About this mod

Tired of being the only freckle-face in Skyrim? Here's 10 densely freckled complexion re-textures for you and your favourite NPCs.

WELCOME

Freckles Across Skyrim provides 10 (8 female, 2 male) retextures of two of Skyrim's vanilla complexion files, transforming them from amorphous red rashes into a ton of freckles. Because I have used complexions, and not overlays or dirts, you will be able to apply these textures easily to NPCs as well as your trusty PC.

Please note that you MUST READ the IMPORTANT INSTALLATION INFORMATION IN YELLOW below if you want to choose which NPCs in your game have freckles.  It's a little complex, but immensely rewarding.  However, if you only want to freck-ify your PC and a few random NPCs (who used my retextured complexions by default in vanilla) just download the main file with Nexus Mods Manager (NMM) and start playing!

Freckled PC and random freckled females requires no other mods. Choosing your freckled NPCs require SKSE and Skyrim Creation Kit.

*** If you have any problems getting this mod to work in your game, please leave a comment to tell me what is confusing you or what is causing you problems.  This is my first mod, and I want people to be able to use it easily and feel comfortable asking questions if they can't get it to work. Not long ago, I was downloading my first mod from this site and didn't know what 'SKSE' was, what an '.esp' was, or even where to find my skyrim/data folder. If this is you, I feel your pain and am happy to help! ***

BACKGROUND

I've got a thing for freckles.  So sue me.  Not a few tiny speckles across the nose, but big, dark, dense, gorgeous freckles! I've used tetrodoxin's amazing mod FreckleMania since I first started playing Skyrim, but got tired of being the only properly freckled person in Tamriel.  This seemed to break immersion for me, yet no other mods were able to provide noticable freckles for NPCs.

With Freckles Across Skyrim, noticable freckles will still be relatively rare, as in real life, but are not isolated to your PC. In addition to the NPCs named below, a number of other NPCs who use the retextured files in vanilla will be freckled as well, but I couldn't say who or how many.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

BASIC INSTALLATION (FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT WISH TO CHOOSE WHICH NPCS HAVE FRECKLES)

Install the main file of this mod using Nexus Mods Manager (NMM), or manually install it by extracting the .esp file into skyrim/data and the .dds files into skyrim/data/textures/actors/character/female.

The main file includes only female textures.  If you want the male textures as well, download the main file PLUS the optional male textures file.  These should be downloaded manually and extracted into skyrim/data/textures/actors/character/male

If you wish to use my optional female textures, your best bet is to download them manually. Go to skyrim/data/textures/actors/character/female and replace the main textures with the optional ones of your preference.

You can mix and match optional textures.  If, for example, you wish to use two 'femaleheaddetail_rough.dds' files, simply rename one of them to 'femaleheaddetail_frekles.dds' and copy it to its destination.

FULL INSTALLATION (FOR THOSE WHO DO WANT TO CHOOSE WHICH NPCS HAVE FRECKLES)

With Freckles Across Skyrim, I have chosen to enable freckles for the following NPCs: Aela, Ysolda, Elisif, Sorine, Delphine, Jordis (HousecarlSolitude), Laila, Grelka, Lisette, Lynly, Ria, Sapphire, Silda, Sybille, Vex, Idgrod the Younger, Hroki, Narri, Hert.

Assuming no knowledge of modding (I'm just a noob with a passion!) the whole process should take about 15 minutes of attention from now.  I will provide thorough instructions here, but you may also refer to the .pdf in the 'Docs' folder of the main file download for screenshots if you need more help.

If you already have Skyrim Creation Kit and have set it to allow multiple master files, skip to step 4.  Otherwise, begin with step 1.

1) Download the free Skyrim Creation Kit.  To get it, open your Steam client; under the 'Library' tab at the top, click 'Tools'.  Find 'Skyrim Creation Kit' and download it.  It is a small file and will be ready in a couple of minutes, assuming your internet is OK-ish.

2) While you wait, download the main FrecklesAcrossSkyrim file using the NMM and activate it, or download and install it manually as directed above.

3) Once the Skyrim Creation Kit has finished downloading, search your computer for C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim and open the file called SkyrimEditor.ini with any text editor.  Towards the top, under [General] on a new line write: bAllowMultipleMasterLoads=1 .  Towards the bottom, under [Archive] find sResourceArchiveList2 and at the end of the line write: Dawnguard.bsa .  (Assuming you have all of the Skyrim DLCs, go ahead and write: Hearthfire.bsa, Dragonborn.bsa as well - this will allow you to freck-ify NPCs from any DLC later on if you wish.)  Save SkyrimEditor.ini and close it.

4) Now open the Skyrim Creation Kit.  On the top left, click 'File', then 'Data'.  In the popup window, scroll down to find FrecklesAcrossSkyrim.esp . Click to tick the box beside it, then highlight it and click 'Set as Active File'.  Click 'OK'.  Leave Skyrim Creation Kit alone for a couple of minutes while it unpacks the files, and click 'Yes to All' on any warning messages that pop up.  If the Skyrim Creation Kit crashes to desktop at this point, you may haven't completed step 3 correctly.  Refer to my .pdf tutorial for screenshots of how your SkyrimEditor.ini should look.

5)  Once you can see the 'Done' message at the bottom of the main window (be super patient, don't interrupt it while it's loading!) find the 'Object Window' to the left and double click 'Actors', then 'Actor' right below.  This will bring up a list of all the NPCs in Skyrim in the 'Object Window'.  From here, FrecklesAcrossSkyrim will enable you to easily freck-ify the NPCs named above.

6) Type an NPCs name into the 'Filter' box on the upper left of the 'Object Window', Elisif for example, then highlight her name on the right and press the F4 key (CTRL + F4 on some keyboards).  This will bring up a confirmation dialogue box; click 'Yes', then click 'Done' when the next dialogue box appears.  Elisif will now have freckles in your game.  Repeat step 6 for any/all of the above named NPCs you would like to freck-ify.

7) When you are done, click 'File' and 'Save' in the main window.  Close the Skyrim Creation Kit.  Play Skyrim in an immersively freckled environment!

The good news: once you have successfully freckled the NPCs of your choice using my main file, you DO NOT have to repeat the process above to switch between optional textures!
Even more good news: If you've come this far, you are now able to freck-ify any NPC in Skyrim, even those who I have not named. Please refer to the downloadable .pdf, where I provide additional help if you wish to do so.

APOLOGIES

I hope the above instructions weren't too foreboding; I feel like they kind of were.  This is my first mod, so if you know a more user-friendly way to modify the facegen data of a batch of NPCs, please let me know and I will try to impliment it ASAP.

Thanks very much for downloading.

UNINSTALLATION

If you installed using NMM:

Deactivate FrecklesAcrossSkyrim and remove it from NMM.  Then check skyrim/data/textures/actors/character/female for 'femaleheaddetail_frekles' and 'femaleheaddetail_rough'.  If either of these files are present, delete them.

If you installed the male files, also check skyrim/data/textures/actors/character/male for 'maleheaddetail_rough01' and 'maleheaddetail_rough02'.  If either of these files are present, delete them.

If you installed manually:

Go to skyrim/data, find FrecklesAcrossSkyrim.esp and delete it.
