you have to manually install 2 files within matching folders in max --- If your files are set up correctly it will export -- I did my predators mod with it. IF you have errors with anything though in your file when you export - it will fail with next to no error message help..
Dontcha just hate it when you ask a question and only the crickets respond.The installer apparently couldn't find my 3ds 2018 install directory in Windows 10 so it dumped it in c:\ program files\autodesk\3ds max 2018\plugins\ Just copy this 'plugins' directory to the real 3ds 2018 directory and all should be well.
I'm working on an automatic port of Fallout 4 to Unreal Engine 5, with great success. See more details here I am using Max 17 and converting nif to fbx. But about 0.5% meshes failed to convert. I'm wondering if I can pick your brains and/or get the source code to the plug-in. ?Thanks!
The installer sometimes seems not to recognize root installation of 3ds max [if you installed it on disc other than C:\program files]
To fix this issue just browse in program files on drive C in Autodesk folder [C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2016\plugins] and copy files: [HavokEngine.exe and NifPlugin.dlu] and manually paste them in location where you installed Autodesk on your mashine, like in my case on drive D: [D:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2016\plugins] It works on 2015 version as well 2014 of Autodesk.

It works on 2015 version as well 2014 of Autodesk.
