Since the Enderal team completely scrapped the follower system from Skyrim, most follower mods don't work.

Fortunately, EFF (Extensible Follower Framework) by expired6978 is apparently compatible enough to be able to force any NPC to follow the player using its MCM menu. Maybe you are already using such mod and are happy with the results, if so, this guide won't be much useful to you. Or maybe you didn't know it could work in Enderal... well it does, go give it a try! (if you do, be sure to set the interface to "Classic" in MCM. It's the only way to use all of the mod's features when interacting with your followers)
However, it's not perfect. For example, if you make Calia a follower using EFF she won't be able to heal the player anymore. And so, I decided to try something else.

Introducing Recruit Npc spell by eramus. It gives you 5 powers with which you can recruit (duh), open inventory, make wait/relax and dismiss MOST (not all) NPCs. It's lightweight and doesn't break my dear Calia's healing spell. Great! Not so great is the way you use the powers... they are targetable and important NPCs (like Calia and Jespar) are set to be UNTOUCHABLE (aka "ghost") and thus they can't be affected by the mod's powers (or anything at all, really).

One way to remove the "ghost" state is by using the game's potato. Here is how:
  1. Stand in front of the NPC you are not able to affect.
  2. Open the potato by pressing on your keyboard tilde (~) or \... it's the key directly under "Esc" (usually...I hope...)
  3. Click on the NPC. This can be tricky depending on what is on your screen.
  4. Now write: "getisghost" without quotations marks. If the potato returns the value 1, proceed to step 5. If already at 0 and you still can't touch him/her, you have probably met the Shadow . RUN
  5. Enter "setghost 0", no quotation marks, and your NPC can now be punched, stabbed, burned, but most importantly, recruited and buffed! YAY
  6. For good measure, click again on the NPC or twice on something else to deselect it before closing the potato.

Be aware that doing this might break some quests or scripted scenes. I DON'T KNOW.
If having issues, reload a previous save, use "setghost 1" on the npcs affected, dismiss your followers (if using EFF you have to reset in the MCM) and try again.

TL,DR; choose one
  1. Use EFF in "Classic" interface mode and force NPCs to follow you through the MCM menu when you are looking at them.
  2. Use Recruit Npc spell. If the spell for recruiting doesn't connect with the NPC, remove the ghost flag using the potato.

PS. IF THE NPC DRAWS HIS WEAPONS WHEN YOU DO BUT DOES NOT MOVE, IT'S BECAUSE A QUEST OR SCRIPT IS OVERWRITING THEIR BEHAVIOR. SHORT OF EDITING THE QUEST USING THE CREATION KIT, THERE IS NOTHING THAT CAN BE DONE (TO MY KNOWLEDGE AT LEAST. LET ME KNOW!). TOUGH LUCK. RELOAD AND TRY ANOTHER NPC.

THE PLUGIN IN THIS GUIDE
Now, about the file you can download here. It's a simple .esp that removes the ghost flag from Jespar and Calia, assign them a proper class and set their level to be the same as the player so they can actually survive an encounter with a mad rat. (they were both level 1 with 50 health/mana/stamina!!).
But most importantly, it makes it so when waiting for the player before the last mission, they are no longer leaning on the rails in the Sun Temple.
Yes, because if you try to recruit them at that point, with ANY of the options above, they would remain stuck in place and could not move at all from that spot! You will find them doing their usual stuff: Jespar at the tavern and Calia somewhere in the temple or at the cemetery in the Military Barracks.
I'm sure there are points in the game where the same applies, even for others beside Calia or Jespar. Please don't ask me to fix it for you, I rather not butcher all the quests in the game just to make them move! :) and therefore...

THIS PLUGIN IS INTENDED FOR THOSE WITH A SAVE BEFORE THE LAST MISSION!
I have no idea what might happen if Calia or Jespar are not set as ghosts during scripted scenes in the rest of the game!

Plus, making them at the same level as yours could trivialize some missions, you have been warned.

But please, do report your findings!
Oh, one last note... you better NOT trigger the last mission when outside the Sun Temple. It's not pretty. :) Or not, you do you, my work here is done.

HAVE FUN NOT BEING ALONE ANYMORE IN THE VAST CONTINENT OF ENDERAL!

A quick shoutout to rylasasin who ported the ApocalypseSpectraverseDwemer Starlingtech - Magic of the Dwarves Starlings spell packs, and of course to EnaiSiaion for creating them! They are the reason this guide exists!
My mage finally has some new toys to play with, but what to do with all those support spells? I just needed a companion for my adventures, and well, here we are... I figured what I learnt might prove useful to others. I hope it was!
