About this mod

Your time has come. Your sight blurs and fades. Your eyes close. Fewer and fewer sounds seem to reach you. Silence. Darkness. No longer part of Nirn.

Pran Ul

Simple mod that seeks to improve the dying experience when using first person mods. It makes the vision blur and fade to black, and gradually mutes the audio. If dying due to a powerful attack, eyes and ears fail instantaneously. In any case, at the end you are left to reflect about your defeat for a few second in total darkness before the game automatically reloads.

The mod is meant to be used alongside mods that force first camera when dying, such as Enhanced Camera, Immersive First Person View, The Joy of Perspective, and so on. There is a version of the mod that always fades to black instantaneously, so that version may suit people who play without such mods. However, there is a chance of having very small yet perceptible script lag, which means you can see yourself in third person for an instant before everything fades to black.

I also recommend mods that make you go ragdoll when dying—normally your characters performs a a death animation. Mods that prevent killmoves to the player might also improve the experience. In the regular version, killmoves are followed by gradual sensory loss.

Lastly, there are mods that make the reload screens blank, which help make the dying/"respawning" experience more seamless.

Known Incompatibilities

Some ENBs: This mod uses imagespace modifiers. Many ENBs don't play well with imagespace modifiers. As a general rule, if night-eye without doesn't work with your ENB preset without requiring "Enhanced Night Eye for ENB's fix." Another telltale sign is if your game doesn't fade when you use a carriage. Some ENBs that make use of newer code by JawZ work correctly with imagespace modifiers. Some popular ENBs that work correctly with imagespace modifers include Serenity, Tranquility, and Skylight. I will try to compile a list of popular ENBs that work fine, but, if in doubt, you can quickly check yourself by installing Praan Ul with your mod manager, starting the game, running the command "kill player" on the console, and see what happens.

Mods that trigger when your HP reaches zero, such as Death Alternative or No Death Mod, may interact with Praan Ul poorly. It doesn't seem the player is able to die when using those mods anyways, so I guess it should be no problem.

Script Issues

Any one who has experience modding Skyrim knows that scripts linger in savegames even after uninstalling a mod. Praan Ul doesn't currently have a "safe uninstall" feature. As always when installing new mods that have scripts, keep a backup. If you have run into this problem, it should be possible to fix by removing the invisible dummy quest that this mod adds. I'll write a mini-guide explaining the process soon.

Also, if you try both versions of the mod, when you try the second version make sure you don't do so in the same savegame in which you tried the first version. The script from the first version you try will be the one in effect, for the reason previously explained.

Future Work

I started working in this mod about four months ago, but rarely put any time into it. After more than two months without working on it at all, I decided to quickly tidy it up and release it. I was originally planning have an MCM so that people could fine-tune the experience. After having released the mod, I feel more motivated, so I'll probably improve it even if it takes me a while. Bug fixes, if any, will be quick though.

Version 1.0: Initial Release

Version 1.X: Bug fixes. Perhaps simple requests. I do plan to support the mod.

Version 1.5: I might rewrite the script so that I can make the dark screen after losing senses last the same when both losing the senses instantaneously and gradually. I originally had the script written with an implementation that would allow for this, so I know how to do it. This is why this update has a moderate chance of happening.

Version 2.0: Unlikely version in which I add an MCM, allowing me to merge both versions of the mod into a single customizable version. More features, including safe uninstall and customization of visual effects (blood, tunnel vision...) will also be added.

Permissions

As displayed, everyone is free to do whatever they please with their files. I'd appreciate been sent a message showing me mods that made use of the scripts, but this is not required. You do not need to credit me.
