When I try and load the data of any of the DLC's in CK as well as the Skyrim one, even without a single plugin selected, it crashes. It successfully launches when only the Skyrim is selected, but if I include a single dlc, it crashes. Even exclusively one of the DLCs. Should also note when I do it using only Skyrim, there are no errors, only a single warning (Error being a dialog box with an ignore option, warning being the one with "Yes to all") My greyface is more than a corrupted save as it persisted in a brand new game even on the character creation screen, and I'm trying to resolve it but the CK is making it a f***ing ass, anyone got tips or a fix for CK crashing short of uninstall -> reinstall? This is a brand new install of it and all I did so far was follow the INI modification instructions to the letter, at least as far as I am aware. Is this a "I f***ed up" or a "How is that f***ed up"?

I also feel like maybe stating that only the player character gets the grey face, at least that I've seen, could be important.

Have you ever heard of the Enter key? (It's above the right shift key and below the backward slash key. I put this information in parentheses because you clearly love parentheses and love puting unnecessary information in parentheses, fucking LOVE these parentheses)

So..., i am a Mod Organizer user. That is most likely the reason my export took so long. All mod files are included in every mod unless I hide them in Mod Organizer. The overwrites ( and subsequent file exclusions...) do not happen until the virtual files system is built each time you start the game or each time you open a tool that needs to see/use the files system. So this means the CK ends up seeing a lot more then it normally would with say Nexus Mod Manager, WryeBash or from installing mods manually ( causing overwrites thus leaving fewer files for the CK to look through.). I am of course guessing but it would surprise me if I was not at least half right.

Edit: Do not use this method with Mod Organizer unless you really know what you are doing. Watching the "reads" and "writes" to files from within window's resource monitor allowed me to watch the file names being accessed during the export and I was surprised at what I witnessed. I loaded Skyrim.esm and all DLC's and one NPC altering mod into the CK for export and the CK Read from and wrote to every active mod in my game load order regardless of what I had loaded in the CK for export. I am not sure how this will end up as it obviously will take another 30 hours to complete. Again, I saw great things happening with textures initially but new problems popped up with each successive "fix" attempt. I have the game saved in a zip for fast re-load if necessary. Be careful using the CK with Mod Organizer.

Wow...uh..Help, kind of...maybe. I down loaded this last night. I had trouble with Mod Organizer and the CK (forgot I did a re-install and had not set up the CK again, and how...). Fixed. Hooked up the skyrimeditor.ini again. Fired up the CK and chose anything that added/changed NPC's ( a good percentage of my 243 active mods deal with NPC's somehow.). Predicted "butt load of NPC's" appeared. Face tints were change-able and visible. Export begun,...12 hours ago. 12 hours. There is reading and writing of various files going on while CK reports "Not Responding". It is still doing it's thing but,...12 hours+? Just alot of stuff and I should be unconcerned(?) or I should have hit "Ctrl/Alt/Del 6 hours ago? (I mean...WOW...!).

    Edit: 18 hours now.

Edit: 20 hours...being patient...I am worried what will happen if i stop it now. I still see disk activity in the game/mod files.

Edit: Okay: Background...I-7 6700K. 16 Gbs. DDR4, 1 Tb SSD. Windows 7 pro x64. 200+ oldrim mods approx. 20 mods affect NPC's in some way. Export going on 23 hours now. Began with mostly reading and some writing, currently it is mostly writing to Mod organizer Overwrite file. I am leaving it to go even though windows reports the creation kit as "Not Responding" there is obvious file activity in the indicated mod files. I am not sure what the effect of stopping the processes would be...Oh well. (I was informed that stopping wont hurt much but I am letting it try to finish.).

Edit: It eventually finished after 30 hours +/-. I fell asleep around the 30 hour mark and it was done when I woke up.
This method did not fix all problems and I have several mods that add NPC's. I checked one, vanilla female before exporting and did not see if tints were visible for all added. One of the mods evidently did not have tints because i now have a few NPC's running around with red foreheads. Although not all issues were fixed and a few issues popped up after doing this I would say that overall the appearance of NPC's is much improved in my current play through because of this method. Now by identifying the problem individuals I can go after fixing them. I wonder how many issues would have been fixed on a new game versus an old save. Thank you.

