married. He honed his skills with a blade but instead of adventuring, he took on the role of mentor, teaching others how to wield a blade. Though one day, when he was returning home, he found his wife dead in a pool of her blood. She had been murdered. Baraael was falsely accused of the crime and rather than to be imprisoned for a crime he did not commit, he exiled himself from Hammerfell.

Rhanvir was a priest of Tu'whacca, often mistaken for a priest of Arkay in more cosmopolitan regions of his homeland, Hammerfell. He fell prey to the temptation of forbidden knowledge as well as the mysteries surrounding life and death which eventually led him to dabble in necromancy. Rhanvir had little choice but to forgo his vows as a priest and venture away from Hammerfell. If he willingly decided to exile himself far from his homeland or was forced into it is still a mystery.
