Warning:  Make sure there are no active effects from shrines or divine amulets on your character when installing, uninstalling or updating this mod.

This is a Requiem addon, so Requim is required!

I always liked the idea behind Painful Regrets but it seemed too harsh since it only increases the theft/murder cap by a smidgen and it also imposes a whole slew of hidden penalties on your character. So the only reason to take the perk would be if you had a character who only committed a few crimes, was not going to not commit any more crimes and wanted to be punished for the rest of the game by all the hidden penalties.  Great roleplaying idea but in practice it was not something I would be excited about taking.  So I rewrote the whole thing to something I found more appealing.

Changes to the Painful Regrets perk:

First, I re-named the perk "Star-Made" after Pelinal Whitestrake and then I removed all of the hidden penalties and finally, I made it so you can get shrine blessing with the perk regardless of how many items you have stolen, how many murders you have committed or whether you are a member of the thieves guild or the DB. You still have to pay off any current bounty (and I left in place a few deity specific restrictions).  Also, I added a couple new deity specific restrictions.  For instance, Arkay doesn't like vampires and necromancers, neither does Dibella (but to a much lesser extent) and Stendarr now tolerates law abiding conjurers but not necromancers.

For the most part, however, you can get your shrine blessings if you have taken the Star-Made perk, no matter what bad acts you have done, as long as you repent by paying off any current bounty.

A few blessings are re-balanced:

This mod also re-balanced a few other blessings, like reducing the Akatosh added blessing by 50% but giving it to the player much earlier (after the graybeards recognize you as Dragonborn), and modestly increased the power of the Dibella and Mara blessings to make them more competitive with some others that were already quite powerful in Requiem.

Gods are more tolerant of petty criminals:

There are also a few minor changes to blessings before you take the new Star-Made perk to make the gods a little more tolerant of thieves and petty criminals.  The items stolen threshold for getting blessings was increased from 10 to 100 and the lifetime bounty threshold was increased from 3,000 to 5,000.  So the gods are now a little more tolerant of petty criminals who are not blessed by the Star-Made perk.  Also, in lore Mara is very merciful, so she will now cure diseases for anyone who has repented by paying off any current bounty regardless of what the character has done or whether the character has the new Star Made perk or not.

Divine Amulets overhauled:

The Divine Amulets have been overhauled to make them more useful if you have pleased the divines.  Each amulet now has at least three effects.  In order to obtain the secondary effect from a divine amulet, you must have the blessing active for that divine active.  In order to obtain the third effect, you also must have pleased that divine in some way.  For example, the Amulet of Arkay provides a primary effect of 25 health points but if you are also blessed by Arkay (have the Arkay blessing in your active effects),  then you also get a restoration casting bonus when wearing the Amulet of Arkey.  And if you have pleased Arkay by killing at least 100 undead and have Arkay's shrine blessing active, then you gain an additional health bonus and are immune to life drain.  The idea is to make the Divine Amulets more useful for those who have pleased the gods and obtained their blessings, without making them overpowered in the early game.

Lore Friendly:

Star-Made strives to be lore friendly.  Pelinal Whitestrake was by all accounts a murderous bastard, yet he served the gods and had the blessing of all nine of them. So, it seems like there should be a way for a Dragonborn to achieve the same level of favor from the gods that Pelinal Whitestrake enjoyed.  Also, in Oblivion, you could get shrine blessings as long as you had no current bounty and your lifetime good deeds (fame) outweighed your lifetime bad deeds (infamy, which could be completely erased rather easily by going on a simple, repeatable pilgrimage).  These were the two main sources of inspiration for Star-Made.

Compatibility and load order:

Load after Requiem and after other mods that alter the shrine blessings.  Note:  Star Made may not be compatible with mods that alter shrine blessings, like Behind the Curtain.  BtC contains a different vision for overhauling of shrine blessings that is not really consistent with the vision I had for this mod.  I would recommend using one or the other but not both together.