Already hit you up on messenger, but if you're getting red forehead issues then try moving your facetint folder out and try exporting one npc who is having the issue, and put the facetint folder back in to see if this fixes the issue. Red foreheads are one of two things, either a texture file is too large for the ck to render properly, which causes it to be either invisible or give your npcs the red forehead of power, or it's an esp change. One example, is cbbe's dirt to beauty marks. You can possibly fix it if it's an esp change by also loading the esp, but it's not a guaranteed fix.

Yes nojanath, You have been a lot of help. I want others to be aware that the bulk export can take a LOOOOOOOONG time depending entirely on the plugins you have loaded. Also that it makes a big difference when it works correctly. Added NPC's (mods that add them) should be looked at individually. Check a representative of each mod to increase your chances of success. I still have a few issues with my play through because of the mods I am using and inexperience. But it keeps getting better. I know there are still people playing this game and there are new people buying it at reduced price right now. I still have fun with it entirely because of people like nojanath who suggest, advise, lead and shout from the mountain tops! Thank you all. Thank you again for your help nojanath.
Edit: besides, I do not see all the mods I want to use ready for Special Edition yet and I am learning! Yay!

Thanks for this guide! I've been trying to do some (very minor*) edits to the Sofia Follower mod, but she was constantly getting grey-face and none of the "fixes" I could find worked. Ctrl+F4 wasn't doing anything. Following your guide, I got it to work by moving the facetints folder out and then back in... a really simple solution, but nobody else online seemed to be mentioning it. I really appreciate the help!

*For anyone who cares, for roleplay reasons I was just trying to change Sofia's eyes and give her Dremora horns. I didn't change a thing besides her eyes, adding an extra part to her hair part, and adding some spells. I'm playing a D& Tiefling-inspired "half-Dremora" character and I just wanted to make Sofia have similar heritage.

Ya, that's part of the reason I threw this up in the first place. Due to the nature of the mod I was working on, I noticed these issues popping up a lot because of how many exports I had to make. It took me a while to figure out a solid solution to them, and when I figured it out I was like....other people would probably like to know.

It *should* work with custom races, but I admit to not testing it

Thank you for sharing this with us non-modders as well.
I installed the CreationKit specifically for this Grey problem & your solution.
Of course, I had to temporarily move the tintmasks folder. Didn't know WHEN to put it back, so I did that right before the BigAss export, which lasted about 35 minutes. If not the correct put-back time, then please advise. It seems to have worked, though. Will do some more testing tonight. My own character is not feeling grey anymore!

    ~Edit~
Unfortunately, all the NPC's still have a polished Aluminium look.
Only my main character is back to normal.
    [Throwing a tantrum]
I'm going to wipe everything & install Skyrim from scratch.
This time 1 update/mod at a time . . . need to find the culprit.

So, a little late lol, but you want to put your tintmasks in AFTER the biggass export. What's happening is that the ck can't render your tintmasks, because they're probably high res.

Does this guide apply to Skyrim SE ?

I encountered this problem on several of my NPC's and I would like to be sure I won't break anything if I follow your guide on Skyrim SE CK.

I'm using MO 2 for what its worth, I don't know if it changes anything for your instructions.

To be honest, I couldn't tell you. It would depend on if they messed with the CK too much, or the file structure. The lack of skse 64 has stopped me from really doing much with the special edition. I'd say go for it. if it doesn't fix the issue, then just go to where your export files are (if I remember right it's in the guide) and delete the export in question. If you already have exports there, just sort files by date and delete the newest one.

Ya, I custom built my computer back when a had a ton of disposable income that I probably should have saved. I haven't done the full run on another ram set or processor so my run is likely a lot faster than most.
