An indev version is available under optional downloads, it is stable and is safe to install over existing installs without issue, just allow it to overwrite. It includes the first 12 variants created by TheVari and myself, and incorporates the script fix created by Dajay42, with permission.
1. The changes by the mod are most of the time very subtle, but you will definitely see vibrantly colored dragons occasionally. Otherwise expect subtle differences.
2. Bug reports go in the bug forum!
3. Questions go in the question forum! Please ensure that your question hasn't been answered in the top level post before you post a question!
4. Patch pack requests go in the requests forum! Please do follow the form setup, it makes it a lot easier for me in the end!
5. While it is a beta I haven't noticed any bugs and I have a heavily modded install. I do expect bugs and incompatibilities, but I also expect them to be minimal. I hope you all enjoy!
Hey, you mentioned how this requires packs to work with newly added dragons, but what about bellyache's dragon RETEXTURE? Not the new species, but the reskins? And reskins in general? And I'm guessing the official 2k texture pack dlc is compatible, right?
It should work with any texture packs out there just install this one after as it requires the modified nif files to work properly. If you find one that it prevents the application of the textures from the replacer by doing so, let me know in the bug reports forum and I'll get a compat patch out ASAP, probably the same day. I hope that answers your question
For now it may be incompatible with Bellyache's retex if the reworked nif files from that point to a different diffuse texture in a different folder. The nifs in my files are needed to ensure that the mod actually shows up. Knowing that though, I can get a patch done. I have been waiting to see which retextures I will have to make patches, and now the number is two. For now you can either allow the overwrite and wait (a day or two) for a patch that you will be able to overwrite with again to correct the incompatibility. Or, you can simply wait for the patch. It is your call.
Did some testing with Bellyache's. The only file DE wants to overwrite from Bellyache's is 'bossdragon.nif' same with Realistic Texture Overhaul Dragons. I haven't used Bellyache's in over a year and compared the difference in game between Bellyache's and Official Highres. I can't say for certain of course but Bellyache's seems to be working properly with DE. I was able to get varied Blood Dragons. The dragons look less detailed with the Official Highres with variations. Using Mod Organizer was helpful in this testing process. Someone else may want to test this out as I don't want to give any false information.
From everything I understand and from a few friends that have used them together, you are correct. I won't call it compatible though until I hear more confirmations. Thank you though for the information!
Is this compatible with Colorful Dragons 2 By Luddemann or Colorful Dragons 3 HD also by Luddemann? I really like that mod's colors and used in game they are quite striking, especially if using No Dragon LOD since both of these files contain LOD for the dragons.
Does The Dragon Engine use LOD for the dragons or are those two compatible with TDE?
I converted the mod to SSE (pre-indev version) and it was working fine. Now it's causing me issues all of a sudden though, unsure why. The game slows down and grinds to a halt. Tracked it down to the file DragonEngine.xml (could be something that loads said file too, of course). I'll post updates if I find why this is happening. Edit: I think I have to give up. I reset my inis, deactivated all mods that wouldn't make my save go corrupt, then made a save and cleaned it with fallrimtools... it still happens. The only mods I have active now, including manual ones, are SKSE, Address Library, JContainers, SkyUI, RaceMenu, iEquip... and this mod. I doubt it's the xml, I can spawn in all the various dragons just fine. The save I'm having this issue on is a Skyrim Together save, maybe it's baked something into the save that causes this mod to break. I hope it's only broken on that save and not my singleplayer one.
Sorry that I can't exactly offer any help, but how exactly did you convert the mod? I followed all the normal steps to converting a mod but it doesn't seem to work in-game
Sadly, it seems development has been abandoned. This is a great mod and I'm happy I was able to use it with Skyrim LE, but I don't think it'll be ported to SE.
For anyone who's curious, it is able to be manually ported to SE. However, you will have to go to the textures\actors\dragon folder and fix the resolution on most of the files in the folder. They need to be 2048x4096, but they're 2048x4097 and SE pitches a fit if the textures aren't divisible by 4. So just make the image smaller by one pixel on the right with like Paint.net or something and then run the meshes through your optimizer of choice. You definitely still need Racemenu SE.
Hands down the very BEST dragon mod on the Nexus. This is really fun to use especially if you use a mod that changes the spawn rate of the dragons. You get to see a bunch of neat and very colorful tint masks applied to your favorite dragon retextures. An experience not to be missed.
I've been gone for a while now, just wanted to ask. Is this mod still alive? are you gonna keep updating it? i was hoping to see the dragon name generator and all that.
This mod really hasn't been in active development for a while now, it doesn't mean I won't revisit it, but I currently have an overhaul for FO4 that I need to finish the first phase of.
Question inside the DragonEngineFinderQuestScript.psc What are 0,1,2,3,4 where you labeled reds browns oranges, and whatnot for? like huesLower[3] whats the 3 for?
Heya, been a fan of this mod for a while now (cant have a single install of Skyrim without it ^_^) and I was wondering if its possible to use the same method to create variants of other creatures like the trolls or draugr or something? Not sure how performance heavy it would be to do it to a bunch (or all) of the creatures and monsters in the game. Anywho, just an idea i had! Thanks for the awesome mod!
I've just tested it a few minutes ago, and unless I'm under influence of the observer-expectancy fallacy, choosing and spawning the same Splendor dragon variant over and over again resulted in Splendor dragons pimped by The Dragon Engine's tintmasks.
Edit: After further testing, not eery Splendor variant has tintmask info available, sadly. But I'll still run these mods together cuz... Why not?

Heya buddies! Pals! SUBJUGATED MOD USERS... I... erm... I mean... loyal fans! >.> Yeah... that one!
Anyway.... I HAD NO IDEA THIS WAS EVEN SEMI COMPATIBLE WITH THAT MOD! But.... I popped over there and left a comment on revenant's comment thread where he was conversing with opusGlass. So.... you never know, something interesting could come from that.
I hate to say it, and I know opusGlass was bummed as well, but due to the way the two mods must work, a compatibility patch is pretty much out of the question at the moment. The amount of work needed would likely surpass the work on either mod individually. That said, I'm open to working with him in the future towards some awesome things if it's doable.

I only ask again, as will we not therefore have some textures HD some low res ?
