Hey,just to let you know, the 1k retexture upload does not contain the steam centurion retextures, since you accidentaly put the dwarwen sphere texture in both the dwarwen sphere and steam centurion folders. The 2k version is correct though,so just to let you know
I used Bethesdas 1K texture and upscaled it to 4K so that I could repaint it in order to bring out detail. At the request of SRWO I made this uncompressed file available to him for his mod Ancient Dwemer Metal. You too can use this as a clean base for your own retexture if desired. Please leave a POSITIVE comment on SRWOs mod page if you appreciate his retexture.
Just wanted to say this mod is excellent work. I've installed texture mods of all kinds but it always bothered me when I saw the poorly textured dwarven ballista and centurion on the loading screens, not to mention whenever I got up close and personal in the ruins. You certainly deserve a lot more recognition for this.
I enjoy challenging projects that take some time and thought to do. I probably don't get much recognition for my mods due to the lack of cleavage. Oh well...
"I probably don't get much recognition for my mods due to the lack of cleavage" You sir deserve a metal for that quot. Anyways, endorsed very awesome mod!
Wow! Not bad, very not bad. I saw various attempts retexture these objects. They were not very successful. I tried myself. But I had the impression that it is too difficult and long. I look at your texture, compare with the original, and can not understand - what methods did you use? I think the original texture of the base + some know-how, but the result was better than expected.
Your impression that it's difficult and long is correct. I used Bethesda's HD texture upscaled to 4k as a base and then repainted it. No overlays or filter effects are used. Most of the work was done with the blending brush to smear out the offending texture. This approach was best to keep the color as close to original as possible. It wasn't hard to do, but very time consuming. Now that I think about it, I did use dwemetaltiles03.dds as a final overlay on the 2K textures. Smoothing out areas of the environment masking helped with some of the blotchiness. The vanilla normal's were very degraded so I made my own and then merged them with Bethesda's. If you want more detail into my process, then let me know. I'm happy that you like my work.
I use Gimp, but Photoshop will work for this as well. As I stated before, I upscale the image and then blend out the bad texture. In Gimp the tool is called the smudge brush. It's different from the blur tool in that you can push the pixels around much like oil painting on canvas. Great care has to be taken to not smudge out the fine detail you want to keep. Initially the effect will look streaky, however with a little practice I'm sure you'll get a feel for it. I set my smudge tool at 50%, transparency at 75%, and apply jitter. The work I did on the normal map was a lot more complicated and I haven't nailed down a technique that I'm really happy with yet.
Thanks for the explanation. I'll try something similar on other textures. Waiting for the continuation of your work - Ballista, Forgemaster and maybe something else.
